I smelled something I’ve never smelled before, and it was wonderful…

Pruning the apple tree, I carried the clippings to a bin, and got a close smell of them. It was apples. It was the way good apples smell compounded with the smell of new leaves. If I could have gotten that scent into a bottle, I would’ve. I now vow the yard will never be [...]

things you do that you just know most copyeditors are going to screw up…

The line: from Algini: “—we shall track it, and we will act.”

I’ll almost lay you money a copyeditor is going to come to a screeching halt and try to draw both statements into uniformity. Which will remove a layer of meaning. And which I shall have to stet. So, I think I WILL insert [...]

life gets in the way…and sometimes you have to do 52 card pickup…

When that happens, re writing, it’s useful to start over. Not completely over; but to do what writers call a ‘rolling rewrite’, going back to the start the book and editing forward in rapid motion.

So the page count has started over, and will follow the re-write.

Don’t panic: this is ordinary.

Refrigerator died….(solemn music)…which is a bad thing when you’re on Atkins.

We’re cooking everything we can. We have a tiny freezer and two ice-chests, so we’re putting things there.

For our fridge think not of a fridge with a six-pack of beer and a half packet of weiners. Nay! A) I’m a food-hoarder when it comes to ice boxes. I stuff the thing with everything [...]

making progress on the book…

It takes me a while to recover my stride after a diversion. Thank goodness for outlines. We were, for one thing, diverted by a spate of really cool weather, making it foolish to wait to do certain outdoor jobs which would have to be done in potential 100 degree weather, when we had a run [...]

re the graph: it’s one of those erase/write periods..

I write and I erase the outline. We’re in a transitional scene, which is pretty well crossing maps, so there’s about as much put in as taken out, so that’s why the graph doesn’t advance appreciably. We are now into the main action of the book.

Todd Lockwood is doing the cover for the next [...]

Well, what did we do today?

Jane got out and ran the Mantis. I stayed in and wrote. Then we headed for the rink. I felt way much better than I have…3-turn is effortless again and I’m not having the dizziness issues. Then we got the notion how to cut those pesky bridge supports that have been hanging fire for a [...]

The next Bren book (the just-finished manuscript) now has a title…

Betrayer. Betsy Wollheim thought that up. It so works.

No, I haven’t got a date yet, but I will mail the book in next week.

You’ll note that the one after that, Intruder, now has a progress bar. —–>

Incinerated a pot of stew this morning

Which proves the Bren book is moving nicely.

I thought I’d put it on and just sit down and trim up a few details in the scene…

It would have been a nice pot of stew. A total loss. Fortunately I got to it before the pot was ruined, but nothing else. I think it’s [...]

Check it out! It works! It works!

Awright! I refuse, absolutely refuse to admit what I forgot to do. Too many irons in the fire is my only excuse and even I’m not buying that. But the download should now work! If it doesn’t…wait ten minutes before telling me. I wanna go take a shower! —>J

THE BUTTON ISN”T WORKING YET: WE [...]
