TYPO: Closed Circle has a policy of creating a new file for all purchasers when there is a “significant” typo, and there was, in Deliberations. I have e-mailed all of you who purchased Deliberations before the fix, giving you a link to request a new (correct) download. Because it has 8 or so people in each addy and because it contains a link, certain spam blockers may prevent your getting that e-mail. IF YOU BOUGHT DELIBERATIONS, check your spam filter. You should be getting a letter from me any minute now. I personally apologize. Now and again we glitch. But we try to fix it fast. I fixed a few other things just because I could, but the significant one is Tabini’s age when his father died: he was 14.
ANNNNNNNNNNNND our software screwed up bigtime and didn’t give anybody any links. WRITE to me (cj@cherryh.com) and I will get you a new link, personally. It is no trouble. A writer wants the file to be ACCURATE. Sigh. And we have worked on this one file from 9Am until now, at 6PM, to try to get this thing right. It takes that long to produce files—and now the demned re-download program spits out gibberish.
For me to give you that re-download personally is two buttonpushes if you will email me that you are ready to receive it.
IF YOUR ORIGINAL LINK IS LESS THAN 48 hours old you can re-use it to trigger a new download, which should now be correct! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Thank you for fixing the typo so quickly. I noticed that the ages didn’t seem to add up but I figured it was either a typo or I was reading something wrong. I just figured I’d figure it out on the reread. The download link worked but I accidentally downloaded the book about 3 times before I noticed.
I’ve been lurking for months and looking for an excuse to post. C.J. has been my favorite author for about 30 years and I almost hate to admit that I felt like a little kid when I got an e-mail from her, even if it was sort of a form letter.
Thanks again for the short story. I really enjoyed it. I hope you make enough money on it to make it worthwhile to write a new one every once in a while. It would be cool to see a short story about Tano as a child or Tully back home on earth or any other odds and end story that you never ended up putting in one of your books.
I’d also like to thank Jane for the free book. I’ve been planning to buy one of her books and this gives me a chance to see if I might like them. Also, a belated happy birthday.
Technology is wonky at times, sometimes you have to show it who’s in charge.
COmputer prankster Wesley is involved in these files—we have begun to believe anything can happen.
Ummm .. while we’re talking about links, could you please compress the link I had to click to download? It was about 3 lines long. It’s not critical, just something to put on your list of “enhancements”. 🙂
I wish we knew how: the store generates monster links and that’s not a software we know how to tinker with.
The Wesser is absolutely involved!
Despite him, I downloaded the new version of “Deliberations” without a bit of trouble, as far as I know, not having gotten into either version yet. I was going to begin my reading binge with “Deliberations” but then “Yvgenie” worked its dark Russian magic and I opened it instead. It’s wonderful. I am gobbling it up. “Deliberations” is next, and then I will settle into the two Netwalkers. So much great reading ahead!
I should be able to just redownload Deliberations and cover up then – that’s good. love Jane’s cover illustration, it’s beautiful and so Atevi.
looking forward to reading the Networkers omnibus while I’m away (Spain, a month)
I’m sorry, I’m not a fantasy fan … so Yvgenie is not for me … but I make up for it by having audio, ebook, and print copies of everything sci-fi from you both as it becomes available ..
Downloaded Deliberations to Nook Tablet wirelessly. Used link in email. Must attach to computer to move file to My files/books. Can open and read file. No problem.
Watch for the chevrons in bottom left of screen where it shows downloads have arrived.
Nook Tablet uses an Android operating system. Just information. Normally, I just drag and drop files from the PC.
Got it with four hour to spare! Must be the new file because it’s shorter.
Much as I love the linguistic aspects of Foreigner, I’m afraid I let Jane’s tale of interstellar networking beguile this old retired programmer. I’m four-plus chapters in, and very annoyed that it is so good that I would like to ignore all my other obligations and just sink in to it. I want to shut out the rest of the world, but I must shave and go out for the day.
Sorry if that sounds backhanded; you can tell I’m conflicted today 🙂
lol—good for you. We provided something for everybody.
How do I get stuff into the basket?
Mmm. On Closed Circle? Click the e-book tab as you come to the site, scan down the catalog until you find the book or story you want, and you click on the ADD TO CART button under the cover-picture. The item pops into the cart. You go to your cart and check out.
No ‘Add to Cart’ button. Everything else, yes. That’s what my problem is: I expected to see one.
In either FF or IE. (Having multiple browsers can be fun.)
Stay with me on this: I need to figure what’s happening. I use both FF and IE and see them fine. THis is bizarre. You are on the http://www.closed-circle site: you have gone to the purple ‘ebook catalog’ tab next to ‘home.’ You have up the page titled EBOOKS and scrolling down the center column to all the book cover pictures: under each is a live ‘free sample’ link in purple, the price, a white blank, and under that is a dark little box [which is a link] saying ‘Add To Cart’ in yellow letters, on each individual book.
I think we may have it! I consulted Jane, and you need to have ‘Noscripts’ DISabled and ‘Java’ ENabled in order to use the buttons. That might well be the problem. You can toggle these two programs on and off.
You are (also) not by chance on a beta of Win 8? There is an update to OUR site software we hesitated to put in until we had the books loaded in, and Jane says she is going to do that this afternoon, after she has her brain in gear…so that might also fix some issues.
In my experience with Closed-Circle, you don’t have to turn No-Script off…you just have to allow the CC website to do its various things, which you can do either temporarily or permanently with a right-click anywhere on the display or through the blue-serpent “S” button.
Java is enabled (that’s my usual). Can’t find ‘Nosxcripts’ in the add-ons, so I don’t think it’s running.
Still not little add to cart buttons. Is it a windows version-specific thing?
PJ, are you win7?
We’re pursuing several things with this, at our end. I don’t doubt at all you’re giving us good info—we’re trying to find a fix. We’re some upgrades behind, and maybe that will miraculously pop them up.
I really like being able to generate a download of the books I’ve bought. I lost everything in an oS re-install and was glad to be able to re-download again. As for the typo, I’m glad that’s been sorted, because my brain was doing a teensy little itching and tickling, and I couldn’t find out what was wrong. 🙂
CJ, I have a question that didn’t arise until I was corresponding with another member of the group. The background colors used for the comments boxes alternate from a light blue to lavender to green while the type remains black. The green is the easiest on the eyes, with the lavender coming in second. The blue, otoh, makes the type seem to vibrate, and it appears to have green shadows behind the letters. The other member of the group asked how we could change the colors, and the only way I knew of was to do a change in the browser’s setup not accepting the website’s colors. But that’s a shotgun approach to the problem, because every web page that’s called up is now just two colors and all of the pretty stuff becomes drab. I know with all of the other stuff you have going on, it’s another thing to look at, but it is hard to read on that blue background. I don’t know if there’s a way to have the font automatically reset to a color that has a better contrast to its background, but if you have a chance, could you look into that?
Is there any of those colors that gives you fits, Joe?
The light gray is a bit hard on my eyes, but seriously, let me ask the other person, because it’s because of them that I asked you about the colors. I can live with the gray, the other colors are fine.
I’ve been trying to buy the new short story, but no luck. I got it into the cart, but PayPal tries to force me to open an account, and that isn’t going to happen. Sorry.
It won’t do that if you persist, as I understand, without giving Paypal any account info. Eventually it gives up and lets you just use a credit card. OTOH, if you want to just send a check to us via our PO Box (contact us ^ above) and do a ‘manual order,’ there is that option, too.
The multi-line link for .mobi worked just fine. Thank you, CJ.
WinXP, IE8, FF16.x. I don’t have a problem with other e-commerce sites (I buy a lot of stuff that way, where it’s not available locally).
I can, actually see it in the source code:
<input type="image" src="http://www.closed-circle.net/wp-content/gallery/banners/addtocart.png" class="eStore_button eStore_add_to_cart_button" alt="Add to Cart" /
And I'm wondering if type="hidden" is maybe doing something.
I finally got a chance to go shopping – and I just finished Deliberations. It is terrific! and Jane’s cover is so beautiful, evocative and so appropriate. No work today because of Sandy so I am having a lazy morning, and after my shower I’m going to start Jane’s book. A great way to survive the hurricane 🙂
