My flight and room at the Hampton is booked! I got a 2-Queen bed room anticipating someone might want to be roomies. Female, non-smoker and a morning person. Yeah, I’m an anomaly.

  2. joekc6nlx

Okay, my post keeps getting buried….

Name tags. Yes? No? I still have the templates from last year.

    Joe

Charlie, I recommend making a reservation at your hotel. Lock in a good rate now. You can always cancel if it doesn’t work out but reservations and staying at desirable hotels will become more difficult the closer it comes to WorldCon. We’d love to meet you.

Joe, yes name tags are a definite yes, we’ll have to figure out if we want the plastic sleeves for the name tags or use the laminator that I have. Let me know…

82Eri Great! I hope you can convince Claudia that we need her and her “hot” chocolate with the chili powder for poolside hijinks.

    • joekc6nlx

I still have plenty of the sleeves….at least, I think I do. I’ll re-use mine..but if you prefer the laminator, we can use that, too….

Now the question becomes: what activities are we absolutely going to schedule, and what do we want to try to do as additions?
We know we want a space pirate BBQ, and I know we want to spend time just chatting with CJ and Jane. With no local guide making reservations for stuff like the Little Spokane canoe trip, that is probably a bridge too far.
Do we want to try to make reservations for the group for a luncheon or dinner at the falls, or try for a cruise on Lake Coeur d’Alene, or do we want to be much more laid back?
Warrior of Worry, Joekc6nlx, and I will do everything in our power to make this an enjoyable time and relieve as much pressure and stress from CJ and Jane as possible, but we don’t want to just sit around and do nothing.
We enjoyed the Latah Creek winery and Dry Fly distillery tours last year, and also the view from Arbor Crest, but for the non-drinkers we need to have some equal time. Do we want to go back to the Large Cat sanctuary and see the lions and tigers and a bear? Do we want to try to add a green sauce pizza party? Should we try a tea party in a tea room in town, or finally make it to the Looff carousel? We have much more flexibility for this event than a regular con, so state your wishes. The worst that can happen is that we can’t actually make it happen or run out of time.
The next question: does anyone have a suggestion for hostess gifts? CJ and Jane are being so gracious to us, we really need to get something for them again, but I expended my ideas last year, and I’m struggling here… Of course the more expensive the hostess gift the more we will ask people to contribute. Of course if anyone wants to attempt making a book such as Kato-nadi did for SheiCon III raise your hand and we’ll contribute original poetry, etc.
It would also be nice if we could come up with some original artwork and a theme. Last year was bajio kabiso (reversing the odds) due to the infelicity of it being the fourth ShejiCon. This year we will celebrate felicitous five, so come up with something GOOD!

  5. Neco-ji

I would LOVE to see the big cat sanctuary! But I also like the ideas of the tea party and green sauce pizza party (at least with the pizza party, I can really shine, even if my tea party manners are rather Lord Topari-ish! lol)

I will alert my spouse to the options, but I’m sure he’d find those quite agreeable. I wouldn’t mind the wine and/or distillery tours, but spouse is much less inclined to drinking than I.

    😀

  6. CJ

They have neat kitchen gadgets and the machinery is interesting; but Arbor Crest winery is high up a hill with a grand view, and has gardens and such. I didn’t hike it last time, having blown my knee out, but I’m in much better form now.

  7. Teasel

Booked in at the Hampton from the 17-19. As you can see I’ll be a bit late as the gig in Princeton ends late Sunday afternoon and I didn’t want to drive straight down that night. If you’re planning to move fast through strange country it’s better to do it in daylight. Also, as evidenced by CJ’s recent trip to Grand Coulee, its quite scenic and it would be a shame not to see it. So me and the car will be available around mid-afternoon to suppertime on Monday.
I also quit dithering about Sasquan and registered there. However I haven’t booked hotel space yet. Would I be better to extend my stay at the Hampton and commute to the convention or should I try for one of the convention hotels? Convention hotels usually offer some convenient parking, which is important to somebody who doesn’t know the city, but on the other hand they are usually zoos, and even in my party animal years I wasn’t a party animal.
Re: Shejicon V entertainment, I’m easy. (Within reason -no base-jumping for example) If I’d do something as frivolous as spend a week in Spokane hotels with the Canadian dollar the way it is, I’m not going to quibble about costs for any planned outings. The company is what counts anyway. I understand Spokane has a museum, which I’d like to investigate at some point, but all is really negotiable.

  8. ready4more

@ Teasel – The con hotels may already be full, and the prices in the downtown area are bound to be too high for the quality you would expect. Try booking a room through the Sasquan site. If you can’t get a room, then see if you can extend at the Hampton in order to ensure you have a room. ReadyGuy and I have a room at the DoubleTree (which is the closest to the Convention Center and shares a parking garage), but we booked the first day reservations were available. The Red Lion is walking distance convenient and the Davenport is the party hotel.

    • joekc6nlx

One presumes Teasel will bring her guitar again….I plan to bring mine, too….once I get back into the swing of playing, which is not going to be before the end of this month. Still in a splint on the left hand, but looking forward to doing “Pushing the Speed of Light” with Jane and CJ again…..and maybe this time, I will remember to play “Crooked Jack”, too..

      • Teasel

Yup. I’m okayed to sing at the Princeton Traditional Music Festival and coming straight to Spokane after, so there will be no chance to ditch the guitar. Please feel free to tell me to shut up and/or go away if too much kumbaya threatens to break out.

        • joekc6nlx

well, for me, it’s going to depend on how well my hand has healed by then. I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to play.

I don’t have the vast repertoire that I’d like to have, but then, I don’t get out much…. 😉

          • joekc6nlx

I shouldn’t be looking at the map….that’s such a long drive…..uphill both ways, too!!!!

    • Teasel

Hotel room was booked through the Sasquan site. The only one that still appeared to have rooms (of the initial list) was the Davenport, so that is where I am. Sasquan says they will add additional hotels as demand arises so all is not lost if other slugs like me are tardy in getting their registrations together.

  9. 82Eridani

I know we can’t do it all, but I like the old standbys. Anthony’s (Huckleberry Slump!) and Steamplant are favorites. A winery tour and the big cat sanctuary sound great! Japanese Garden, Carousel, and drinks at the Davenport. Coeur d’Alene dinner cruise. The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture and Manito Park and Botanical Gardens sound interesting as well.

Anything, as long as I can hang out with my salads.

Gift ideas…need to mull that a bit.

  10. ready4more

Hostess gift has been purchased and I am in the midst of buying art for raffling to pay for said hostess gift and party decorations. Please let us know if you intend to attend…

    • joekc6nlx

Yes……even though it’s a long drive uphill both ways…. I will be there.

  11. mmberry

I have a Sasquascon membership to part with. I forgot how much I really hate flying and other things. Ask Warrior of Worry to send me a message on Facebook if she doesn’t mind being an intermediary. I am only slightly closer than Joe and the thought of driving is not a pleasant thing. I would spend the entire time dreading the drive home. I could NOT find any email addresses on this thread to send a private message to the coordinator.

Shejidani Associates and Members of the Wavy Navy

A hostess gift has been procured.
Your planning committee is now in the dreaded “fund raising” stage.

This year we will be raffling off two Todd Lockwood prints.
Each is a 9.5” x 14” unframed heavy glossy paper poster of cover artwork done by Todd.

The first is the cover from Peacemaker titled Peacemaker with an original Remarque of an ateva with head bowed, personally signed and inscribed ShejiCon V.

The second is a copy of the cover for Tracker titled “Tea and Politics” with a Remarque of the teapot, personally signed and inscribed ShejiCon V.

I’m sure Nand’ CJ will sign as well thus making these posters true collectibles. The cost of shipping for associates unable to attend will be included as part of the prize.

One raffle ticket will cost $10 USD or three tickets for $25 USD with a maximum of six tickets per person, so that everyone has a chance, baji-naji. Additional contributions towards the hostess gift will be gratefully accepted.

Cash payment will be accepted at ShejiCon V until the Space Pirate Barbeque starts. If you cannot attend, we ask that you forward your ticket money via PayPal to ksiplaw [at] hotmail [dot] com no later than 15 August to ensure we have received payment before the festivities. Please make sure to mark it as “sending money to family or friends”, otherwise they hold it as a business transaction and charge a higher transaction fee at this end..

If you have any questions please contact the committee members through bajio [dot] kabisu [at] gmail [dot] com.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Below is the mostly finalized schedule for ShejiCon V 16-20 August 2015 in Spokane, WA:

We have most attendees arriving mid-day on Sunday the 16th, so dinner that day (Sunday) at Swinging Door. Easy, inexpensive, and varied.

Monday 17th Breakfast at hotels, Anthony’s for a lunch or huckleberry slumps: cheaper than dinner. We could then swing out by Arbor Crest for the view or go out to Manito Park which is about a 15 to 20 minute drive. Other suggested activities include Aunties’ bookstore and drinks at the Grand Davenport (newly remodeled). Dinner will be more spur of the moment. An evening swimming pool party at the Hampton is a possibility.

Tuesday 18th Breakfast at hotels; mid/morning: Looff Carousel and downtown area; Lunch at Clinkerdaggers’ which has a view right above the falls, and again, priced accordingly, eating outside. Clinkerdaggers preferred over the Steamplant, because of the attached shops, parking and walkability. Shopping at the Flour Mill, which has Wonders of the World, a sort of Curiosity Shop, where you can part with a few dollars for a trinket, or big bucks if you want other things. You can also cross the footbridge over part of the falls, which is kind of neat. Latah Creek has a new tasting room in downtown Spokane. Late dinner at Knockaderry – order off of the menu.

For Wednesday 19th Breakfast at hotels; morning/mid-day activities including Dry Fly Distillery and/or Latah Creek wine tasting at participants discretion. Prep for party. The day ends with the Space Pirate Barbeque or a green sauce pizza party starting around 5:00pm. This is likely to be the most heavily attended party as Worldcon attendees will be in town starting on the 19th. During the Barbeque we’d like to have a mini-contest to suggest names for the book after Visitor, if Nand’CJ would be so kind as to give us a short tease about where the series is going. We will arrange time for CJ to sign the Todd Lockwood posters we are raffling off, and autograph any books for attendees. The raffle will be held during the barbeque.

Most attendees will either be departing early on Thursday 20th or attending WorldCon activities so a good bye breakfast at a local pancake place such as we had last year will conclude ShejiCon V. Volunteers are solicited to assist with cleanup at CJ’s house.

NB: If we are going to have a green sauce pizza party, the chefs (Associates) will need to shop for ingredients and start pizza dough prep early enough that CJ’s kitchen isn’t stacked five deep (an impossibility). A crew for decorating the yard is solicited.

BGrandrath – no canoe trip down the Little Spokane so no probability of drowning this trip, and Neco-ji won’t lose her glasses trying to see the moose under water.

All activities and meals are the participant’s responsibility except for the Space Pirate Barbeque. Green sauce pizza will be provided by any chefs that volunteer before hand (donations for special requests gratefully accepted). There is no fee to attend but we do ask you to contribute by purchasing raffle tickets. The tickets will pay for the hostess gift, the raffle items, and will be used to defray the cost of decorations and some meals for CJ and Jane.

I’m going to go look for that little family-owned restaurant where we had breakfast twice with CJ and Jane……the one with the tremendous Belgian waffles……I don’t remember its name, but if I can find the hotel we stayed in last year, I can find that restaurant….

  16. ready4more

Joe, That’s the one I had in mind, because it’s easy enough for the Associates in town for WorldCon to find. All will be at CJ and Jane’s wish.

  17. elrond

Yay! We are booking hotel today and plan on being there on Tuesday.

    nancy & trevin

  18. ready4more

We’ll add the two of you to our list. Glad you could make it.
    Where will you be staying?
Will you be renting a vehicle?

More info to follow for our Associates planning to meet us there…

    • elrond

Oh, my bad, there will be three of us. Maybe not for everything, but definitely for the BBQ. We will be staying at the Grand next to the convention center and we have our car (we are driving up from LA for the convention – Road Trip :-).

  19. joekc6nlx

I’ll remind folks that we distribute name badges at ShejiCons. Your screen name, your first name (last names are not usually used), your home city, or if that’s too specific, your home state/province/country.

We also include your avatar on the badge, so that names and screen names can be matched with avatars. If you don’t have an avatar, or here on WWAS, a gravatar, CJ has included instructions on the right hand column of the home page. If you have both a Shejidan avatar AND a WWAS gravatar, you can have either one, or both on your badge.

I need to have the information at least a week before ShejiCon V, so I can get them printed up and ready.

    • 82Eridani

Joe, I’ve PMd you at Shejidan with my info. Thanks!

      • joekc6nlx

thank you, I have yours…..I have last years’ tags on a template, but it won’t let me edit that template (yet). If I can figure out what it was I did that locked them, then I can just make simple changes to the tags for the people who are returning this year.

  20. ready4more

Thanks Joe, Do you have my info from last year? I can resend if not.

    • joekc6nlx

Actually, I can redownload your avatar and gravatar. IIRC, you want both on your badge…
