readySon spent the holiday with us from out of town, and made the “mistake” of saying “Donate everything” left in his room…. Next time he visits, he’ll be lucky to have anything other than the curtains on the windows and an inflatable bed. I wish readyDaughter would do the same thing, but she is using her room here as her storage locker so that her apartment across town is not overcrowded.
I walk into my “library-to-be” and think, I’ve got to get organized, start tossing things I don’t need. And then, I turn around and walk out………….the boss is slacking, not keeping his people busy at their jobs……I’m looking at getting some bookcases at the local IKEA, although I could probably make them myself. I just need the right plywood and I haven’t found that yet. Still looking.
Happy New Year from the east coast! We are organizing here too- we worked in the attic today and will clear at least one room in the basement tomorrow so that the plumber can work on Thursday :|. Anyway, I resolve to work on closets and do some painting in January.
We are trying to do some culling too; books are getting easier since I got an e-reader, but there are certain dead tree books I’ll keep. But with ebooks I can definitely cut back on the number of Ikea bookcases in the house. At the New Year’s Eve dinner we went to tonight, I was talking to a friend about the DSW sale racks in the of the store. I’ve stayed well away from them now for a few years, and still have way too many shoes. Another group of items that needs some serious culling…
Happy New Year to all!
Happy New Year to one and all!
A Happy 2014 to you, Jane and all the Wave followers!
Happy New Year!
I’ve just been watching The Secret of Roan Inish, a movie set on the west coast of Ireland after WWII, about selkies or silkies (half seal, half human). I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The style of the movie is just right for a story like this. No special effects, no cuteness, no fake emotions. Just a good story well told and beautifully filmed.
You could say that it’s a movie about story telling and family history. Except that the family has a selkie in its family tree, and some of its present members have a connection with that side of the family.
Here’s the trailer
It’s rated 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and deserves it.
A very happy New Year’s Day to all of the Wavy Navy. I’m debating searching the cable to see if I can find the Rose Bowl parade, which I haven’t seen for years. We had a spread last night at our friend’s house that couldn’t be beat, then watched several houses in the neighborhood compete for best display of completely illegal aerial fireworks. A couple of someones in the area launched little quad copters, probably to get aerial footage of the fireworks, and they were hovering over the mountain like little Christmas UFOs.
I’d be happier if’n I could see the sun! 🙁 I can’t exactly remember the last truly sunny day we had. 🙁 When things get calm in winter it’s real easy for the moisture to settle in the valley air and not go anywhere until some storm blows in, stirs it all up and carries it away. 🙁
Happy New Year to all. 2013 was a tough one for me but I’m looking forward to 2014.
Happy new year to everyone! It’s a brand new year and I’m convinced it’s going to be a good one!
Happy New Year to all! I don’t post much but I come here nearly every day to see what’s happening 😉
GreenWyvern, I remember seeing that movie when it came out in the theater. Thought it was very good.
Happy New Year to everyone.
Indeed, a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year to all!
Over the weekend we put our pictures back up in the dining room that we wall-papered last (oops, no, now “the year before” last) year. The dining table and most of the side tables are still clean from our big anniversary/solstice party and we had friends over today for our traditional Eggs Benedict brunch on a clean, well set table with our nice china, silverware and crystal goblets out for the mimosas. I’m still admiring how nice my normally over-run with stuff dining room looks. It won’t last because the table and room is my spouse’s computer space/craft table… But the Yuletide miracle of neatness still holds into the New Year.
Happy New Year! I hope life is full of joy and laughter, good health, good friends, good books :), and rich memories.
Me?
I plan to clean the house by New Year’s following the Japanese custom of having everything cleaned up by the end of the year.
Had the same plan 12 months ago, at least there is less to do this year.
Had to laugh. I moved in 2007 too…..and still have a garage full of boxes. I need to build the studio in the north pasture before I have space to organize all my art stuff (sigh). No, I’m not selling off or discarding the supplies I’ll use to get back into dabbling in artsy things after I retire….
Happy new year everyone! Lynn Abbey’s got a new post up on her blog too.
Hooray! I may finally get my sunny day. 🙂 A storm blew thru last night and this morning dawned clear, if a bit frosty, with only the barest hint of morning fog in the shadows behind the hills.
We had a front blow thorough last night, between midnight and 4 a.m. Got up about 3 to use the bathroom and trip over the cat, and you couldn’t see past the house eaves for all the rain pouring off them. We needed the rain.
Beautiful sights this morning! 😉
Yesterday morning was bright and sunny, but broken clouds blew over in the afternoon. Last night was clear allowing temperatures to drop, I saw 28°F when I got up to turn up the furnace, condensing the moisture in the air, turning it to freezing fog which coated the tree branches and grass. Didn’t look like that much until the sun got up and lit up the white, sparkly grass. 🙂 The branches looked best at the moment the frosty/icy coating melted and there were thousands of water droplets reflecting the light, both white and little sparks of pure color! 🙂 Too soon they started dripping off. 🙁
I just noticed this and as Invitations (as well as Bren’s latest) was published in 2013 I thought you might want to mention it here. It’s another opportunity to get Closed Circle mentioned & linked where people can see it.
Scalzi’s got a page up where only authors or editors can mention any F/SF book of theirs that might be eligible for nomination for an SF/F award this year – if I understand the rules correctly that’s all books and short stories published in this genre in 2013; your new Closed Circle publication should qualify for one of the awards categories, if enough people nominate it, so they are eligible to mention here, including links to the story.

Last time you had trouble logging in there, but maybe it’ll work again?
Jane’s four ‘Netwalker books are from 2013 as well, and should thus be eligible for some categories if I understand the rules right. Mentioning them there could get more people to try them, and they deserve a much wider audience than they’re getting at the moment. I just finished Wildcards, and it was really really good. She’d have to post them herself according to Scalzi’s rules, so I left a message for her on her own blog as well.
