Trying to maintain sanity and a writing schedule while getting other things done, not to mention our recurring pest ‘bot that afflicted Jane’s blog. She’s got a new format up which we hope will lock out the ‘bot. Plus there is a scan artifact that crept in on Hellburner and Heavy Time, and Jane is trying to pursue that so we can get people a corrected file. And the corrected file of Faery Moon; and Jane is trying to get HER next book up on CC; plus we are approaching US Nationals, where we have tickets, and we are going to sit in the stands withΒ (paper)Β notebooks and work on graphic details during Zamboni runs…
I damn near broke my neck yesterday: had a blood sugar crisis or a bug or something, but I was feeling woozy when I went onto the ice to skate, pulled a few three-turns and didn’t feel stable, so I just decided to skate flat for a while, and on the same round,Β dropped a blade twiceΒ into a hockey-skate run (killer) which wrenched my foot sideways—bad posture on my part, but not too bad, since I didn’t fall; just got an adrenaline rush that finished the blood sugar crisis. I found myself shaking all over, not real great when you are the full width of the rink from your exit. Jane got quite concerned. I just skated off, trying to stay steady enough not to kill myself, dropped my blade into one MORE hockey rut, and managed the 100 or so more feet to leave the ice. I was so woozy I could hardly climb the steps to get up to the walking deck. I had some Gatorade and that helped, but I was just wiped for the rest of the day. Dunno what it was, but I had a nasty sinus attack, coughed all night, and feel somewhat less than perfect today…I canNOT come down sick with those expensive tickets impending.
But I’m better today. Not worse. And that’s good. We’re working a fix for those files, as aforesaid, and we are also going to be working on those ship-patch designs. Let me know what ships you’re most interested in.
I think I’m going to do a short story before I take on the next book, whatever I decide to do, since this finishes the current arc. I have a few lines written, and hope that it will clear my head and give me a little break.
I get those low blood sugar moments at work sometimes it is awful. They are even worse when you have them while driving. Heh maybe we we should get our selves checked out C.J. π
Ship patch I’d be interested in: Finity’s End. My absolute favorite. Another favorite: Dublin Again. And yet a third: ECS 5 Norway.
I’ll echo both comments above. Great choices for patches! Sugar issues – well, Christmas cookies are gone now, so I’m hoping to stabilize.
Have you tried nasal irrigation (pouring salt water up one nostril, through your sinuses, and out the other)? It won’t help with the sugar problems, but for some of the headaches, sniffles, and allergies, it might prove helpful. There have been nights where I just can’t get to sleep because I keep sneezing, and doing that fixes the problem for the night. It washes the irritants out of the nasal passages, so there is less for the body to react to.
Oh, yes. Nasty, but effective. I did that this morning.
You will note a particularly obnoxious avatar above: this is going to appear on prior posts of mine, because we are trying to forestall a spam attack on this website and I had to play games with accounts (mine.)
silly looking thing!
I second that! Ayr sinus rinse has kept me breathing for several years now. I swear by the process. I’ve got a weird sinus infection that absolutely won’t go away, but this keeps the sinus clear…and I haven’t really had any sort of congestion since I started doing it regularly.
A short story set in Compact Space is what I’m rooting for!
[hope you get your blood sugar stabilized]
I WANT LUCY!
I’ve had those episodes of blood sugar crisis, in my case, it’s stay out of my way, because I get really irritable. I have tried for years to find out what’s causing these attacks, because I’m not diabetic. I had one test done right at the onset of an attack, they couldn’t figure out what caused it, as insulin, blood sugar, all other functions were normal. Talk about frustrating. I used to think it was because of a high sugar/high caffeine breakfast, but I would get them at a very young age, too, before I started drinking coffee. My parents weren’t big on sugary cereals, although there were some in the house.
If I sit for about a half hour, my systems kick in and bring me back, or if it’s really bad, I have to get something to eat NOW! If it gets that far, I’m wrecked for the rest of the day, too. I just wish I knew why!
The ice, while actually in fairly good shape Zamboni-wise yesterday, was just plain…odd. I sunk a deep crater into it when a toepick caught. The sound was so weirdly “crunchy” that I even skated to back to examine the ice.
Joan took a look at the resultant “speed trap” (killer gouge with secondary shattering), and commented it was a result of our recent weather fluctuations – unseasonably warm to very cold. The humidifier can’t keep up & the ice becomes unusually brittle.
Well, you can guess the ship patch I would most like to see! I second Jane’s motion.
I guess you can throw in Finity’s End just for fun, since it sounds like all you need is to fill the circle with black…

Yea, yea, glad you’re alive. π Now for the important stuff. What world is this short story going to be set in? Details, details, inquiring minds want to know!
If you want to farm out any file cleanup/proofreading stuff, I’ve got a little room in my schedule. Concentrate on the stuff that only you can do. Including looking after yourself; that one is *important*.
Thanks for the offer. I’ve about got the HT and HB files cleaned up. (and yes, she’s concentrating on writing again.) It was really sneaky stuff and lots of fixing the smart quotes. I couldn’t do globals because I think the problems (mostly involving em-dashes and quotes) were put in with a global, which means every instance had to be examined.
Normally, I’d use this as an excuse to read the books, but Carolyn didn’t want to bother me and really wanted those books up, so I just helped convert the files. Then, we got comments about shifting fonts, and I actually looked at the files and realized there were lots and lots of scanning artifacts remaining—really sneaky stuff like numeric 1 instead of letter l. Normally, this is an easy global. Most books don’t have numeric 1 anywhere in them. But it would be on the one book in history that has tons of numerics.
anyway, after several days of going back and forth between RoL copyedits and ms with much the same kind of detail work and the last couple of days doing HB and HT…I’m kinda cross-eyed, but I think I’ve got all the files fairly clean.
We shall see.
Later today, I’ll be sending out emails to all who have bought the books with new download links. My apologies in advance.
Like HRHSpence I’d love a Compact space story…
And I hope the sinus thing is retreating.
*holding thumbs*
(Holding thumbs is what we Swedish people do instead of crossing fingers – we cross fingers /behind our backs/ when we’re lying ;-))
It’s not a ship patch, but I’ll buy a Resune logo patch!
Oh, and a Resune logo coffee mug!!
Eeeewwww, yeah! I want a mug (actually, I’d like a stein, but they don’t offer those…wah) that is Reseune-Space (infinite man in a spacesuit) when cold and Reseune (infinite man au naturale) when it heats up!
Neither is possible, at least from Cafe Press, but wouldn’t it be fun? π π π
Hope all is well health and writing wise. Ice can be such dangerous stuff……I fell last week…..caught the toe of my boot in a crack…..the ice sounded ‘crunchy’…..sounded like it had a layer of air between it and the layer below….not sure that this is possible……anyhoooo….I am carrying my cell phone now…even when I go out to the car!! Looking forward to the U.S.Nationals….should we look for you in the stands?
π π
You’re coming for Nationals! How fun! Absolutely….I sent you a private email with my cell phone #. Yippee!
Alas…….I was not very clear about that…….I will be watching on the telly :(……maybe some day! π
And you can look for us, I’m pretty sure, opposite the kiss and cry/tv corner, at the corner, about 2 rows back. Judges are on the same side as the k&c, opposite us. OSG and friend will be in the balcony above the judges. And several of our skating group will be here and there. They’re holding all the competition in the same arena this year, so we won’t have to trek half a mile between the novices and seniors. We will like to go over to the Davenport Hotel after the day’s competition at least once: a significant number of the skaters, coaches, and commentators hang out in the Peacock Bar after, and we’ve had some fun encounters.
Wait… Ship Patches?? That’s not in the Poll at top right.
I’d agree with ECS 5 Norway and Lucy – but I think I’d really go for “Pride of Chanur”, and what would Nekkekt look like?
Patches….Norway…..Le Cygne…..Pride of Chanur….do they even *have* patches?
Maybe a big hairball? (ducking and running…)
Hairball’d be a Chi, wouldn’t it? π
Oh and Shai-shan….I think the most beautifully, appropriately and fortuitously named ship of all. π π π
Smartcat observed: “the ice sounded βcrunchyββ¦..sounded like it had a layer of air between it and the layer belowβ¦.not sure that this is possible”
Very possible, and even probable: sublimation.
More unasked for advice. Sinus thing: If you don’t want to use a complicated setup, and if your problems don’t call for it, just gargle with warm salty water for awhile. Just make sure that your gargling in the back of your throat where the nasal passages come in. Should let sinuses drain for awhile, especially if combined with long, hot showers–helps the sinuses to drain, especially with pain/headaches, etc.. But my problems with this are more minor, mainly in August/September and if I have some sort of cold. Other people really, really suffer. By the way, this is exactly what my doctors recently advised, but I learned it in childhood.
More important, consult your friends who are medical professionals. If you are having near fainting spells while exercising, I would investigate thoroughly. All sorts of endocrine work-up, thyroid etc. Plus, well whatever. It might just have been something as simple as orthostatic hypotension (light headedness when you elevate the head quickly) but you probably I think should have this checked out.
But again, you may have done all of this. Sorry for my mother henlike, unasked for, advice.
Lol: we’re on thyroid meds, but also working up to 18 hours a day, and prone to ear troubles and sinus infection, both of us. I think my problem was identifiable as dietary and/or a 24-hour bug that got me in the gut: dieting, stress, too many vitamins and not enough food, plus not taking in enough fluids to balance outgo…I’m ok. Just a little dehydrated right along with everything else…and then you go out and try to hit the ice at the old speed when you’ve been off for weeks: the muscles know they’re under demand, but the resources just aren’t there. The adrenaline charge of hitting the bad ice and having to do a core-strength recovery several times in a handful of minutes, ditto hard on the reserves…which just hit rock bottom.
I had a blood-sugar crash like that one afternoon last spring. Got up out of a meeting to collect stuff from the printer, and nearly fell on the floor when I had the papers in hand. I had to sit down and eat _right now_ – fortunately the printer is close to my cube, and I had some trail mix in my bag. (My then-boss wasn’t too happy about me disappearing from the meeting, though.)
