… This was a problem at the host involving a particular server. We are now back, and we believe the host has now solved its problem. This solution may also answer certain questions such as the sudden rash of download errors we have had at Closed Circle, which have required our intervention. We hope to provide a level of service that does not include download errors. So keeping fingers crossed, after losing first our e-mail and then all our sites today, we are now up and running.
Apologies to anyone inconvenienced by the situation. We think it is now fixed.
To error is human. To really mess up requires a computer.
I should mention an Ad Astra Science Fiction Convention about twenty years ago, where the hotel had just installed a new registration computer system, which was a total disaster. Ad Astra always ran a panel at the end of the con for complaints, and it was really well attended that year. After the tenth or so complaint about the hotel registration system, Grant, who was the ConCom member hosting the panel said, “Everybody here who works in the computer industry or knows someone who works in the computer industry, please put up your hands.” Every hand in the room went up. “OK, we all know about computers don’t we?” he continued.
I was sitting beside the hotel staffers who were monitoring the panel. You could tell that they didn’t take us seriously. I mean, a bunch of goofs who like Star Trek and Star Wars? They yawned through all of the computer complaints, and then blanched when every hand in the room went up. The look of shock on their faces was priceless.
