Now I’m chilling—every afternoon. At least it’s consistent. Jeans, heavy teeshirt, floor length velour robe, socks, and three blankets, and a feather quilt, and that is enough to finally get me warmed up again. The crud is now a sore throat, I think because my ears are involved; and my eyes are scratchy. Really, really avoid this stuff if you can.
The bug resurges…gah!

May I praise black tea with milk and sugar?
I hit a weight plateau. I had been having Earl Grey tea even on fast days, but I re-ran the numbers and I was going over 600 kcal, so I switched to herbal tea with artificial sweetener. Post hoc ergo propter hoc and all that, but I think resuming the Earl Grey, to soothe a scratchy throat, has knocked me off the plateau.
Here’s my hypothesis. I tend to have tea early in the morning, while the bulk of my calories are in the evening. The calories, low and slowly drunk though they are, may be kicking my metabolism into higher gear. Also, if you think about the normal calorie burn rates–2000 for women, 2500 for men–that’s more calories in an hour than drinking tea. So, I’ll see if I keep losing faster having tea with (non-fat) milk and (raw) sugar.
Nothing more soothing than a warm cuppa.
Miladies, do please you get to a Doctor of Physick with some Haste, this hath persisted too long all-together.
Here it raineth cold and miserably, and ’tis well to be in-side, chez moi, as the Prognosticator of Weather still claimeth it shall get down unto Freezing within two and three Nights.
The Cats they declare this good Weather for to sleep abed us Three to-gather in Harmony, cozy and warm.
Best Wishes!
A Three-Cat Night? ๐
Verily, Ben doth speak truthfully!
Well, the Three would be both Cats and me, but aye, ’tis a Three-Cat Night indeed!
Ye gads, I’d better not tempt Fate. If’n another Critter sheweth up on such a Night, I don’t think I could say Nay. I have no idea what I’d do if a Human shewed up. That would be a most Straunge Night!
pssssst–use “hie thee” for “get” ๐
We had sleet Friday and snow Sunday, and it’s been in the 20’s here in Tx Panhandle for days now. We’ve been having some “Three Cat Nights” chez moi, with all three piling on. Put my comforter on the bed and have been quite snuggly. Am knitting socks to make a new pair of “sock feet”— like those old knitted slippers with soles on them. I’m using pieces of cowhide leather for the soles, sewing them onto handknitted thick socks. First pair I made (proof of concept) were worn daily for two winters and finally wore through the bottom of the socks. Kept my tootsies toasty. I just cut the soles off the old pair and sew them onto the new pair. Am also knitting me a large, thick ruana for in the house wear as I have to set the thermostat at 68 or my gas bill is higher than giraffe’s ears. So far, I’ve been able to avoid the crud du jour, knock wood.
Hot water bottle? Warm flaxseed neck wrap? Heating pad, although it’s hard to walk around with that one. Our thermostat is set at 58, so these items are my constant companions, especially while sick. Hope you are both better soon!!
Actually, my muffies have gone walkabout, and I was using a pair that aren’t so warm; Jane gave me one of my Christmas gifts (every year she manages to find yet one more pair of leopard-print muffies) and they’re wonderful. I spent the day in new muffies, bundled up in outdoor clothes AND a robe, and managed to get the chills under control. We are still a plague ship here, but at least I had a good night!
When my footwear goes missing, I follow the resident felines around. If I asked, they’d just look at me and say, “What footwear? Removable paw fur? Haven’t seen it”.
MSN just posted a story reconfirming your choice of the Prius V as a good one. Over 5 years, you can expect to save about $1500 over a conventional model. Even though you’re presently reduced to going about with a little bell and yelling “Unclean! Unclean!!”, you can take small comfort in your wise choice.
Lol! It makes a difference in ordinary budget. If we fill up the Prius from dead empty, it costs us 32 dollars. If we filled the Subaru, which is still pretty economical, it would be 48 dollars…(bigger tank)…but we’d have refilled the Subaru far more often, like every two weeks since mid July. We’ve refilled the Prius three times for trips, which pretty well used the fill entirely, but only twice for round-town stuff, and it’s now verging on December. The Subaru would get filled once every highway 300 miles, pretty well, but that’s 5 more gallons larger tank than the Prius, which also gets 300 miles per tank…crazy math. But it’s nice driving past gas stations. And it turns out to handle well in snow, too. We love the color. And with the lower gas, we can afford to go to the car wash. ๐ The only problem thus far is the microfiber seat fabric, which does grab cat-fur. We now carry a sticky-roller when we’re about to take on passengers. The room, however, is great: that extra two inches means we can pack things flat that used to have to stand up.
That’s when you go in for seat covers, or even a fleece throw for the back seat.
I had my Prius ion last weekend for necessary maintenance – conventional battery had died – adn they also did some work on the front strut linkages and the boots around them. They said the car is fine otherwise.
Aye, but are you figuring in the amortized cost of a battery replacement?
It’s still under 50k miles, so it’s not yet a problem. The cost of a new pack of rechargeables isn’t impossible any more, although it’s still liable to run a couple of thousand dollars.
Oh, I feel for you both. I didn’t manage to dodge it either – and I’ve literally “lost” three weeks (although to be fair, the first week was bronchitis, not flu crud). My Dr. ran all the tests, but (thankfully) nothing systemic, “just” (!!!) a virus. (And then a second virus piggybacked – painful red dime-sized lumps on my legs and (increased) joint pain – aka Erythema nodosum.)
Now I’m at that frustrating point where I’m awake, but not very functional.
Masks, people! Wash your hands! Stay away from sick people! I honestly wouldn’t wish this on my very worst enemy.
And I’m here to tell you…saline rinse, mucinex, gargling salt…keep those pathways open and flushed. So far, I’ve avoided both the cough and terrible stuffiness. I’m still weak and occasionally a bit dizzy (ear swelling) but I can breath and I’m avoiding the cough. Every time I get a tickle, I go rinse that post nasal drip away and the cough goes with it. From everything I’m hearing, that cough is the real killer of this crud. Keeps you from sleeping and just wears your down. If you don’t rinse and musinex right from the start, your sinuses swell and you can’t rinse….which lets the PND rule your life. ๐
I think saline rinses and hot tea have been helpful for the canker sores on tongue and gums. ๐ No idea what prompted ’em, not kissin’ nobody.
I only lost three weeks to Der Bugg. But that was because I had already seen it in friends – the sort whop when they think they are getting better -start trying to resume some sort of life. When I reached that point I pulled out a miserably tangled mess of black yarn (looks like a Knnn!) and spent two weeks teasing my way through it. (still have a bit to go)!
The best cure (inaddition to soup, garlic and ginger) is to bore the ratbastard to death.
Take care, and keep taking things slow. Even when you think you are better – plan two or three more days of boredom.
The weather looks foul here for tomorrow. I think I am leaving 0-dark-hundred on t
Thursday instead of driving into tomorrows gale.
Please take care!
I think I have lived in a time warp. I ask the grocery store where the Theraflu is, since I’m down to the last of mine.
Oh, the feds pulled it two, three *years* ago.
Bummer! It’s the one that works on this stuff. So I’m going to try Alkaselzer’s new day/night cold stuff…hoping…
I do not want that bug. Ick, ack, ugh! — But must go out either over the weekend or early next week, errands wait for no man.
I must say that I disagree. Not only do they wait, but they also jump out from hiding and tackle you!
What was that bit I saw on a t-shirt once? โThe problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We donโt just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.โ ~~James D. Nicoll
I love that one.
We’re getting the as rain right now the big snow/sleet storm that’s been making it’s way across the country…. It was drizzling as I came home from work in Boston and is raining steadily now… But the ground can really use the rain.
It’s been — to pick up on another thread — a three cat night for a week or so now in the house — makes for cramped but warm sleeping all around with myself and my spouse in the double bed, along with Mousie Tongue (now our “small” large cat) and the two Foxtrot brothers (now huge, orange behemoths). I sleep wedged, I must say, and Whiskey & Tango Foxtrot are so heavy that I can’t easily slide a foot under them when I want to stretch out.
The Foxtrot Brothers reminds me of the name of the 11th season NCIS episode in which Ziva bailed on the team, which was Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. I think they ought to recruit the red head coast guard agent to take her place. I like her.
whatever I caught 2 weeks ago is still manifesting itself, although not as violently as before. My internal thermostat is still a bit erratic, and the stomach is still queasy at the thought of food. Mainly, I’m just plain tired, and a full night’s sleep doesn’t seem to do anything to alleviate that exhaustion. It’s not the quantity of sleep, it’s the quality, and I fear my sleep apnea is manifesting itself in classic fashion. I cannot use the machines, as much as I have tried, I cannot sleep with them, and I turned in the machine that had the greatest potential the day I got sick. When it does more to keep me awake than to help me sleep, it’s of no use to me, and I’ll take my chances with the apnea.
Best wishes for a return to good health to everyone!
I’ve avoided the crud thus far, but we will have relatives and friends from different places visiting us for the holiday, so I’m hoping that no one brings anything my immune system doesn’t recognize.
We’re well-stocked with tissues and mucinex, just in case.
I, on the other hand, am feeling very pleased. Often in November we get a week or more of dry weather, as we’ve been having, before the deluge. This afternoon I got out the rider, added a splash of gas, then ran around the backyard chopping & picking up apple and maple leaves for the compost piles. Then I pulled it back to the garage, left it running until the gas ran out, changed the oil (better for the bearings), checked the battery (water OK, fully charged–for now), and put it up clean and dry until April! ๐ ๐ ๐
This is often more of a struggle.
If you are around anyone with a kid in daycare or public school, you might as well paint a bulls eye on your chest. Day Care and the public school systems are the epidemiologists’ equivalent of high cotton.
Off topic, Logitech has a wireless keyboard that stands on it’s back edge, for those like me with very limited desk space. It also has a tapered front edge, which I love. Nice price too considering it includes a mouse. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VANO7C/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And as for mice, my previous one developed terminal scroll wheel paralysis recently and I got this one to replace it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006MBP7T0/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 — it only has one moving part, which doesn’t move all that much, and it scrolls like a touch pad.
