…that’s the S&S anthology I have a short story in. Lou Anders is the editor, and it’s from Harper. There’s also a version that is signed by all the participants, for those of you who are into collections.

first two pages of the story are on Amazon.com. Looks good !
They have exclusivity on the story until June 2011, after which the story will be on Closed Circle.
I’ll contain myself in patience until you publish it….
Well, heck. I trotted over to Amazon and picked up the Kindle version.
But I’ll gladly get the short from Closed Circle. I bought Wooden Sword the other day.
That reminds me to read the Dreaming Tree trilogy, with its wildly complex ancient Gaelic/Celtic spellings and pronunciation.
Last night, I listened to the interview of CJ by Dragon Page Cover to Cover, the podcast, episode 414A. There was one serious problem with the interview: It was too short! I would’ve loved to hear more about Foreigner, ebook publishing, and book writing. I’m now subscribed to their podcast.
Their next episode’s (415A) interview was with Tracy Hickman, who had some interesting ideas on publishing and SF&F. While I thought some of what he said was a bit wild, a great deal of it was a good analysis and useful thoughts on how things are going and where they might lead authors and publishers. So I’d recommend listening to the episode.
It’ll be fun to see what sort of things a Cherryh story might get up to in the realm of sword and sorcery, fantasy and faerie. I’ll look forward to reading the other shorts, since that’ll turn up some favorite writers and some new gems, people whose work I’ll want to find.
One thing I’ve noticed lately, is that with my time so divided into tiny chunks, short stories are very handy. I can get in a few short stories and not worry over-much about “losing my place” in the book. I love novels, but just like with Foreigner 1, it’s now been about two weeks since I last opened it to read. (In between, the only book I’ve been reading has been My Baby Rides the Short Bus, which I’d highly recommend.) I’m really, really looking forward to diving into Foreigner 1 and getting a hundred or so pages read this weekend, or if I’m lucky, getting to finish the book.
So, short stories are a really viable and appreciated option for my time lately. I would love to see publishers do more anthologies or magazines (e-zines?) along those lines. And the amateur writers on the web, and their fans, love both short stories and serialized novels (a chapter per week/month) because they can read in small chunks. I do know many web readers like to wait until a serialized novel is finished, before they tackle it, because they prefer to read all at once. Maybe that is something that experienced / pro authors and publishers can take similar advantage of, in print or ebooks or on web pages.
thanks for the CC news … I may wait till then. Will check it out in the store to see what the other stories look like.
