…i have spent some weeks working on the short stories i promised for the heroes in hell project and the poul anderson project. [with a lame keyboard. occasionally it gets important enough to use the righthand shift, but my hand just is not trained for that, so i shall be e.e. cummings today.]
both those projects were painfully slow.
i sat down to do the outline for the next bren book, and it just fell into place in five minutes.
that kinda tells you where my head has been at and why the last two projects went slowly.
i also have a new contract in the works—of course i actually have to write the books—but in today’s market, that’s a great thing.
so happy un-birthday to you all; i’m at work on the new book.
Whoopee! ๐
I just got around to reading your short story in the Swords & Dark Magic collection I got as a gift this past Christmas. Everything I’ve read in there so far has been pretty good actually. I am usually hesitant on short stories because I prefer to get more immersed than that, but it’s been a good lesson in writing. Like going for the knockout punch in the first round rather than a drawn out battle. Makes me wonder how shorter stuff like that would work in the new media world.
Keep us updated on when things like that come out. I don’t think I would have known about it had I not read about it here a few months ago.
Oboyoboyoboy! ๐ ๐ ๐
Yippee! Wonderful news!
I am at around 2/3 or more through Swords and Dark Magic. Only two of the shorts so far didn’t quite do it for me, but yours was excellent, as were several others. I’ll even go back and check for further books and shorts by one author in that story-universe, because it intrigued me.
These days, short stories suit my time constraints. I can finish a short or two, whereas I seem to keep my place in books. I can say that having the Kindle has helped, and I’m finding more time to read, as a stress-and-routine reliever, in order to enjoy reading again, like I want to. But then, I’m reading in several books, far more than I used to have going at once. So I suppose it evens out. I’m just afraid I’ll drop the plot/char threads that way, forget something important.
Rough weekend, was very tired but got somewhat caught up on sleep. Didn’t do much more than sleep, in fact. — Tonight, I’m hoping for time in Foreigner 1 and a little time on personal projects, before bedtime, since I’ll likely be wakeful. The cycle continues.
Hah, might as well be e.e. cummings; upper- and lowercase was a medieval accident anyway, even if it meant, “this text is emphasized.”
Yay more Bren! Really looking forward to it.
*happy dance, then returns to reading The Dreaming Tree*
Yes!!!!!
Scribometer: Clever name! Thanks for hatching more Bren adventures.
the scribometer is ‘dave’s’ invention, and you can install this widget on any WP blog. love it!
Congrats on the new contract negotiations. Hope it comes through for you (sending good wishes, sending good wishes…). Can you say yet if it’s a new ‘verse or a revisit?
Oh, and thanks sweetbo and BlueCatShip for the reminder about Swords and Dark Magic. So far I’ve devoured CJ’s contribution, but for some reason had put it away on the bookshelf before reading the other stories.
Yay! Bren’s got a lot of mileage left in him, I see.
As a fan, I hope that one day the Compact universe will be revisited…
chanur is one universe that, when i do extensive work for cc, may be one i deal with.
<holding breath> Hard to do while <drooling> !
Huzzah!
Ditto, Capt. Kirk. I’d love to see more Chanur or Compact stories. But then, I’d also love to see more of this story and that story, and that one over there, and….
Darn fans, so demanding. ๐
It’s hard — one could say terrifying — to enthuse about one past series for fear of detracting from another, or from some wonderful thing that has not yet seen the light of day. but… for years, the first books from my (reasonably voluminous, as it were) library that I lend to new friends have been the Chanur books, and I admit a long standing curiosity as to what Pyanfar might be doing these days…
I seemed to have missed something regarding “Heroes in Hell”! I recently managed to rearrange a bit to get the Hell, Thieves World, Merovingen, and LIavek books on the same shelf, as a prelude to reading through them all again…!
a new series (the new contract)??? that’s very exciting for us readers, and congratulations!!!
archie and i are hoping for more chanur
Chanur and Morgaine are among my personal favorites.
Oh, Chanur! And Morgaine! And Bren! And the list goes on – just keep writing, please! Congratulations on the new contract. ๐
(I’ve been quietly lurking, but as I told Jane, I’m paying attention – mostly.)
[BTW *Gr* I admire how you neatly avoided the question of which universe your new contract will explore!]
just finished betrayer! whew! i don’t know who’s better at getting into a major mess w/o trying – cajeiri or bren ;P what’s the eta of the next bren book? and i also would LOVE to revisit the chanur universe ;)) i need copies of that in ebook format, i think i lent a couple of them out to a friend…
D
To Ms. Cherryh, is there ANY way that on release day we can get a copy of the book digitally, ebook or epub? If its not releasing in digital format, is it possible if we buy the book, hold it and the receipt and the current days newspaper or something? LOL, I really want to get it on my iphone!
alas, no, I’ve looked. Penguin doesn’t have it digitalized yet and Amazon doesn’t have it yet except in hardback. Even the publisher no longer has power to affect these things.
