This will finish this Foreigner arc. Or start another. Maybe both.
One of these days I’m going to do a different thing, but right now, this arc has been so long, covering the last year since their return—I just have to do this one.
Strange things flit through my mind, after going through the genealogy thing—it’d be interesting to do Clan of the Cave Bear MY way, vignettes of certain ancestors…
The trouble is, there are so many, once the Visigoths get going…
Ah, well, that one will likely never get done.
I did leave Ari in a bit of a quandary.
I have quite a few stories I could pick up.
Here’s a completely off the wall option … I’m just re-reading “The Paladin”, which I love. Any chance of a sequel???
Yes please. That would be fun.
oh my gosh – does this mean that this last book is the big uh.. visit we’ve all been waiting for?
and also i’m trying not to be upset because writers should totally get to work on new things once in a while but… saaaad if its the last arc. Sad is what i will be. but also happy to read whatever you do next. also sad.
ahh salads.
If you’re counting raised hands, I’d love to see another Fortress book or 3 (I bet it’ll take more than one to advance the Elfwyn/Aewyn arc), or maybe a Union/Alliance one to fulfill the expectations raised by the last lines of Tripoint?
Any luck wresting the rights of the Finisterre series away from whomever is clinging to them? Getting that out a la Rusalka would be cool.
oh man. the Finisterre books were my first Cherryh books. special love for them. i do love the creepier stuff.
Finisterre for me. Anything Alliance-Union, Ari, etc.
I had assumed that Intruder/Protector/Peacemaker were the books in arc 5 — is new book book a fourth in arc 5, or the culmination of the whole shebang? A re-visit to Alliance/Union or Chanur would be most welcome (a combo would be awesome).
New Foreigner is always good – but if you need a change of pace….
Morgaine and Vanye?
Actually – the first I ever read were the Mri books – would love that too 🙂
Heck – just keep writing! They’re all good.
So, you got Richard III in your line? They’re so sure they’ve found grampa they’re fighting over where and how to reinter the bones! I know I’ve got Edmund, First Duke of York, whose family was obviously on one side, but not sure about Richard.

Oh my. My reading year revolves around waiting for the next Foreigner book. But really, I’d be happy with anything you want to write. I can’t imagine the stories waiting to get out!
The first books I read of yours was the Faded Sun trilogy (I always want to say The Faded Sun set, but that just sounds wrong). I have a picture somewhere of my on the sofa, two siamese cats stretched out on me, and one of the three books in hand.
They’ve all been wonderful. Thank you.
Anything with spaceships. Or lions. 😉 Anything in the Union-Alliance universe. Actually you have so much good stuff I’d be happy with just about anything; any series that already has three books should be good for sales.
There will be a Foreigner arc after this one, but this one ties up some interesting bits, for sure, stuff that’s been hanging there waiting from me to solve it since the attack on Bren at Kajiminda.
Mmmm, re the genetics thing, I finally got to figuring out who in my paternal line is responsible for loading it with so many people with really long genealogies… I haven’t gotten to the Bollings yet, who are also suspect and prolific to the max, but the Uptons and the Strodes are really interesting—the Strodes have enough backstory to populate a tv miniseries, if you like intrigue, conspiracy, and political upheaval—and, boy! did they keep records! There must be a hundred surnames connected to them. I suspected the Boones had brought in some of the ‘name’ players—because they also go back a bit—but I finally sat down and wrote out which family names are connected to which fairly recent grandfathers, and it’s the relations to the Strodes and Uptons that open Pandora’s box of Really Interesting Pirates. I haven’t run into any Uptons yet, but Strodes have indeed turned up in my Ancestry DNA test—and since my Strode was married to Ms. Upton, I’m pretty sure about them, too. It can get to look like all one confusing ball of yarn until you realize that there are 8 colors of yarn in there, and figuring who’s related to whom is a riot. I have now gotten through half of two of my major yarns…and some questions are getting answered. Ha! I love puzzles, and this one is a doozy!
Sounds like your own ancestors would make a heck of a series. 🙂
I’ve always wanted to know more about the iduve. I know, going back quite a way here, but they fascinated me.
….my two cents – another Morgaine/Vanye book! (Do I sound like a broken record?) Then another Fortress book, perhaps a sequel to Reseune, and then, who knows?
Actually anything at all is a joy. But I bought Ivrel right after it came out and I so loved the whole Morgaine series — they were the ones I always shared to introduce you to folks. But heck more Alliance/Union would be fabulous too. Or something totally new waiting to break out would be grand!
I’d love to see more Morgaine! Too bad there isn’t democracy in the creative process. It’s either brewing or it isn’t.
I’m still early in the Foreigner series, so there will be plenty to read there. 🙂
I would always love another Chanur saga book. While I’d love to see more of the fascinating and lively hani, I’m also love to know more about the mahendo’sat, stsho, kit, knnn, t’ca, chi, and what those pesky humans are up to, because all of them are going to be restless and troublesome. There’s still so much story there.
I’d love more in the Alliance-Union universe too. The various merchanters, always independent, always have a story.
Other series or singles revisited? Something brand new?
But I’d enjoy whatever new book you have in mind.
How about an utter departure or back to the Tree? For instance: tourist hears crying in the night, goes down to the creek and comforts the woman washing the bloody clothing; tourist business in that part of Ireland is totally ruined… And where’s Kaith been?
Rachel, the Finisterre books were also my first Cherryh books! I’d love to see a sequel. BTW, why has my Avatar stopped working? I checked at en.gravatar.com and it’s still there.
As you were … I’ve restored my Avatar. I had changed my email address here without updating it at en.gravatar.com, which I’ve now done.
I would enjoy more Morgaine. I also wonder what else might happen after Cuckoo’s Egg.
Separately, I haven’t read much fantasy lately, so it’s about time. Warriors, wizards, critters, faerie folk, or what about the villager or farmer, or slaves or junior sorts or thieves running around? Surely something happens out of the ordinary. Though there’s nothing wrong with being regular town or country folk when the weird is afoot.
There was a short you did for an anthology I believe was titled Swords and Dark Magic. That and several others in it were quite good. Maybe something’s brewing?
Though I lean more toward SF, i also like fantasy and other things, and any good yarn is worth a read, whatever genre.
How ’bout a Western, or ancient/classical Europe, or earlier, or other historical period? Cavemen, ape-men?
Another story where the aliens are central, one or more species, with or without humans?
What about an anthology of short stories? New novellas as a bundle? I know you prefer the elbow room of a full size or longer novel.
A graphic novel? Or a novel with one or two illustrations per chapter, like fine old books or magazine serials? …Hmm… Serialized novels have done well for amateur web authors. Might be worth another experiment at Closed Circle? I’d like to see more of Seeking North too. Another collab shared world with you and Jane and Lynn, or other writer friends who are compatible and simpatico?
One of the hallmarks of a Cherryh story has always been that it turns something, characters and plot both, usually, on it’s ear, with strong characters, vivid worlds, and often something central with hero or society as alien.
Well I for one would be very pleased to read more about Ari and co, after all one is expecting a third – we can’t have just two novels, so infelicitous! but I can’t imagine your publisher allowing you to stop writing Foreigner episodes. 😀
Write what makes you happy and you’ll make us happy too 🙂
As I have said before, since you do the work, do what you like and can sell. While I would like to read of Pyanfar stepping onto Downbelow Station or meeting Ari it is up to our intrepid author.
I’m with Eridani and Nosen — I will largely be pleased with whatever you choose to write which, one hopes, will sell like hotcakes!
I spent the last 3 days painting the kitchen cabinets and have paint all over my person. One gallon was barely sufficient; I was almost licking the bottom of the can, but by Ghu, it’s done! Time for a break with the bookshelves…
