Just down loaded the first release of my tax program for 2010 and have started to shove in some estimated numbers to see what Jan 15th will bring in the way of estimated withholding payments.
Back from my business trip. I had meant to try to get in touch with associates in the metro DC area but got side tracked by extremely late scheduled arrival, and late work days.
I’ve been geeking out all day about HBO’s Game of Thrones stills that EW released today. First proper shots for the characters and everyone looks great. Having one of those nothings-gonna-to-get-me-down days because of it. I’m so excited.
Also, I bought some prints by an Australian artist named Jeremy Geddes who does hyper-real scifi-ish oil paintings and the framing is finally done and I get to pick them up tomorrow. If you have a spacesuit kink he’s your guy.
@chakaal: oh no-o-o . How awful for you. Too much stress in your life will do that. Did you get a shingles vaccine beforehand? It will minimise the effects.
For everyone who’s ever had chicken pox consider getting the vaccination, particularly if you’re starting to creep up in years. You already have the virus dormant in your body; it just waits around looking for an opportunity to raise its ugly little head.
I’m afraid not, they don’t generally give it to people under 60. I thought I had some kind of contact allergy at first. Had to get the eyes checked since the outbreak was right above my left eye.
So far it is not a really bad case, but it is certainly having its effect.
But yes, if you can get vaccinated I would certainly do it. I’m not sure if Doctors will give it to under-60s since that’s the group it was tested in.
Apologize for just posting links. But they should cover what I have been up to. Been working 12+ hour days and this is my first one off. You are not forgotten C.J…
That looks like a request for Someone, Anyone, come out of lurk mode.
I certainly can’t speak for Everyone, but I’ve been reading. (Sanderson & Donaldson, most recently). I’ve been trying to identify the most important chemical compounds in the solar system. (The most important compounds aren’t obvious from a list of just the most important elements), and I’ve been trying to create a science-fictional prehistoric tribal society. I had a different answer last week and will probably have a different one next week.
There seems to be no obvious intersection of my particular current interests with yard work, art work, ice skating, care of critters, or Winter Enjoyment. As much as I like to *read* SF&F, and as much as I like various exercises in worldbuilding, I’ve set aside my daydreams of *writing* the Best SF Novel Ever.
I figure your life is hectic enough without my comments competing for your attention. If I have nothing intelligent to say, why advertise the fact to the whole world?
(Retreating into lurk mode)
It’s so good to hear from you guys again! To those of you having a rough time right now, may it smooth out very soon—we’ve missed you. To those of you in the midst of life changes, may things turn out well for you. And for those of you just hanging in and hanging out, it’s nice for my part just to pop in from a day at the keyboard and pick up positive vibrations of life from the internet. We live so shut in most of the time! sometimes we lose track of things.
We’ve mostly just been trucking along ourselves, trying to get some sort of good energy going, and resuming skating is helping. We’re looking to a winter snowier than usual—lots of shoveling and snow-blowing; but we’ve mostly got the yard under control. Now I have to start on the indoor fish tank!
CJ , I notice that the progesso’meter is at 86% & Amazon is already pre-sales on it . I’d think someone is jumping the gun here . Also please review email from babydr . Something not correct about the items I mention in htat email .
That’s the book that’s already in that you haven’t seen yet. This is yet another one!
And yep, that’s the scam I’ve tried to get off Amazon to no avail: it’s a collection of wiki articles, sold to anybody who falls for it, and Amazon won’t blow these crooks off the site.
Sometimes I just see red. But there’s nothing I can do about it.
Now retired and been in France for a couple of months without internet access! In fact we hit the road on retirement and have only been at home for one week in the last thirteen. We’re enjoying ourselves at the moment.
Wish my life would give me some room. Currently battling my grandmother’s poor health and wondering how I’ll get anything accomplished in the mountain-o’-stuff-that-all-needs-doing. Almost think she’d be better going in the hospital pre- Thanksgiving, despite chaos of same.
Tired and frazzled personally. But that is normal, lately.
Tried the ricotta cream recipe, will adjust sugar or vanilla extract for large batch. But this was a hit for us! Easy and tastes good and good ingredients.
Cats are due for shots, almost grown kitty is due for neutering ( my total sympathies, li’l guy, but it’s better that the urge to spray, fight, and roam in search of, ah, sleepover with a young lady feline…though he may prefer a young male, given current evidence, unless that’s just lack of opportunity. Yes, this happens. Both cats are awesome, funny, and sweet. — Though how I’ll ever integrate her ever-on-guard bruiser male with my two, I know not yet.
Can’t ever find time to read lately. Foreigner 1 sits in wait, and an umpteenth tetras of the Chanur saga (at 2nd book) also sits waiting.
I do occasionally watch a backlog of tv or movies, might get to watch one or two this weekend. Glee plus several scifi, fantasy, or anime. SGU, WH13, Dr. Who, plus awaiting the return of Primeval.
You got me hooked on Bleach, btw, though just what the appeal is, is hard to pin down. Gradually watching Saiyuki too, which is very strange in wandering plot, IMHO, yet somehow engaging.
Avoiding techno-lust for an iPad, hoping to get a newer model when it comes out.
I had a spate of creativity towards story ideas this week, amid all the real life wackiness. One of those appears to be coalescing from at least two older ideas. That’s been very satisfying, as I was starting to think my writing had gone dormant. It’s just been overwhelmed and needed to recharge and regroup. So good there.
But another…I like, but I don’t yet know if it will see the outside of my drafts folder. I can’t yet figure out if it is fine or a mess, in terms of what’s going on, how the plot connects. There is one scene that gets explicit, very unusual for my personal writing guidelines, and that is giving me trouble, because it defines part of the two main char’s relationship, but my more conservative side is having trouble with whether a love scene belongs in there. Half of me says I’m being a pride, it belongs in, and the other half says that is too much, find another way. I haven’t yet resolved it, so it’s in the rough draft. — I’ve written poems and short stories, and other than that, lots of odds and ends and even a few chapters of various stories, but too few finished. I get many, many ideas, but so far, too few completed.
I’m writing. The WIP seems to be finally taking off (at 90K) and I’m starting to panic that it’s just going to be one endless middle, with no climax in sight (middle volume of trilogy) so that’s been on my mind a lot.
Also, been doing gardening which I still have the chance – my grass needs cutting (I let it grow over the summer, so now is the time to take it down), I’ve planted a number of acers – I can’t help it. I like acers. Everybody helpfully tells me that they can be trimmed so they don’t engulf my garden. I got a two-for-one deal, then I wanted another… and Westonbirt was selling potluck acers for £3 each (‘we have no idea what these will grow into, but they’re fine young trees’), so, ahem, there’s another three planted now. Ooops.
And there’s the stack of spring bulbs that really ought to go into the ground.
Oh, and there’s this ‘work’ thing that I need to do more of. (People pay me to read [and, well, copy edit] books? There are days I am still finding that somewhat difficult to believe…)
Just got word that the third volume in the Paksenarrion series in on the way – I look forward to listening to it then finally I can listen to the new book by Ms. Moon. I have been converting many books to MP3 format for listening to in the car.

Job hunting. Hooray for being a new grad in the worst job market since the great depression.
Waiting for a dry day – not complaining, we need the rain! – so I can rake more leaves, getting ready for Thanksgiving guests, wishing I was camping…
Congratulations, NWSmith! Best wishes to you!
Wrapping things up at work before taking Thanksgiving Week off.
Final year of the PhD. Too much data to analyze (and spell in the UK way, “analyse”), too little time.
Still reading, just not commenting / blogging as much.
Glad to know that you’re still going & well.

I hardly have enough energy to put a coherent thought together while I am online, so I mostly lurk around here.
Today: worked a full day, came home to beat my head on the wall trying to potty train my toddler, and sorted nuts for the Girl Scout fall fundraiser.
Time to crack open a can of “deluxe mixed nuts” in front of This Old House.

Dealing with 6 weeks of personal crisis, travel (part worky part vacationy), dealing with responsibilities and finally coming down with shingles…

I hope they gave you an antiviral. It helps.
(I had shingles last year. Do. Not. Want.)

Bless you, Xen, I find it (a) interesting and (b) understandable! Get some sleep! And a long shower!

In between waiting for something to happen noteworthy enough to warrant writing a blog entry, I’ve been listening to Joe Haldeman’s Forever War again.

’nuff said.

Doctor Who! Did you see that the Children In Need clip is up on youtube along with a long trailer for the Christmas Special? Very exciting stuff.
Reading lots…..sorry
