From Warrior of Worry: “I have a limited number of spaces for additional fans of your work. They could email me here (warriorofworry[at]yahoo[dot]com) if interested in joining us.
The BBQ will be on Thursday afternoon at “Chez My Sister’s” (overlooking Lincoln Park Zoo/Lake Michigan), and we’ll meet at the hotel at 1:45 to carpool/cab over.”
ON THE POND FRONT: The little sparrows have come back to the yard, the ravens are calmer in their trees, and we think our problem may have decided to go make an honest living over at Latah Creek.
What we did: we got some 6′ metal tent stakes with just a hook at the top, we got some 50 lb test line, and we strung it low to the ground, hammered in all the way, across his typical flight path, with some diagonals. It’s mostly invisible. But shouldn’t be so to him…eagles having 2 focal spots in the eye, and the ability to switch between–equivalent to having long vision plus an inbuilt binocular vision that brings things close and sharp. They have at least 4x the acuity of sight we do. So I think he’s seen those lines and knows they’re there. And he’s gone off to earn a living. We hope.
Fingers crossed that the stoopid iggle has wised up and gone elsewhere. (I keep having this persistent mental image of a chibi Jane peering anxiously into the pond and counting, and a chibi CJ standing on the bridge threatening to swat an eagle over the left field fence with the business end of a broom.) How is the quarantined koi with the head wound doing?
Heh. “And she held the broom like a Samurai Warrior.” misquoting Bill Cosby.
I sorely wish I could attend the BBQ; shoots, I wish I could attend Worldcon or one of the other big cons. Not where I live, though.
I’ve noticed a new feature of the comment page today; after about a week, the threads are marked ‘comments are closed’. It isn’t universal, because older threads like the genealogy page still allow addons. Is that something you and Jane (or the software) are instituting on the general Wave page as a rule, or are you doing it on a case by case basis? I’d hate to think anything I said made you feel the thread should be locked.
Alas, poor Ari…she’s comfy enough, we think, but we’ve given her all the meds we dare, and right now are just providing clean water, minimal activity, and food, and hope that the wound will close. It’s so large, it’s going to be difficult, but she still has a chance.
Don’t know if Ari is into duckweed, but I’ve found that if I have an injury in one of the ponds where the fish have learned about duckweed-candy, giving them regular duckweed treats really keeps them involved with eating and healing. Of course, it could be my imagination….
I have duckweed growing on all of my outdoor livefood culture tubs (mostly daphnia and moina) so I have lots of goodies readily available.
So far I’ve not had to get into any drugs ‘harder’ than salt baths, and that healed the dorsal wound on one of my sarassas after a Great Blue Heron encounter. That and duckweed-yumminess….
Some of the older threads were just continuing in ways that I couldn’t monitor with argument brewing, so I put a 4 day limit on response. But I can take it off…there. That should have done it.

We had a wonderful time at Chez Sister’s! Great food, fascinating conversation. It was a great beginning to WorldCon. Thank you for sharing this – and if other Cherryh fans are here, please come by the Spokane in 2015 parties.
Yay! Hugs to all!
