A witty, sincerely nice guy. I’ve seen him get overloaded by a concom that should have known a writer needs, like, time to eat—and never a complaint. He’d do it. He was genuinely a fan as well as a heck of a writer and thinker.

Oh my … I was a great fan of his.
I think it has been years since I read his stories, but I’ll be getting a copy of the Space Merchants and at least the first Gateway book in pb, as these seem only available in audiobooks and not ebooks currently. I remember we had both, and Heechee Rendezvous, at least, in our home library, but I think they were missed during a prior move or water damage.
He left material for several more blog posts, I understand. Dead and still posting?
I am sorry that you have lost your friend. That hollow feeling is always hard to endure.
Baen publishes many of Pohl’s books as ebooks, though not Gateway or Space Merchants. (Also a bit from CJ.) Don’t miss the link in the Guardian article to Pohl’s blog.
Who could forget The Space Merchants, Gateway. I always enjoyed his autobiography The Way The Future Was. He Will be missed.
Growing up in the 50s I loved Fred Pohl, especially the short stories. I loved The Space Merchants, Gladiator At Law, Tunnel Under The World.
I also loved Galaxy magazine and only later realized Pohl was the editor.
