You buy these the regular way but tell me how you’d like them signed, and be sure to give your shipping addy, because of course I have to mail them to you. There is a postage charge: sorry. It’s that physical-book thing.
There is of course no charge for autographing an actual book. That’s an old tradition in our field and I maintain it.
I do offer autographed bookplates for 2.00 each, postage free, since the price covers my buying and shipping the bookplates. And Jane can sign those too, if you would like a plate in one of her books.
CJ, about formatting of comments, as was recently discussed on the Foreigner thread. I’m the one who suggested the WordPress plugin for the Preview button.
I’ve now done some more searching and testing, and I’ve found a good little plugin which adds a simple WYSIWYG editor for comments, which you may be interested in.
It’s here:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-nicedit/
I’ve tested it and it works well. You can see what the editor looks like and try the demo on the NicEdit site.
To install, just unzip it and put it in the Plugins directory in the normal way. It will add a settings page in the Admin panel which allows you to choose between the full set of editing icons and a reduced set. The reduced set is better, because the fancier ones are unnecessary and only add confusion for users. It’s better to keep it simple.
You may also want to customize exactly which editing buttons appear. Numbered and bulleted lists don’t work in a WordPress context, and ‘Font Format’ is confusing and not necessary.
It’s fairly easy to customize exactly which buttons appear on the editor and in what order. If you want to do this, let me know.
NB: NicEdit doesn’t work together with the Preview button. Once the NicEdit plugin is installed, the Preview button will stop working. On the other hand, since it’s a WYSIWYG editor you don’t really need the Preview any more. So you could just disable the Preview plugin to remove the button.
Ah, bless you, GreenWyvern. When I get a spare neuron today or tomorrow, I will give that a go.
Off topic: Jerry Pournelle just said that he was thinking of moving to wordpress, and based on that discussion, I decided to replace my old View from England blog with a new site, too. So you’re an opinion leader!
Lol! Well, felicitations to you and to him. We tried creating our own via Joomla! and decided that WP was a lot more user-friendly. Occasionally we bump up against the limitations of a given theme format, but I’ll heartily recommend Atahualpa or Constructor as two very manageable ones: Atahualpa’s tabs make locating the code you want to tweak very simple, and very correctable.
I’m using Joomla! for Vision: A Resource for Writers, A Conspiracy of Authors (ACOA publishing), a special site I’m setting up for my science ficiton universe and . . . something else that escapes me at the moment. LOL. I love working with it, but I will not be moving my Joyously Prolific blog or or Zette’s Picture a Day Blog away from the blogger format. I have looked at WordPress, but at this point it would be an additional site rather than an ‘instead of’ site, and I really don’t think I need one of those. LOL
(Oh and the LiveJournal. Yeah, it’s there somwhere. Plus all the regular websites. Ack.)
Oh wow! I’ve bookmarked your new blog, herwin, and found the old blog interesting. Hadn’t been there before. I also found your uni page interesting for the biomech and pure computer science. (Must remember to check that C++ string lecture, to absorb whatever I can from it.)
GreenWyvern, thank you very much for that link. Copying it down for later. I intend to look over WordPress, so I can learn how to use it. Either this month or next, I intend to add a forum and possibly a WordPress blog to my site ( http://www.shinyfiction.com/ ) mostly for experience and feedback. My webhost offers a different forum than I’ve admin’ed, but I’ll figure that out.
— I’m going to look at Closed Circle, in case of a couple of books I don’t have. I’m looking forward to the Chernevog/Yvgenie trilogy appearing as ebooks, since I wasn’t smart enough to get them when they first appeared in pb. I would dearly love to see CJ’s Visible Light and collected shorts in ebook. I’d be ecstatic about the Chanur books in ebook form. 🙂 Heck, I don’t want much, do I? — Also, Lynn had mentioned her next up are the “Orion’s Children / … Time” books, which I haven’t read and which sound good. Evidently, I’m in need of some good fantasy. (Time to pull out the Faery In… books, which I haven’t read yet.) …And the last time I picked up a printed book was over a month ago, Foreigner 2: Invader, which I intend to read in this weekend.
I’m gnawing my way through what’s available (Chanur, atevi) from my library system, and am enjoying the heck out of watching Cajeiri grow into his heritage. He is definitely his father’s son, and the leavening from Tutu and Bren adds an interesting admixture!
I like Atahualpa. Do I have to enable anything to let people post comments?
OK, figured it out. Only registered users can post comments and first comments will be moderated.
You got it. You can enlarge the avatars a bit (tab) and you can also install an app called Akismet to stop spam (and those of your members who happen to offend the touchy thing.) GreenWyvern has some really helpful apps too. The one that requires you to spell out something to join is Si Captcha, and has really cut down on spammers.
The Captcha wasn’t from me, but I’m glad it’s working! One great advantage of WordPress is that there are thousands of free plugins available. Another is that there are about 25 million active WordPress sites, so if you want to find out how to do anything or solve any problem, a Google search will usually bring up plenty of information.
Completely off subject, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your avatar! 😀
😀
Many thanks!
Like Sam, I’ve always wanted to meet elves!
I’m glad that everything seems to be going smoothly again for both of you, after various crises. (Though perhaps there may be things that you don’t choose to blog about.)
I’m in Cape Town, South Africa, by the way. So it’s winter down here – cool and rainy. But there are always a couple of sunny days a week, when its pleasant to walk along the beach.
How do you generate the tags on the right side?
It’s part of ‘widgets’ and it’s an app called tag cloud.

YOu have 2 categories of add-on, one called ‘widgets’ and one called ‘plug-ins.’ Be sure when you install that the new app is ‘compatible’ with the theme you’re using. Some aren’t. Search ‘widgets’ and ‘plugins’ separately, just by telling what kind of function you’re looking for.
I’m using Atahualpa. How do you limit the width of the tag cloud?
See http://crowan-scat.sunderland.ac.uk/~harryerw/wordpress/ for the problem (on the right).
I’m not sure I see a problem. It takes the width of the sidebar, and you can define the width of the sidebar. Looks to be the same as mine, perhaps a little neater, in fact. Can you be more specific as to the size problem?
The separator between tags defaults to nothing. Better Tag Cloud allows me to set it to a space, which works.
Ah, good!
