I wonder what Sable will do with the interior monologue that is so important in these books.
Purplejulian: Interior monologues will be handled in a couple of different ways. All under the watchful eye of Ms. Cherryh. The script will not be recorded without her complete approval.
I am sure it will be wonderful, I was being curious!
I (and I’m sure CJ) encourage curiosity. The more curious and the more you all ask questions the happier I am. It keeps me on my toes and totally focusing on giving what CJ and her fans want of this. So please, continue to ask and wonder! I love it.
If there is any way that we can assist please let the Wavy Navy know. I’m not just talking about Kick Starting the funding, but also production assistance. or any other tasks that come about so that we can say WE PARTICIPATED!
ready4more: we’re located (for the recording) in Seattle, but the sound designer and production house is in California. But believe me, don’t be surprised if we throw a “help!” rope out!
Awesome announcement, definitely will be contributing to the Kickstarter campaign when it starts.
Oh this sounds wonderful! One of the best things I ever bought was the BBC dramatized version of the Lord of the Rings – so much fun to listen to, and to have something like that done with Foreigner? I can’t wait.
Fantastic news! Here’s another person waiting to do his bit. I have recordings of several BBC radio dramas and to add a CJ series to the list would be awesome.
Seriously cool, will definitely contribute to the Kickstarter campaign once it gets going.
After that I will only hold my thumbs for rights management to let me get hold of the play once it’s out there.
Sadly I’m not that optimistic.
Busifer, never say never.
I wonder will it be available in the UK? I do really really hope so, and I am sure Busifer will be able to get hold of it if it is. 😀
I can’t see that it would be unavailable anywhere!
Fantastic, wonderful news. A good audio drama is really super. Looking forward to this. Also looking forward to the Kickstarter launch.
On that: the 99% Invisible podcast, about design an the unusual, is really worth a listen. The host and producer is Roman Mars. (Yes, really.) he recently tried Kickstarter for funding, and was bowled over by the successful results. This could work for a Foreigner audio drama.
I’m a faithful subscriber (free) of two audio drama podcasts: Star Trek: Outpost and Star Trek: Excelsior. They have music, sound effects, voice actors (amateurs who sound like pros)’ the works.
An idea: tell the nice Browncoats over at The Signal Podcast (Firefly/Serenity fandom). They include scifi news of interest to fans, so it might help the Kickstarter, or the project in other ways. Yes, tell the Outpost and Excelsior folks to. Their fans and crew like good scifi books and audio.
…Heck, I’ll be visiting those forums during the week, I’ll put in a good word.
bluecatship: email us particulars for contact at foreigneraudio@gmail.com
Hi Sable 🙂 . When I’m at my laptop tomorrow, I’ll send you the info and cc to CJ. — You know, io9 might also help y’all get the word out.
Omigosh! There’s a cart full of new Foreigner audiobooks at Audible.com, the third trilogy and up.
Hello everyone, Sable Jak here (working on the project)
Here are some very quick facts:
1. No production will happen without the script being approved by CJ.
2. CJ has approval over the voices used for the main characters (actually she has approval on all the voices)
3. This will have a full cast, full soundscape and original music.
4. The Kickstarter campaign… we’d love to throw something up there as of yesterday but we’re lining up our premiums because, like the atevi, we want to give you quality items that will not be available outside the campaign.
5. I realize some of you (probably all of you) want to hear the demo now. Let’s hold off on that for the moment, okay? The sound designer and I are both very pleased with it, but, there are parts of it that we would do differently. Also, there are a couple of scenes in there that are not in the book. They were created so that CJ could hear what kinds of sound effects we could do. And, on that basis we wouldn’t want to have people get upset.
6. The script will follow the book exactly. We are not cutting scenes or adding new scenes (except for one or two with CJ’s okay). It will run about 6 hours, maybe a little more. We will use all of CJ’s dialog. We are adding dialog and monologues to convey Bren’s inner thoughts and other scenes. These will all have CJ’s stamp of approval or will be redone until we get that stamp.
I’ll add more information here as we go along.
Let me correct that statement about adding scenes, there is action that is happening that has no dialog, but it has to be conveyed. Therefore we “add” something to have that happen.
It’s my hope that you can sit there with the book and follow the story, just like people do with music when they go to the symphony.
*bounces up and down* Can’t hardly wait! Cajeiri couldn’t be more impatient, and one does NOT have the benefit of Ilisidi to remind one to ‘Behave!’
Sable and CJ — Please see your inboxes. Potential ways to get the word out. 🙂
no, we are all, I am sure, quite happy to wait until it’s all done and perfect, and then we will be so excited – deferred gratification is fine! 😀 thanks for telling us so much about it all.
will this be something we can buy as an audio download, or on cds?
Download, of course! CDs…. thinking on that. More inclined to go with thumb drives (flash drives or the name du jour) One of the premiums we’re looking at for the Kickstarter campaign are thumb drives in the shape of: scrolls, Ilisidi’s cane… and so on. Of course we’ll be running any designs past CJ first.
Oh I hope CDs will be an option. I’d certainly be willing to pay what’s necessary for burn-on-demand and the shipping). Just because my computer speakers are okay but something like this deserves to be heard through the really good speakers which are hooked up to the CD/DVD set-up in a different room. (And yes, I know I could burn my own but I do love having “official” CD containers/boxes of favourite radio dramas on my shelves … very pleasing to the eye in the same way that the spines of beloved books are)
Radio Drama is wonderful. I did not get to meet CJ at Fencon. I just wasn’t up to the 2 hour drive to Dallas. I will look for the 2 Star Trek pod casts. Hey people….wouldn’t it be FANtastic to have the whole series. Might even provoke a screen play or two.

nchaney:
Screenplays would be wonderful, I’d love to see that myself, but, keep in mind, with a screenplay they have to condense everything down to one and a half hour (mostly) sometimes longer like with Lord of the Rings. The other problem with movies is that quite often the story is taken out of the hands of the author and things get a little… well… crazy? As I’ve said before, with this production you should be yable to follow the story with the book in one hand and the earbuds in the other. Although, you don’t HAVE to listen to it with earbuds, you can just sit down on a chilly winter’s night, tuck in, turn off the lights and flip on your audio implement of choice!
I think the Chanur books would also work – if the stark naked fear factor can be properly expressed.
NosenDove:
Oh yes, that stark naked fear factor can be properly expressed with sound and acting. We hope to bring that to you with the Foreigner trilogy as there are plenty of moments like that!
If any of you are interested we’ve been posting some of the items we’re considering for Kickstarter premiums on the Foreigner blog so do travel on over there to check them out. The main premium, of course, will be the special exclusive Kickstarter edition of the program that won’t be available once the project is done.
Sable: Where is the Foreigner blog you mentioned here?
is this it? http://cjcherryhmovieinaudio.tumblr.com/tagged/sable-jak
yes indeedy!
thanks purplejulian !
Thanks purplejulian.
Sable: My son, who is currently in LA working for a production company, needed the info in case he has a break between projects. If necessary, I can bunk on the floor in his apartment if you need assistance. I retire from federal government at the end of December and will be available to work on the project either-on line or in the LA area. I’m an operations research analyst, with specialization in large database design, so call on me for computer based assistance.
ready4more:
Why, thank you very much. I’ll pass this information along to the guys in California, although they’re in Mission Vjejo (not sure how far from LA that is. In the Seattle area we’ll be doing the recording so I’m not sure what I’d do with a database design person! But, never say never!
Thanks again.
