…well, actually they’d been in his possession, and when he heard of plans for chiseling, he decided that wouldn’t do, no. So he and OSG spent all yesterday afternoon figuring out a bandsaw which OSGuy had tracked down, calling in a massive lot of favors, and they sawed our bridge arches for us. There are 2 sets of arches, a short pair and a long pair, and they were so tired when they were done—we took them out for Thai food last night. He still wouldn’t turn them over to us: he’s going to work them over with a belt sander, being the perfection sort of guy he is. Thank you, thank you, OSGuy and OSG!
The bridge across the Magnificent Pond is on its way to reality. Now we have to sand, prep, paint, and assemble it.
I love my belt sander.
Phil Brown
UPDATE: The arches currently reside in our garage. No sanding done yet.
well, they’re not out in the rain, and they’re essentially done, so we’re happy; sanding’s hard work even with a belt sander, so we’re cool with that ;). BTW—wind warning starting at 5 am tomorrow: small pet warning. Gusts to 60. Tie down Kate and Emily.
I actually managed not to gain 10 lbs at Lennie’s Thai. Didn’t lose any, but didn’t gain! And snoopy dance! the bridge supports live!
Emily & Kate now on belay with a stout rope! If you need an extra rope for Ysabel & Efanor we have one to loan.
For those of you from the southwest—who wonder why us nor’westerners are worried about a 60 mph wind, we’ve had a lot of rain, and in rock-studded, much lighter soil, with 50′ high small-rooted pine trees all about, it gets scary. Those big babies start waving in the wind and over they can go, taking out cars, house roofs, not to mention power lines. The combo of rain-saturated soil (and it’s rained going on 2 weeks) and wind above 30 mph, and you can lose trees, and your roof. We have four 50′ hemlocks along our thoroughfare, but these old fellows I know have roots under our fence and driveway and likely under the adjacent avenue (not to mention some under the pond), so they’re better anchored than some of their cousins.
CJ I have a question — how do retail book prices and discounts impact you ?? Is your amazon store the best place for us to buy (I don’t have a local small bookstore, just Borders).
Can you add Deceiver to your Amazon store pls ??
Sure! I get a little extra off such sales, which kinda helps prop up the profit off a heavily discounted book. I’ll put it up there.
@OSG – The problem is getting teh kittehs to *hold* the ropes, not just bat them around…
We had a power outage starting sometime during the day. Our power was restored at 8:30, about the time we were getting ready to light candles. Trees are down all over. Traffic lights were out.
OSGuy went up on the roof this evening to replace 4 shingles that were ripped off, so we escaped easily. A friend’s shed ripped off & took out their 2 vehicles this morning. Ouch.
It was wild around here, but our trees stand. It’s going to have taken all the pretty blooms on the trees hereabouts—our magnolia lost its just budding flowers. But nothing like yours. Did you see the photo online of the house that simply got squashed by a massive hemlock? It’s going to be hard to fix. It got the whole roof and part of the walls. Time to check the roof for shingles, for sure.
We had a huge wind storm here in Vegas on Friday. when I went out to mow my back lawn I found several shingles. Luckily they were from someone else’s roof. Mine was fine.
Gusts to 50mph here in Boise yesterday (5/3) afternoon, for over an hour. Took the roof off a local’s garage and smashed her car–which she and her two kids had just vacated. Shingles lying in streets, tin roofs out in the farm fields. Pretty spooky… lucky here at Chez Crowell, the shingle muster came up 100%, trees all present and accounted for.
OSG, some poor guy at the intersection of Wall and Country Homes had his car creamed by a falling tree. He’s ok. But it was a real good reason to stay home and off the roads during one of these blows.
