There is SO much oddness going on you can’t swat it all…
Oh, goodie, one more book biz lawsuit…

Blumenthal has a reputation for filing such lawsuits without a heck of a lot of basis, from what I’ve heard. Gets his name in the press.
Interesting. Not a field I follow as closely…should, perhaps, as regular as this is getting to be…
One commenter on the story mentioned that Blumenthal is running for the US Senate, and this is “free air time” for him.
Well, as far as I can see, this is the best reason to be able to buy directly from the authors/publishers here at CC. You might be charging the same price for certain books, but you certainly can’t call it “price fixing”, especially since it’s coming from a single publishing source, Closed Circle.
I’ve ordered the Sony Touch reader, read some of the reviews, so we’ll see if I’m lucky enough to get it before I leave for Camp Perry. Otherwise, it’ll be a week before I get it. 🙁
I’ve had the Touch for a year now. I hope you will be as happy with it as I have been. And be sure to check out the forums on MobileRead. They have a ton of stuff to download and a special forum just for the Sony Touch (prs-600).
Cap’n, thank you very much. I’ve registered and now on that forum. My forum name is “fuzznose”, and it has nothing to do with my mustache and beard, nor myself, as it stands.
🙂
Although I started out using Sony’s software, I found it clunky and unable to handle non-DRM stuff very well. Great if you’re following their business model and buy everything you read.
Since stuff on the net that is free comes in all kinds of formats I find the program calibre to be the most effective tool for managing my library. CJ recommends it as an ebook reader for PCs, and that works fine, too. But it works great for managing the Sony. Calibre has a forum on MobileRead I have found useful. I find the ePub format to be the best for Sony as well…YMMV.
Alas, I received an email from the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) a few minutes ago. They told me that the vendor told them that the Sony touch is no longer available. So, I hopped over to SonyUSA.com and ordered it there. Same price, but there’s that pesky Ohio sales tax at 7%. With orders to the Exchange, I don’t pay sales tax, because it’s one of the benefits of being retired military. (There are other benefits, but they’re so secret, I have blanked them from my mind….). Anyway, I ordered it in silver, which was the color I wanted originally, but the Exchange had only red.
well, at least you got the color you want.
Yes, I did, thank you. I’m also taking CapnKirk’s suggestions to heart. I didn’t know the Sony had problems with non-DRM files. I didn’t see anything in their specifications that would have led me to that conclusion. Thanks again to the good Cap’n.
Sony just notified me that the reader will ship out tonight. I won’t be here when it arrives, but it will be tucked into my house safely when my father comes to feed the 3 furry ones.
FedEx left the package at my door this afternoon. Whooie! I’m going off to Camp Perry (OH) to help out with the National High Power Rifle Championships, and the reader will give me something to play with during my down time.
Enjoy, Joe! Between us and Project Gutenberg, you should be able to collect some stuff to play with.
There is a bunch of good (free) stuff at the Baen Books Free Library, too. Unfortunately right now there seems to be a server glitch going on, so that I keep getting BAD HOST NAME when I try to go there.
Have fun with your new toy. A library in your pocket is really rice. Well, almost in your pocket, anyway. Treat the screen like a delicate thing, though.
I’m a great fan of Baen.
And Baen’s not-free stuff is reasonably priced. Notice that the books from Baen, PG, Closed Circle, and a few other places are 100% DRM-free. Sony’s own store is mostly (perhaps completely) DRMed. Choose wisely.
