1) You know I turned Protector in yesterday.
2) We have audiobook contracts for Cyteen, Downbelow Station, Foreigner, and Chanur with audible.com. If you buy from these links, I get a dollar. I’ll put them in the first comment box, because the program strips code from the initial post, and I haven’t gotten in to fix that undocumented feature yet. The Cyteen production is first rate: I have high hopes for the others.
3) I’m working on the next after Protector.
4) Lynn Abbey’s got her Orion’s Children books up on Closed Circle.
5) Jane’s now preparing to put out ‘Netwalkers.

These are professionally produced, beautifully read, unabridged—there are 5 sections, averaging about 7 and a half hours per section, so you get a lot of car-trip listening.
I’ve had in mind to try recording the hani and other alien speech in the Chanur books, especially all that flying com chatter in the Battle For Anuurn. How the narrator is going to get through that should be a real challenge, even with pronunciation guidance. Greatly looking forward to these.
Aarrgh, I bought the Cyteen audio book earlier this month. If I would’ve waiting, I could’ve bought from your link to put an extra dollar in the cookie jar. (Gfi jar?)
It will be great to see the others. — Quite happy to get the Orion’s Children books; the blurbs sounded good, and I didn’t see them in the stores back when they were in PB. — The three Russian novels, I haven’t read, and now the mythology and story of how they were written sounds like they will be great reads. — Jane’s been working a lot to get ebooks and art done, and on her own writing. It’ll be good to see Netwalkers.
…Think I’m going to have to put a spare copy of the Chanur Saga (first three books in one) on my desk to remind me to try recording it. I want to see how I do on the speech.
I think for the multi-layered t’ca communications, you would need a full chorus, with one voice for each column/row!
Or mix directly 4 each New Age, Heavy Metal, and Pink Floyd tracks?
The t’ca are composed and conducted by Philip Glass 😀
Ooooooh. Now I want to try my hand at it! *opens up audacity, readies microphone*
There’s a nifty thing out there called Auditorium (I can post the link if anyone wants it, but I’ll wait for an invitation). In essence, it is a relatively simple puzzle game – you have “streams” of light which when redirected over certain spots on the game field, create “streams” of sound. Successfully activate all the sound-spots to complete the level.
Made me think of alien singing 🙂
There will be a slight delay. It seems where I had my extra PB copy of Chanur was instead where I had my extras of Finity’s End and Downbelow Station. Yes, they are out of place because I need to get a bookshelf up. This means  I think I have 3 PB copies of Finity’s End somehow. I know I have a spare of Chanur. (Gosh, couldn’t everyone use a spare Chanur now and again?)
At any rate, I’ll continue looking, hope to find it this weekend and get everything Cherryh together, as it once was.
Meanwhile, I have Finity’s End right here and I think I’ll test my audio setup with it.
Please Note:
1. I can’t post any test audio recordings of Finity’s End without permission. I definitely can’t post the whole book, *IF* I were to record it, without permission. (I will not post it without permission, period. It would be wrong.)
2. I’m not sure I can post recordings of the alien dialogue in Chanur, either, come to think of it. It would require permission. If that is done not-for-profit, strictly for fan enjoyment, it might be possible. Given that Ms. Cherryh has a contract (or pending) for audio of Chanur through Audible, it could affect that contract. I don’t know.
That said, I need to see what Audible’s process is for hiring readers, and whether they would accept submissions on spec. Any recording of a work under current copyright would require permission and agreement between the *author* and Audible, of that, I’m sure.
I’m going to email a copy of this to CJC, so she has a written record of it.
Folks, this is to forestall either undue anticipation or disappointment by fellow fans, and questions of, “When will you post any?” Thinking it over, I don’t want to put myself or CJC in a spot.
I would like to record the alien dialogue in Chanur, for fun, and it would be nice to make that available for fans’ enjoyment. But I don’t want to cause a Situation for her.
I’d like to do test audio for Finity’s End, and if it goes well, I’d consider recording the book, but that cannot be posted without satisfying CJC and her contracted obligations.
About Finity’s End: Even test audio, that is, brief passages or excerpts, would reasonably require permission, and I don’t know if it’s doable.
I feel like I’ve opened up a can of worms without intending to create a problem, and so I’m presenting it to CJC with apologies for any headaches. My intentions are not to cause a problem, but for there to be something fun for her and the fans and myself. If it’s possible that some could be done solely for fun, not for profit, good.
I don’t have any idea about the possibility of recording a book. There are so many IF’s there, I don’t know how those would be resolved, except to say that CJC has any rights to any profits from sales, and she has the rights of permission or refusal on publishing in audio, I would expect. So, fellow fans, don’t expect that to happen just because I opened my mouth without thinking enough. I would be glad to have the opportunity to record something, but as yet, no expectation that will happen.
Maybe I’m overcomplicating something simple, but I don’t want to impede CJC any, just because a fan like me has fannish enthusiasm. Don’t count your dragon’s eggs before they’re hatched? 😉 (Hmm, no, do count ’em, and keep a safe distance about it, but they’re eggs until they’re dragons.)

The official word is no on doing recordings, because this would affect contractual obligations with Audible. I can see why. Herself says I could record a take of the knnn sequence and tc’a matrix-speech only, for fan enjoyment and not for profit, then that would be possible, but others, either excerpts or whole works, no. Hah, in my read-through of the books, I’ll need to make notes of *where* the various alien dialogue spots are, so it won’t be immediate anyway. I understand and don’t want to screw up things for her and Audible, so that’s where we stand. Sorry to get anyone too excited.
Critical question on the bread recipe — what size loaf does it make? 2-lb?
2 lb. That breadmaker has recipes: one direction in the booklet is the machine manual, and the other direction is recipes. The one I gave you is (with a very few modifications, the Italian bread recipe, so you can get the real version there. And the pizza dough recipe (later in the booklet) is also the one I use. Very good pizza dough. Put the bread on at 1 to be ready at 5, and put the pizza dough on at 3 to be ready around 4:30, so you can flatten it out and put the ingredients on. I don’t think they tell you, but use olive oil, use a large pizza stone if you’ve got it (never preheat the stone: and use a pizza peel, big flat paddle, to get it in and out of the oven safely) —and it takes 20 minutes at 425 degrees to bake a pizza. Coat the pizza in red sauce (I use Classico spinach and cheese spaghetti sauce) and cover it in pepperoni or other good stuff. Layer mozzarella over that. Then sprinkle with dried basil and oregano. That’s my personal way of doing it. Put into 425 preheated oven and wait. Serves 4 all they can eat.
Great! Thanks. I did find the recipes and the Rosemary bread was what I tried for the first loaf (minus the rosemary because I didn’t have any) as I didn’t have any butter (just margarine). I got some wheat gluten so I can use whole wheat flour, and did get some unsalted butter to try the classic white. The wheat bran is on its way from A.com. Also got some hunny. Hopefully the scale will arrive by the end of next week. I want to try the various recipes to see what they are like. Knowing me, I’ll have more than one favorite. I’m definitely going to have to try the pizza. I am loving the taste of the unbleached flour. There’s a store here that sells it by weight. Ditto the whole wheat flour. I had some in the works while I was out running errands. It had just finished baking when I came back. Walked through the front door and straight into the aroma of freshly baked bread — priceless!
The pizza dough recipe CJ gave is great.
CJ, I’m curious as to your thoughts about the latest news about Planetary Resources – the would-be asteroid miners. Do you think we’ve got the beginnings of the Earth Company?
Ooohhh, Downbelow Station is going on an audiobook?? Lovely…my copy is rather well-worn and I need to get a copy on my Kindle. I’d like an audiobook of that, too. That book is like mental comfort food; I can open it up at any point in the book and just disappear into the story.
Ragi-at-heart—I can’t wait.
You have all been busy, busy, BUSY! Nice to see that things are going well after so many hassles.
Something in me loves the idea of mining in space. Didn’t someone write a book about it? 😉
Bought it. Not too happy about Audible’s encryption but I did buy an mp3 player a while ago with ability to play audible files.
Will enjoy this, I’m sure.

They gave me a copy. I just installed it on my computer with their manager software. I’m not fond of copy-protects, either, but there seems to be no problem with moving it around, thus far.
Protector – Bren goes to be a Major League Baseball referee and gets a nice new chest protector.
Bren becomes a geek, enrolls at MIT, with a pocket protector for his pens etc.
sorry.
One can think of so many ways to interpret “protector”, NSFW, though.
When can we expect Betsy to release the book?
Likely next spring.
I am more than halfway through the audible Cyteen – it’s wonderful – the actress does all the voices well, I love her slightly gruff Denys, and Arienne1 is just chilling (I dreamt about her last night, she throttled a little fluffy kitten in my dream – or was that the Ice Queen .. well, you know what dreams are like ….)
I am also reading Chanur 3 in bed, and Intruder at meal times ….. sometimes I get a little confused I have to admit.
but Cyteen is for work, I am making lots and lots of pots, I can’t wait to get back to the workshop …
highly recommended and looking forward so much to more audio books….. 😀
ps sorry I didn’t get it from your link, as I bought it a few weeks ago, but I will chck out links for the others when they come up … 😀
