We went for a wedding of a couple of friends at the house of another friend from back-when, had a good evening, thank you, GPS! and went with 3 friends to the Seattle Aquarium the next day—I was really flagging at the end of that outing. And at the end of one more day, I’d begun to come down either with Jane’s brother’s cold (we were staying at his house) or feeling the effects of the flu shot: there is one variety of flu shot that gave both Jane and me laryngitis at a con—went totally voiceless and had to whisper into a mike. Plus the week after at Jane’s OTHER brother’s house I caught my blouse sleeve on fire from a candle, and got burned rather badly—couldn’t make a sound to tell other people in the house I was afire, and it was a white carpet, so dropping and rolling seemed rather problematic. I managed to get it out.
Well, remember I let them give me a double dose of flu vaccine, which, along with the pneumonia vaccine, is the CDC’s recommendation for seniors. Hmf! I suggest the director for the CDC take same before he recommends that for people. I’m wondering if what they gave me a double dose of is close kin to the strain that gave us laryngitis a decade or so ago.
Anyway, I’m feeling really crappy, and dosing myself with Theraflu at night and Dayquil by day; and trying to keep moving, but I’m tired of this set of reactions to shots, I’ll tell you. I sound like a bullfrog and my sinuses are in an uproar, plus I have a cough, but I’m using antihistamine to keep the post nasal drip from causing a sore throat that can then get a secondary infection, or getting to my lungs: so far so good. Glug.
Oh, nuts! One wishes that the germs would go pestiferize another household! Still, it all held off until you were back home before falling in on you. One of the few things worse than being sick, is being sick someplace other than your own home and comfort zone. Your experience has convinced me that I can leave the vaccines until further notice to those who truly need them. Talk about the cure being worse than the disease! Please to get well soon, all of you.
One hopes you un-glug quite soon, nand’ CJ.
My internal clock is quite off, which it does occasionally on a whim. Last night, I was up, succumbed to Plot-Bunny-Itis, but realized this morning, what I wrote of actual story, not notes, was not going where I want, so it’s to do over. But it felt good to write, and the two characters are still percolating, so I suppose it’s fine.
Then slept through most of the daylight, which, in both consecutive time and sleeping in the day, is a real rarity for me now, but was most welcome. I feel rested and ready to go.
The beans I fixed yesterday absorbed all their liquid in the fridge overnight and are very nearly refried beans. Quite tasty when warmed. I’m undecided whether to turn them into refritos or add a little water tomorrow, when I next have some. But they’ve hit the spot, both servings.
I’d apparently needed whatever nutrients are in turnip greens and turnips. I had some earlier in the week, over about three days for the pot, and they’ve helped my eyestrain symptoms a great deal, so I’m going to fix some every month or so for a while, in hopes of building up whatever my body’s been lacking. …And will try to get into the habit of a multi-vitamin and B-complex and C and calcium, a habit I’ve never gotten into.
No faceups done today, but possibly tonight or else tomorrow during the day.
A trip to the guitar shop, first time, next week, Tuesday if my cabbie doesn’t try to change it on me.
Both cats here are frisky with the slight cool spell, eager to do and see what’s Outside in the yard, or what they can see Inside through the windows or while nagging me at the keyboard. 😀 (“Hey, pay attention to *me*, not that box! Can we go Outside now, naaoo, naaoo?”)
Best wishes, hope you’re feeling better soon.
Jane’s coming down with it. I think it’s a bona fide virus. Glug indeed.
We had the guys from a roofing company come in to de-moss the roof up here: mosscovered cottages may look romantic in photos, but in reality, up here, the moss will insinuated threads into the seams of the roof and you’ll have major bills if you don’t take care of it. We hired a well-recommended company to remove it with a pressure washer and dust it with zinc powder to prevent regrowth. Should be good for 5 years. Just one of the costs of living in the PNW.
Apropos of very little, one is given to understand that the 73rd World Science Fiction Convention will be in Spokane in 2015. There will also apparently be a “Train-Con” for people using Amtrak to get to Spokane from Seattle or Chicago. Road trip further incentive, anyone?
Except for the likelihood of little sleep while on the train (so many fascinating folks to interact with!), that sounds like a lovely idea. The only SF convention I’ve ever attended is WisCon, but I’m quite tempted, indeed. Will have to see what work load and exchequer look like for 2015.
Yes, indeed. And it should be fun.
Good for Amtrak! As a trainlover, sounds awesome, although I’m not so sure about the “con” part. Had enough convention travel before I retired to last a lifetime (admittedly, not science fiction, but crowded meeting rooms, harried hotel and food service staff, and little time to explore the cities).
I will, however, recommend the train for those who can arrange it. We went from Iowa to San Francisco just after the floods in Colorado, and got to enjoy the detour through Wyoming, where passenger trains no longer go. Great experience. Next year, East Coast for sure and New Orleans probably.
If you get an Amtrak Guest Rewards card now, you could perhaps make the trip for free with points!
Good Lord! You two have certainly had your share of ailments lately! Perhaps it’s all coming in one big package and you will enjoy good health and spirits for the winter.
Meanwhile, how is Jane doing…hope all is well with her.
Flu shots can be the pits. One of the few times I’ve had the flu was after getting the shot; evidently they missed one strain that was here in the northeast….Life!
Toes crossed for major improvements!
There’s an ESO satellite falling to Earth tonight. With the luck you two have been having this year, one might consider hiding in a cave! 😉 One wonders what else could befall you…
Apropos of the flue shot: I had the “super-duper” one. No effects. Of course, individual genomes may vary. OTOH, I’ve had a canker sore on the side of my tongue near the tip for going on two weeks! 🙁
Apropos of roof moss: One can buy/install long strips of zinc about 4″ wide, slid mostly under the shingles (only partially exposed) along the ridge that is supposed to take care of that. I’ve heard of throwing pennies that one accumulates through the day on the roof. There’s also various zinc/copper-based powders one can dust the roof with that kill mosses. Yes, they’re “heavy metals”.
But where mosses grow on rooves, so do lichens. They’re harder to get rid of.
I have found that dipping a Q-tip in Listerine and holding it against the cold sore for a couple of minutes twice a day for two to three days will make it go away. I have no idea why it works, or if it works for everyone, but it works for me.
Lichens will grow on rocks, too. They’re really hard to kill.
Listerine kills Lichens? That’s how my skimming eyes just read this! how to start a rumour.
Flu shot redux: I had the high powered one and apart from a little achiness in that arm was fine.
Sorry to hear that you are both under the weather! First flu shots, burned arms, abscessed teeth, and now this – I think you’ve more than paid your fare for illnesses/injuries this fall.
