One of the Mexican free-tailed bats that lives in the roof has found its way into the main part of the house and is exploring. It’s a bit like having a cat. It seems to be fairly bright, but I know they’re completely untrainable.
Lol! But be careful not to be bitten. Do try to encourage him toward a door tonight at twilight–they do carry rabies.
I did my PhD on bat behavior, and have had five rabies shots (two pre-exposure and three post-exposure). _Tadarida_ does carry rabies, but this one isn’t acting like it has an active infection. We’ll know tonight, but it appears to have left via the way it came into the house. We used to joke you didn’t want to kiss a bat researcher because of the rabies…
It has left, but Diane’s worried it may be back with its buddies for a party.
beautiful, intelligent, active, glossy fur – what more could you want from a cat?! Great show.
The flying cat is back!
Catwings!

Oh, no! He’s probably young and hoping to establish a colony!
Cat wings looks neat. That reminds me of a story, Star Dog, I think by Alexander Key, that I read as a school kid. A mama dog raises a dog-like creature. Seems like it was alien or a hybrid. Way too long ago.
That bat…you’re sure he wasn’t looking for his dorm room? “Hvere is ze student cen-tah?”
That theory needs work. So does my comedy pitch.
Good luck to the little fellow finding a nice lair. — I know Austin encourages the little critters for their insect-catching airborne skills.
Somehow, the way you and CJ put it, that bat’s a sympathetic lone figure out on a quest, and not the great hero, either, but an Everyman or underdog. Er, under-bat. — now I know I’m tired. My brain tried to free-associate that into a bat wearing underwear, jockeys. Comic effect, but….odd! Hmmm…. Intrepid young bat, on a quest alone in the big, wide world to make a new home for himself and find friends…. No, don’t know if my mind’s going anywhere with that. Certain, though, that I don’t know enough about bat behavior. Not against them, though. Odd little mammals. Kinda neat, despite weird ways of doing things.
Is there a chance you’re thinking of the Silverwing series, by Kenneth Oppel?
Yes, I freely admit I spent WAY too much time reading children’s lit. Occupational hazard, but one I don’t mind in the least 😉
