As aforesaid, she has come down with the crud: I still have a touch of it. We’re invited to a filk party tomorrow, but I think it would be wrong to go: it’s in a house where there’ll be a lot of people, and exposure to the stuff now, we judge by when Jane caught it from me, would set everybody in that house up to be sick for Christmas. Nope, nope, nope. I keep my plague-ridden self home. We thought I had picked this up from Jane’s brother, but I think I had to have been exposed a week earlier, to agree with when Jane came down with her case of it.
Nasty stuff! Use a lot of hand-cleanser and stay away from people who have a light cough.
This is the worst time of year to be under the weather.
Gosh….this nastiness seems to have gotten its hooks into both of you. Are you sure it’s viral? It sounds like you acquired some nasty little bacteria. Do you think doc visits might be in order?
Staying home and hunkering down sounds like the best idea. Hope you are both back to full capabilities soon.
Jane is smart to wait until she is less cruddy and can brain again. Hope that happens in short order and that the crud lets go of her sooner than it seems to be letting go of you.
I’m pretty sure it’s viral: Jane is actually on her second prescription of antibiotics because of the dentistry, and she came down with it anyway. I think I became seriously contagious on the drive home from the wedding—I fervently hope so. We thought I had picked it up from Jane’s brother in a short exposure, but considering it’s taken her that long to come down with it, I suspect I met it somewhere else, here in Spokane. I can’t think where was most likely, but it seems to be running rampant. You feel like hell, you cough, and your sinuses aren’t happy: I took guaifenesin OTC from the start, so I didn’t get chest congestion, as I might have.
The flu vaccine has to choose among which flu versions to protect against, and this one clearly was left out. The vaccine takes 2 weeks to give you full protection—and this came on within that window, but the fact Jane has now come down with it—she took the flu shot a week before I got mine–indicates this is a strain of flu not covered in the shot.
So everybody take precautions: you don’t want this stuff.
These things usually take 2 weeks to get over. If not 2 weeks then a fortnight.
Isn’t that like the one about the ground hog and spring? If it sees its shadow, it will be only six more weeks until spring, if not it will be 42 more days…
Yup.
Um, a fortnight *is* two weeks…
Oh, wait I see what you did now. One of those “six of one, half dozen of the other” situations…
I’m doing pretty well at keeping the symptoms under control so far. Still breathing fairly clearly and cough at a minimum. Able to keep saline rinse going (if you get too stuffy, it does more harm than good) so post nasal is minimized.
I was outside most of Thursday hauling gravel and winterizing cuz I KNEW is was coming down with it. I thot I’d be a mess as a result, but I seem to be doing okay, considering.
Speaking of saline rinses, there are those who claim a netti pot is great for head colds, if one could use such a thing. I doubt I could, just like I couldn’t poke my eyeball with a shard of glass on my finger!
Neti-pot seems awkward. Ayr brand makes a squeezebottle type saline rinse, which is easy to use in the shower, no different than using squeezebottle nasal spray, only you just shoot quite a bit up at once. You should, however, use distilled or pediatric-pure water to mix your salt water, because a bacterial infection shot up there would not be cool.
Lol, Tulrose.
If it is the same as the east coast crud, the damn thing lingers. Just when you think that you can do a little pushing of the envelope -just DON’T! There is a further 1-2 weeks of feeling like the life support for an entire vampire nest.
And yes it is nastily contagious.
Take care both of you, and baby yourselves.
and of course, I’m just the person who will decide to push a little. Two consecutive nights of standing out in the cold weather at night, helping with holiday parades. If I were IN the parade, I’d be warm, but it’s the standing around while the parade goes by, after I’ve been out there for an hour helping stage the participants, get cars parked, try not to get beat up by some irate resident who thinks the parking place on the street is his, and then find my car after the whole affair. Friday night it was at least somewhat moderate in temperature, only my hands and feet got cold. Last night, I was freezing all over, even with the layers of warm clothing I had on. So, this morning, maybe whatever I have had gotten another chance to come back and bite me again. It’ll be 2 weeks tomorrow…..yuck!
Yep. I went out to help Jane by whacking iris and loading the green bin, and I nearly relapsed. She’s on chicken soup and ice cream, and I’ll just feed her, keep her out of the yard, and make sure she gets to bed and gets sleep—that was my biggest problem: I had so much trouble breathing in the early stages of this stuff I had trouble sleeping. We’re sticking to the idea of the diet, not going crazy, but we’re eating what appeals to us: at my worst, I wanted pizza. I don’t know where her dietary fancy may light.
Out here, although we have the usual influx of colds and flu-like objects, the kicker recently has been the vog, which has been around in epic proportions. Everyone at work is feeling the effects, which include breathing, sinus, throat and chest problems, or eyes itchy enough to take a scrubby pad to (in my case). The new vent on Kilauea has been burping out the sulfurous gases a-purpose for the last few years, and all that crud drifts up and settles in when the wind is right. I don’t think I would care to live near that on the Big Island; agriculture has been taking a big hit from deleterious effects, not to mention what it does to people.
Vog… query?
I’d guess perhaps a cross between fog and volcanic outgassing…
Yosh. Vog = volcanic fog. Or fug.
(V)olcanic (O)ut (G)assing made sense to me.
I was about to ask too. “Vog.” Good word, unpleasant effects.
Not sure at present if I want to bother going to the grocery store this week, pre-holiday. I think I may choose the better part of valor and not fret over what I forgot at the store last week. Will see how the mood strikes me Mon. – Tue. — Today I was lazy, and I *liked* it.
I hope you both feel better.
Joe, I hope you’re doing better soon too.
I’m doing the happy dance right now. I went out to 2 grocery stores in my neighborhood this morning, getting supplies for the holidays. One usually has better overall prices, but the other one runs specials around the holidays for people who collect their ‘frequent shopper’ coupons. I had enough to get me 2 free 15 pound turkeys, which went right into the chest freezer.
Yay!
