If you get the idea that there is a core group which has done this before, yes, yes, we have done this three times; but we are doing it differently this time—we’ll be hotel-based, centrally located, and we’ll be kind of like a glorified traveling carousel-riding duck-feeding room party, with one barbecue at my place, which is kind of a real small (pray for clear skies) 1954 shotgun Rancher with a (we think) nice back yard with a 5000 gallon koi pond and no grass. You’re very welcome to come. Just join the conversation and let us know, so if we get to planning people-moving, we’re taking everybody into account.

If we bring my car, I’ll have room for 4 in it, or 5 if they don’t mind squeezing in to the back seat, which holds 3 in a “pinch”. AFAIK, I’m coming out with two other people, now, but nothing is carved in stone as of yet.

sorry, Paul, I had posted in a the previous thread that I’m coming from West Central Ohio, about 35 miles north of Dayton.
Once I get to the hotel and unload stuff, there’ll be room for 4 people in my car, maybe 5.
Would dearly love to come, but ala$, short of a lottery win, it’s just not in the card$.
I have been looking forward to this since the last gathering. (I even have enough frequent flier miles!) Alas, my brother is terminally ill, so I have put all plans on hold this year!
I think I’ll have enough cash to do this, several pending work projects going to kick in this spring; unless another work project comes up and bollixes the timing, I’ll be good to go. I’m one of the folks with Joe, which is going to pull him north to Milwaukee, WI. From there, we may either follow 90 or 94.
KAYAK.COM shows me $109 for the *** DoubleTree, but also lists the Quality Inn Downtown *** at $95/room-night for 4 guests, which is a bit further from the river. EconoLounge ** is $67/night. HoJo’s ** for $75 is more central. Or are we specifically trying to throw business to the Doubletree, in addition to having everyone in the same hotel? Or does quality decline more sharply than price in these cases?
From my experience, EconoLounge and HoJo’s are okay if you are on the road and need a bed for the night. They are pretty bare bones and have never struck me as places I would want to have any sort of social gathering.
Aww…It’s not likely I’ll be able to make it there, but it would be so fun. Anyone coming to Westercon? I’m highly tempted to do an Ilisidi cosplay, but I suspect everyone would just think I was Matron Baenre. Not that I don’t have fun with Forgotten Realms, too, but really, they just aren’t the same caliber.
I’m only mentioning the likely routing in case there was a Waver along the way who wanted to thumb a ride. Fate may yet conspire to keep me from making the trip, and the cross-country route would undoubtedly change, but that’s a bridge to burn after its hatched. If Joe doesn’t make the drive, the whole house of cards of course comes tumbling down. As Joe said, nothing is set in stone. But as Bren says, plan a dozen trips, and one will eventually happen.
The route WE use going south is: Spokane I-90 straight on to Billings, then turn south toward Buffalo WY, via I-25, stay at the Motel 6 there (great restaurants), then on to Raton, NM (Motel 6, very plain, Sonic Drive-in across the road…) cross the big bridge of that road (on which the Sonic sits) and head for Texas. That short cut (Hwy 64/87) is fast and a lot safer than it used to be. Head for Amarillo via 87 and don’t let them or your GPS talk you out of it with detour signs. The big detour is going off one ramp and onto the matching one because a bridge is under construction. Pick up I-40 at Amarillo if you’re going to OKC, or head off for DFW on 87. It’s good road, and the biggest trouble is your GPS trying to send you to Pampa.
Interestingly (according to Google Maps), because of road geometry, striking out more-or-less straight west from, oh, say, Indianapolis, and going through through Nebraska to eventually connect with I-25 means you actually ADD about 100 miles and 2 hours travel time, compared to the SD(I-90) & ND(I-94) routes! From KCMO, you skirt northward along the eastern border of NE. In other words: avoid Nebraska! 😉

1) an ice-breaker: tiles for Foreigner series books, So everyone should come with a list of suggested titles…, Associates who can’t attend could send titles in with reasons why they would be good for the series. The laugh factor should definitely be emphasized.
2) Request for Sable Jak to attend the Con if possible for a mini “What’s Next” Panel with CJ and Jane.
3) Requisite book signings.
4) An art auction of paintings, drawings, and other media based on books by CJ and Jane. Artwork would need to be posted on-line two weeks ahead of time and auction bids something like QuiBids would be allowed. All proceeds would go to cover the costs of the artwork and additional proceeds would support our favorite writers, with perhaps one or two items to specifically identified to support the audio novel if that would be helpful.
5) Tinfoil hat making contest.
