…and if I accidentally tossed a ‘good guy’ I do apologize, and hope you will re-enlist! My rule is if it’s got too many improbable consonants in a string, or too many dots, it goes, as probably a ‘bot trying to get in to sollicit members for something. We’re getting an absolute flood of ‘bot signup attempts right now, so I really hope I haven’t accidentally tossed one of our valued members!
I tossed a bunch of 'members' with too many letters in member names…

Chuckle – it seems I survived the purge. ๐
Oh, good! ๐
C.J., I know that our blogs are not as popular as yours is, but between Akismet, Bad Behavior, Secure WordPress, and SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam, we don’t have any ‘bots whatsoever. You’re running WordPress, so you can install these as well, free of charge, and not worry about ‘bots at all.
Technology wants to be your friend. Really.
I’ll go see what I can scare up on those words. It’s costing me too much time to handle the spammers. Thanks, David!
OK, David. I already have Akismet, which has only caught 2 spammers. I had run into si captcha where it was way over-used, on every move you made on the site, but I have set it to appear ONLY when you register, I think, so that will keep it out of the way of our members (it’s the one where it shows you scrambled letters to type in) and you will (I hope) never see it after you are registered.
With much gratitude to David, who is very patient about telling me 3 and 4 times that I need to do something. Here’s hoping this works!
Well, I can still comment, so it’s not keeping out all of the riff-raff. ๐
Hope you can deal with them, though.
My friend Jay registered last night. The last he posted, he was waiting for a password. I assume he made it through (it was probably a yahoo address that incorporated “jay”)
I am still here, woot!
So glad to hear the voices from the rubble! ๐ And Jay is on.
Or voices from the rabble! ๐
Guess I’m still here since I’m logged in.
mtz,you don’t have too many letters! ๐ The ones I’m tossing have like 15 or 20. They look like lhuidshjeoiw and jpiotopody. Or web addys that look like y.a.s.m.i.n.gory@gmail.com.
But now, thanks to David, any new people on the site have to sort through a challenge and then hopefully will never be challenged by our bot-gatekeeper again.
Well, I’m here with new drive and controller. The controller was flaky rather than the drive. Now, just have to wait till my files are all downloaded.
Ooooh, tulrose! That sounds expensive. Hope all downloads are ok. 8)
If it looks like the username was created by dropping the keyboard, probably a spammer, yep, yep.
Note that Gmail strips out dots from the name before delivering the mail (so y.a.s.m.i.n.something@gmail.com is the same as yasminsomething@gmail.com), and some people intersperse dots into the address to be able to track where they have used it for registrations. Doesn’t mean it’s not a spambot after all, though…
I am very glad to know that—and may have tossed a few completely undeserving, which is why David is right; a gateway test is the best and fairest thing. There were no alphabet-soup members signed up this morning. But we do have Galaxis, the first new member under the New Gateway System. Welcome!
I was lucky, didn’t get tossed. But something weird happened when I went to sign on to this site. You don’t want strange people with access to your Dashboard do you? Don’t want to say how I did it but it was disturbingly uncomfortably simple…
bookavenger@hotmail.com
Welwyn, according to what we’re getting with the new Captcha plugin, it will direct you to your own dashboard on this site, but it is not the administrative dashboard.
If anybody gets anything different, tell us immediately.
Check mine, I think I got admin status.
according to my listing, AC7, no; but just poke a few buttons and if things do work,a) don’t change anything! and b) let me know!
