…for certain series, like Foreigner. It’s a shame to let the stuff scroll off into oblivion. If I use my amazing admin powers to snatch up comments, edit them for brevity and organize them into an ongoing Foreigner Guidebook, then it become a resource that can live here permanently. There probably should be one for Alliance-Union also.
So, again using my amazing admin powers, I am going to create it, and move some data into it. I will also have a list of contributors at the top—it will be your screennames. But since it will be a steadily lengthening post, it will be harder and harder to find the comments. We will deal with that creatively when the need arrives.
good idea.
Terrific! 🙂 😀 😆
Another author I know has created a Wiki for his Universe, and has encouraged readers to contribute. It’s worked well enough that he’s able to use it for consistency checking. Something to consider, perhaps.
I like the Wiki idea.
As a sidebar; it’s flooding in OKC.
I saw that! Where’s the flooding? Canadian, or up by Ski Island (MacArthur)?
I don’t know the City, but here’s a news report with pictures and video. http://www.newson6.com/global/story.asp?s=12644589

The house Jane and I used to share is about 6 houses removed from the bend that faces the dam in this picture. Those weir boards they talk about were the subject of many a loud homeowners’ meeting…My bet is they have bent on schedule. I’ve seen it worse—
I’ll Third that Wiki idea – I’m a wiki person, myself, and will eventually be setting one up for my own creative works, if I have my druthers. Plus, with all of us Circlers you’ll have plenty of people to watch it for you!
I’d put in a vote for a Morgaine notebook, too. Just in case you ever get a chance to continue their saga.
I do have a question, though. Would you be using it for consistency, corrections, clarifications, etc.?
I second the Wiki idea.
Btw, I am SO GLAD you have been writing in the Alliance-Union universe again. Cyteen was my fav book so I was ecstatic to find a sequel (finally!) Just finishing the last few pages of Regenesis.
Finding unread C.J. Cherryh books is like finding unwrapped xmas presents w/ your name on them! Looking forward to catching up on the latest Foreigner books, too. Thank you!
xoxox
I was finally motivated to create an account rather than lurking to agree with this comment. Cyteen is one of my favorite books, and I would love to see a followup to Regenesis.
Yes, and a separate Chanur one, too.
Just a suggestion but If there is enough information, notes, articles etc. then you could consider a short e-book describing a lot of the detail in each universe. I know I’d pay for information as to what happened in the end to the Fleet….. heck I’d probably pay you to write a short story on that one!
Oh – probably the best example of such a notebook / wiki site is http://www.perrypedia.proc.org/wiki/Hauptseite but then given that there are 2500+ main novelettes, 800+ companion and 400+ full novels with a cast of thousands, they need a good one!!!
Wikia have a lot of wikis for various universes, ranging from Wookieepedia for the Star Wars universe to the Kencyr Wiki for P C Hodgell’s books.
Ever consider reopening Merovingen Nights with a new series? That is something that just screams compendium.
Actually, yes, I’ve been thinking about that.
oh yippee! I loved those books. But then, I can’t think of anything you’ve done I haven’t liked.
but, egads, it looks like you’ve created a monster with this suggestion.
Speaking of which, weren’t you kinda leaning in that direction for Gold in Ardarin, you S&S?
Excellent! I’m not really big on fan fiction, but if you couldn’t get enough veteran authors on board, this would be an outstanding opportunity for newer and unknown authors to exposition their work. Just a thought.
I see one book with multiple sections.
I’d certainly buy it!
Just another valentine since I wrote at the publication of the first Foreigner novel. I love this series. Thank you.
I meant to say I just finished Deceiver and I am still enthralled. Caijeri is mature for rising nine. What about Jago, does she have a biological clock. Where can that romance go?
I’d contribute AND buy it! There are things that we fans notice that, well…
I have in mind the fact that Tabini’s major-domo (pre-Murini) had at least 3 different names. 🙂
CJ,
Would a Foreigner notebook or elsewhere be an appropriate place to send you a brief list of typos in a book? I spotted maybe 3-5 typos in the new Foreigner novel, although being that I was reading it in bed or on the subway I didn’t write them down but can probably find a few. How or should we readers handle this in the future?
I’m more or less the clearinghouse, but if you send them straight to DAW, they can fix it in the next printing.
I vote for one wiki for CC with subsections for each universe. Compendium with CC contributors = WIN.
Wow, this one has certainly stirred favorable comment! I’m open to the Wiki idea if there’s no copyright compromise; and I’ll continue to collect stuff until we have some sort of substance, as well.
There are a number of versions that you can setup and host on your own website – and since I presume you have to have MySQL with Joomla, you should be able to fairly easily setup the wiki, since the MediaWiki software is based on MySQL. It’s also customizable so that you can have every page saying that the content is under your copyright protection, or whatnot.
We don’t have Joomla. Lynn is our MySquirrel expert, and I will ask her.
Ah. For whatever reason, I thought you were using Joomla for the CC store.
The idea of salvaging some content is a good one, just remember it is added
work. I was involved in a group RPG game development and condensed the online
discussions into a usable form. Sounded good, but was a really bad idea.
So it may be a great idea, just ration any time you devote.
What kind of thing are you looking for ?? Your work makes people think about
it and maybe read something into it which can enhance the background a bit.
The Kif for example are very mysterious creatures in primate terms. The only
equivalent might be a faculty tea.
The wiki with sections for each universe sounds like a good idea, then the work of creating content and updating can be shared around with the Closed Circle members and won’t all land on your desk, apart from setting it up.
Off topic: is Lynn OK? It’s been a long while since she’s blogged, and her progress bar hasn’t moved lately either.
Lynn seems to be on the road. We are getting a little concerned ourselves, and need to try calling her.
