…is clear.
It wasn’t yesterday. It was green murk.
Today, though I did absolutely NOTHING…
It’s clear. You can see the rocks on the bottom.
It’s my theory that the bursting of the sand filter gasket that dumped sand and dust into the pond, turning it milky for days…has finally done what sand does when you dump it into bioactive water, and gathered a shell of bacteria about each dust particle. There is, indeed, a fine dusting of sand all over the bottom.
The not-too-cheap actual filter I ordered is still on its way.
It will undoubtedly be useful.
But now the water is so clear our fish look suspended in glass.
Go figure.
So can you leave the sand in the bottom of the pond, or does it need to be siphoned out to remove the cruft load? Or will you leave it alone, in the theory that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t need to be fixed?
If it ain’t broke…
It’s no worse than dust, and I’m sure we have plenty of dust…
nature has such interesting ways to get back in balance
Put it down to the perversity of inanimate objects (sand, pond, and filter in the mail) when in contact with animate objects (koi, and CJ) impacting other Significant objects (sanity, wallet). Glad the gunk is settled, hope the drama has ended for a while.
This is not a closed ecosystem. The filter will come in handy one day!
Uhmmm… totally tangential, but fun:

There are days when I think the multiverse does stuff on purpose just to mess with our heads. Today was your day. When the pond is so clear that the fish look suspended in glass, take pictures! I,for one, am not getting my MDR of koi pix.
I love it when the fish look like they are swimming in air; it’s magical. I hope Jane will take many photos of the fishies; they’re always a treat.
Last year when we finally put the real filter in Proge worked and worked to clear the algae. This year he gave it one treatment as soon as we put in the filter and it cleared completely in a matter of two days. The fish were visible to the bottom which is why we put the net back on. There were no leaves to speak of and Mr. Red Tail Hawk looked like he was glued to the branch over the pond. (“Dude, that is food! If you are not going to eat it I am!”)
The pool has been another story. It was warm and swimmable in May. Then it rained for the better part of June and turned the water green. I was changing the D.E. in the filter every other day and treating the water with algicide and shock to very little avail. It began to clear a bit and I thought that perhaps I could go a bit longer before changing the filter. I still don’t know what happened but less than 48 hours later the water was like glass. Who knows?
I’m happy to hear that the water has cleared and you are able to sit by the pond without the thought of more backbreaking labor. And all this before it’s time to close everything down for the winter!
Enjoy!
^like a Roger Dean painting !
It’s the difference between a surfing beach and swimming beach. They crashing waves keep the sand churned up. I like the mystery myself. So far, I’ve flipped a couple of sand sharks out of the water and scooped up another scaly hitchhiker on my bodyboard.
That reminds me. Do the Atevi surf? I’ve wondered about that a few times when reading the Foreigner books.
Uh-oh, looks like the surfing discussion migrated from Jane’s blog over to here. — Cool, I’ve never surfed, but it looks great. — And oh, do I miss having a pool…but not the pool maintenance. Hmm, though if I had a loyal minion pool boy…. *ahem* Yes, ah, well….
My two cats are convinced I should be doing something besides sitting at the computer. :: poke, poke, poke; meow! ::
If you live close enough to a coast, the bodyboarding variety of surfing has the lowest cost barrier to entry though you have to be pretty athletic to get out where the waves are. The big boards are way more buoyant and easier to paddle. I never quite caught the hang of standing up. This is probably all way off topic but local surf conditions are flat right now. If I can’t surf, talking about surfing is the next best thing.
My cats believe I should stay at the computer where they can get at me.
It’s so pretty!
