I have not the least notion what’s going on, but I’m beginning to think I’m caught in my own confounded spam filter, which has never caught ANY spam, only our own honest members.
I keep getting a prompt to enter my password for a server I don’t recognize, and my security software cautions me its an unsecured connection. I am NOT happy with this situation.
I’m getting really suspicious, since it happens mostly when I include a link.
yes, be suspicious of that, don’t enter a password for anything until problem is solved. See if you can access normally from Jane’s computer. Check antivirus I know you’ve thought of. If no hits, download another free antivirus and try that. Avira & AVG whichever. See if the same thing happens with another browser. Just a few initial thoughts. Are you hooked up via wireless?
Hmm… I agree with WS. Try Opera or Firefox browsers. It sounds like something has somehow redirected your browser. Especially if you use Internet Explorer.
hmmm
I have a problem on my pc at the moment which seems related. everything wants me to log in on start up, which it doesn’t at all on the mac. I am getting in my pc man this week to try to get it sorted. its really slow again too, which WAS a trojan, which he SAID he had sorted out …
I have AVG …
I can’t remember if you use Windows or a Mac, but if you use the former you may find that a combination of Spybot Search & Destroy(donationware), Spyware Blaster(donationware) and AVG Free will keep your PC vermin-free.
I haven’t had any malware/virus trouble for well over 5 years, for what it’s worth.
THanks. It is a hack—just what I needed right now—it applies only to admin’s edit function, and it’s under discussion in the forum. They’ve found the location of the code, and we think we can fix it. I’ve got AVG full edition, but it got past AVG. I’ll keep you posted. The key word on this little deal is Magic. It will refer to your site name, say the server at Magic is requiring a login. It’s active only on PHP sites. When we get the fix, I’ll post it, in the remote chance any others of you who are admin on a php site have picked it up.
Concur on the Spybot, I run that religiously about every 2 or 3 weeks. It also has a memory-resident segment called TeaTimer that seems to work pretty well.

Sometimes you can detect if your browser’s been redirected by typing in URLs versus hitting a link or shortcut, but as Wayspooled said, be very cautious if you’re getting asked for passwords..
FWIW, I was having trouble with IE8 a couple days ago, browser locking up. I forget how I became suspicious of “add-ons” but IE8 (or ?) had put a new button on my toolbar/top of the browser and I think it was called “Manage Add-Ons” in bold. I don’t remember for sure because I right-clicked and deleted said button, and since then have been trouble-free! Can still access the manage feature from the Tools menu.
This is a different problem than what is posted here, but it may have been something posted in the Pub that brought it to mind…

I think the term Catch-22 was presciently invented in advance for the computer age.
