The Dell has been going pink, increasingly, on recovery from standby: I appealed to tech support, jumped through about 2 requisite hoops, and got, yes, a brand new screen installed this morning. I tell you, a laptop at-home service policy is worth the cost. This way, over 6 years of warranty, they’re gradually building me a new computer. Palm rest, keyboard (2x), screen—let’s hear it for the motherboard.
Got myself a brand new computer screen…

Reassuring to hear that good service is still in existence.
Good to hear that you’re up to snuff again!
WOOHOO!!!! and the best part is they COME TO YOU! ;)) hmmmm if you have “accidental” coverage in case of spills, you could say the cat watered it 😉 then they’d end up replacing all the really important stuff like motherboard, hd, memory, processor, video card – just make sure you have a complete backup before doing that 😉
ms. cherryh, have been browsing audible.com and itunes for audible books tonight as i got my new pretty ipod nano in and i can’t find any of your books in digital audio format. have any of yours been recorded as an audio book? i love to listen to books now while i’m working in the studio…
Nothing legal, alas.
My last Dell benefitted greatly from its service plan: new hard drive (three times), new plastic case, new screen, new motherboard (twice), new network card, new fan, … Though not all of those had actually failed – they tended to just throw parts at the problem rather than trying to diagnose the problem first.
Yay, for the new screen! I’ve been holding out, not knowing what to buy, not wanting to buy anything in the UK since it’ll only be with us until we leave (2.3 years, but who’s counting). Enjoy!
Gods in pink feathers! What do you people do to your poor computers?
Are these all laptops? This I understand: a major function of any laptop is bouncing off the floor–often unsuccessfully. Though a boss of mine once drop-kicked a Toshiba laptop down the hall for minor cosmetic damage though it was running, screen-up–just to see.
