Her father and my father were 7th cousins once removed (a generation apart). Jane and I are 8th cousins.
We have not stopped being 10th cousins, down another line.
We share 24th-great grandparents, once removed.
We therefore share 25th, 26th, 27th, etc. And I’m pretty sure we share a 17th-great grandfather, but I haven’t gotten to that part of the chart yet: he’s a son of the 24th-greats. But we know that he was married? to my 17th-great grandmother Isabella, and their child was Jane’s 16th-great, who married my 19th-great grandmother…which has to be a relationship that went down another track entirely.
Well, go back far enough, and you can guaranteed being related. My nephew and his wife are something like 10th cousins. More than 20 generations (17th cousins) and you’re into high-probability territory.
It’s a little like the guy who showed up at a genealogy meeting and announced he’d gotten ‘all the way back to Charlemagne’, expecting oohs and ahhs and massive congratulations. Instead people were laughing: it’s relatively easy to get to Charlemagne – he’s a long way back and has zillions of descendants. Getting to someone from the Mayflower or Jamestown is much harder, because they’re more recent and there’s a smaller gene pool to start with.
and in news: they moved a Saturn engine last night.

I believe it was nearly half a century ago I read in Bell’s “Men of Mathematics” one of his subjects made his living as a genealogist to aristocracy, mathematics was his hobby. (Somehow Leibnitz’ name comes to mind.) He said the job was “to prove his clients deserved titles into which their ancestors had neglected to fornicate them.” If the King takes a notion he’s descended from Julius Caesar, you’d best show there’s a way that can be attributed!
Why are avatars not showing up? Instead of avatar pictures, I’m seeing little grey squares.
LOL! Oh, that tangled web we weave! I plan to use this stupid furlough and dig into Ancestry with a vengence. A few years ago, a wayward email got me instead of the intended. I was born a Ryan, she married one, but we both have the same first name. I’m an archeaologist, and she now works at the National Trust tor Historic Preservation. We’ve kept in touch, we both fuss with genealogy and just realized we have the same birthday. Too many coincidences to stop now!
All of we daughters of Eve are related… cousins at the very least!
WOL, I can see the avatars just fine. If they still aren’t showing up for you, possibly it is something in your computer’s settings?
Hoping things will be OK for you soon.
