Mornings are getting nippy. The koi, while active, are going to be going on winter-prep wheat germ soon.
We’re looking at last bits for the garden—time to trim things up that will stay trimmed for spring, and to deprioritize those things that are going to die back.
We’ve still got a monster pile of basalt chips we need to distribute along the paths…sigh. That’s a heckuva chore, and it’s pretty taxing for me, which throws more of it on Jane. Think of a chest-high boulder that needs to be moved, as chips.
But—we’re in good shape. Had a pretty good review by the endocrinologist, and am down another pound.
We’re making plans to get back to the gym, too.
Half a bucket at a time, starting furthest out. The trip gets shorter with every bucket, and a chair and coffee pot at the central pile doesn’t hurt either!
There’s nothing that says you have to do it all at once, either. Is there anything that demands you can’t take until the snow flies?
Good advice!
Sleepy Hollow, the new TV series on Fox on Monday nights that puts a spin on the old story, I just watched the pilot episode. I really enjoyed it and I will be watching future episodes. The pilot was well done, a smart new take on the story, beautiful cinematic quality, and the cast fit very well. If they keep it up and don’t become bogged down (no pun intended) in a potentially too easy out for storytelling, and if Fox avoids pulling the plug prematurely as with other shows, then they have a hit. Fan friends locally and online have said they liked it a lot also. So…a recommendation.
Hi everyone. I thought I should introduce myself since I finally made an account. I saw the comments about the Carmen Miranda song and had happy memories related to being at filk parties.
I also feel compelled to comment: do you really need to go back to a gym when you have a pile of basalt to move? Really? (JK, I know having the help of a trainer and all of the modern workout machines can be good for getting into shape.)
Lol—well, as I used to argue with me mum, housework isn’t exercise. Need to do some aerobic stuff…
Welcome in!
It is good: we gave it a look. A few anachronisms, to say the least (they could use a technical advisor) but pilots are always sketchy in some sense. Hopefully they will settle down and make a good show.
Another to watch for, second week in OCt, I think, is How the Earth Works, which I hope is the same quality as How the Universe Works and How the Earth Was Made.
re: Sleepy Hollow. I like the characters, which is a critical component for me. I’ll follow likeable characters through any ridiculous scenario. The librarian heard we were rewatching Stargate (FAB characters, some pretty ridiculous situations) and recommended Fringe, so we borrowed it … but we didn’t like anybody on Fringe. Fast forwarded through the pilot and next episode (love those closed captions–read fast!) but still didn’t like anyone enough to continue. The characters are the reason I’m eagerly awaiting the next Foreigner book: I *like* everybody. (Though, sadly, most of them wouldn’t understand the concept.)
Let’s try the idea of pleasure in companionship. Surely there must be associations which specialize in that, just as there are kabiu masters?
Yes, the summer season is broken. Some early rains we had earlier this month were unfortunately early. I needed the siding and windows on the south side of my house replaced, and the lower 3′ of siding on the west. It’s about done, but for some misalignment of the fixed pane of the sliding patio door. I “rollered” one coat of paint on the siding. (Finished last Saturday, with “touchup” corners done this Thursday.) Were I 20 years younger, and it had been done as I wished in July, it would have benefitted from a second coat.
(A stsho might not like the color. The siding was primered tan. Pure white is notorious for not “covering”. So there’s just the slightest bit of black in this first coat. The west side isn’t well matched. What I used on the south was too dark so I went with pure white. The old color is whiter than white.)
OT Who’s who in Foreigner (link at the top, above the banner): @GreenWyvern, can you add Invitations to the list of books to choose from?
And maybe a sort of sign-in list of the books on the splash page, where people can note which books they’re doing/have done?
At the moment it’s not clear which books still need to be added.
I did Foreigner (1) and Deliberations, then I stopped because I didn’t want to monopolise this group effort.
Someone else (mmberry?) has clearly added the complete book 7, Destroyer.
Books 2,4, 5 and 6 are mentioned in the column ‘first mentioned’, but with book 7 in the ‘change’ column, so I get the impression that books 1 and 7 are still the only ones fully entered into the who’s who.
Is anyone else still working on this?
…
I asked this on the Who’s Who page in August, but as nobody responden I’m repeating it here.
Is anyone adding anything to the Who’s Who, or has it been decided to abandon this and stick with the Shejidan wiki? It’s not nearly as specific or complete as far as minor characters go, so I’d think the Who’s who would be a nice and useful addition.
Wasn’t me. I got started and got sidetracked! (sorry)
Indeed, the seasons are a-changin’. It’s possoble but unlikely we’ll be getting any real warm days for the next six-months or more. So, this morning I engaged in my semi-annual ritual of “changing the sheets”. Off came the muslin into the laundry, and on went the flannel. Love the flannel sheets on chilly winter nights! 😉
@Hanneke I’ve added Invitations to the list.
I don’t have time at the moment to add a list to record who’s doing what, but it doesn’t really seem active enough to need it, anyway. If you sort or filter by books, you’ll soon see what’s been done, and whether anyone else is working on it.
I’m currently busy working on a Windows database for a UN agency in Geneva. They are doing a politically sensitive survey in central Asia. About 60 monitors are now out in the field collecting data on laptops from hundreds of detailed interviews, and the next step is to write the software to analyse the information and understand the results.
Meanwhile in my part of the world (Cape Town), we’re not heading into Fall, but Sumer is icumen in after a cold and rainy winter.
Thanks, GreenWyvern, I’ve added the few entries for Invitations. Succes with the software writing.
Another spate of hotmail spammer emails blocked. It seems one of the spam tracking sources is limiting their API keys now. Registrations were despite new tools. Sigh. But my new forum is doing fine, no false registrations.
