I’ve had them on half an hour, and the distance-vision sparkles again! I can read the instructional buttons on the microwave. Reading the computer is still iffy, but there’s an adjustment curve on this, and you may just have to put up with my misspelling things for a week. I can basizally see, but it’s not sharp yet. Eyes have a way of ‘learning’ how to focus under a situation, and this looks as if it’s do-able. If it isn’t, I may be able to get away with an over-the-counter pair for close focus.
The brand is Optix, and kudos to my optometrist, who could have sold me multiple pairs of glasses—has in past: but she was all excited to be able to offer me this instead of all of it. I like this woman—and say what you might about Walmart, the fact that she doesn’t have to make her living and support her staff off sales of the supplies is a benefit to us all.
If you wear bifocals, or think you can’t wear contacts because of your weird precription, there’s new stuff out there; and if you haven’t tried any lenses on since the days of plastic lenses, these are anazingly comfortable—even kind and moisturizing to the eyes: I think it’s thimoserol. Brand of lens matters: there’s a flud they can use on some lenses that I”m allergic to and it stings and is irritating; but these are packed in something safe. Stings just a very little, then settles to be nice. Optix is the best, SFAIC, and these are wonderful!
Glad the new glasses are going well!
No glases—only one pair of contacts. 😉
Thank you for mentioning this. I am going through some kind of post 40 eye focus thing and I think I need to get a new solution. I’m taking my glasses OFF to see stuff these days!
Yippee!
AS you get older, supposedly your eye muscles stiffen up and you tend to become far-sighted. I used to be somewhat near-sighted, but not so much any more. I’ve always shied away from contacts, because I used to have ferocious allergies, the type that made you want to take a Brillo pad to your eyeballs. My allergies have mostly subsided (no more Brillo!), but I still am not comfy with sticking things in my eyes.
Actually—I find that allergies affect me less while wearing contacts, because there is less of the actual eye exposed to dust and pollen and fumes. Just don’t, for instance, spray weedkiller without goggles on while wearing contacts, because they will pick up stuff like paint spatter and volatiles you meet. But outside of that—I love wearing them during allergy season in particular. My eyes don’t water as much.
IT is, however, an unusual sensation when I pick up speed on the ice rink and they get a bit cold. I like to wear light sunglasses on the ice for a while when starting up with contacts again, to protect my eyes against the drying cold wind.
All of a sudden I’m glad that I’ve put off making an appointment at the optometrists. I’ve been wearing bifocals for a long time. And I’d love to go back to contact lenses. But I thought it wasn’t possible. I think I’ll make an appointment at Walmart.
Thanks CJ. I owe you!

Lol—Optix is a generally available brand, also at Costco, and probably regular optometrists.
CJ, thimerosal is actually a mercury-based preservative. I suppose it’s an effective preservative, but the the fact that it contains some form of mercury puts me off. I also had problems with irritation until I started using a cleaning and soaking solution without thimerosal. Something to consider, perhaps …
I agree about fewer allergy effects while wearing contacts as opposed to glasses. They’re better when you’re chopping onions, too!
For anyone contemplating lenses, as CJ says, they will they pick up paint spatters, etc. but they will also absorb anything you have on your hands when you touch them – including bacteria, so hands always have to be scupulously clean and well-rinsed when handling the lenses.
I may need to give those contact lenses a try.
I am allergic to thimerosal. But I never weep while cutting onions if I have my lenses in 🙂
These days I wear my trifocals more than my lenses, on the theory that I need reading glasses with the lenses and if I have to have the reading glasses around anyway I had just as soon wear the glasses. I just heard today that my optomotrist is retiring after 50 years of practice. I loved him. He was like a giant heron – tall, skinny, stooped, and extraordinary. I will be so sad to not have him any more.
My 11.5 year old has to get new glasses every three months or so – her eyes are changing but she is very sensitive to those changes, more than most. Also she is growing. I am thinking maybe she is responsible enough for contacts after all. It has to be cheaper than new glasses 🙁
One is very glad your new lenses are helping!
