Remember SweetBo’s “Be with the People!” comment? They need that.
Jane and I have an unbreakable rule: we don’t go to bed on a quarrel, we always say good morning to each other, we remember that household tasks are happiest done with a “thank you for getting that” from the other person, the cook always gets a “Yum!” or a “This is unusual”—for the oopses. And the cook will cheerfully say: “I don’t think humans should eat that—let’s go to Swinging Door.” We’ve been together since the 1980’s, and we’re as polite to each other as we are to strangers, or more so. We think that’s a good rule.
He was textng as well?? – weird! I agree that good manners are vital in a relationship, most especially an intimate one. I really dislike seeing mothers texting/phoning while their baby/child just sits…
My best friend had her phone in her dress pocket at her wedding. It was on vibrate but someone figured out she had it there so everyone was calling it. She had been terrified (we were late because we had to pry her out of the car…very bad case of nerves) but the vibrating phone broke up the tension. It was a beach wedding so the sound was carried off by the wind if you were more than 3 feet away. She was in much better spirits when leaving to string instruments playing a song from Star Wars. Geeks have the most fun.
On a random note, I just found out I have a wheat/gluten allergy. I’ve been in various stages of sick for months so this is a good thing to have figured out. Now off to learn how to cook differently and tell myself no all the time. I’m in my 20s so this will be interesting for my friends too. I was already the better eater of the bunch. I’m sad about the local pub more than anything else. I have reactions to wine already. Rum? Maybe that will be my thing. I don’t think gluten was one of your things, right? I seem to have a load of old world genes. Nightshade family gives me problems too.
It is the Wheat allergy version. I have an immune system response resulting in red stabby eyes, swollen face, rashes, swollen joins, inflamed muscles…irritability. It is bad enough. I am glad I don’t have the gut problems too. They did the skin test and I am waiting to hear back on the blood work, but we are pretty sure it isn’t celiac. If I start having more problems they’ll have to go in and look. I do not want that. Ick.
FYI, rubbing Aveeno on your hands and then rubbing your eyes — very bad idea. Instant attack. Why didn’t I realize what was in that stuff? I was getting pretty pissed here at work because I hadn’t eaten anything and I was getting sicker by the second. I’ll have to go through my bathroom now too. So much to learn. It seems like washing has fixed it right up though. With eating it takes a few days for the mistake to go away I find. Now to clean off the surfaces, my mouse, keyboard…I keep getting residue in my eye. Sigh. The honeymoon is over.
Spouse and I have the rule about going to bed angry, too. I don’t know that we always have good manners–sometimes we’re pretty snarky with each other–but there’s always, always respect.
@ SweetBo — There was discussion of gluten allergy, and there are recipes, a few, at a science fiction and Farscape fan forum called Terra Firma. See: http://www.terrafirmascapers.com/ and after registering, go to the Commerce Planet (the hangout for general discussion) and check the recipe thread at Noranti’s Kitchen. Feel free to ask the forum at large. It’s a friendly community, people behave and are helpful. The folks who have discussed gluten and other dietary needs would be happy to point you in the right direction. (Hammond or Treblin, 😉 ) All sorts of folks there, fans from all backgrounds. Yes, you’ll find me there too. I *know* there were recipes for breads and desserts. I’ll start a thread to ask about it.
Thanks for the reply. I’ll have to check it out. The run through the grocery last night was pretty grim. I could use some ideas. Not sure how quickly I’ll be back to traitorous bread (even substitutes) because the thought of that makes me kind of ill, but I’m sure being able to make a dessert I can eat will come up eventually.
I used to be in Farscape fandom! That really takes me back. I need to rewatch that again. Trying to get the show renewed back in the day sorta burned me out. Maybe it is time for a revisit.
You will certainly learn to read labels closely. Watch out for any oriental foods with soy sauce because most soy sauce and the foods that are seasoned with it contain wheat. Depending on your sensitivity and the range of glutens that you react to, you may have to avoid MSG, modified food starch, hydrolized vegetable protein, poultry seasoning! rye, barley, malt, and oats that haven’t been labeled gluten/wheat free.
Supermarkets vary widely. In the Northwest, Fred Meyer’s has a workable selection of basics, my spouse likes EnerG Brown Rice Loaf for day to day. They also carry a Kroger’s “light” gluten-free/low salt soy sauce. “A Taste of Thai” has meal kits for Phad Thai, Thai Peanut, and others most of which are gluten-free as well. She is also starting to find tasty gluten free pastry in the cold cases and freezers at Fred Meyer and Safeway.
There’s a large community that can provide support including the lady who’s been at my side for more years than the 30 since she was diagnosed with severe celiac disease.
One wonders if the bride was texting the best man, and if the groom was texting the maid-of-honor………something about the night before? j/k I can think of a lot of other things to be doing during a wedding at which I am a major player, but having my phone on my person is not one of them.
Worse than rude. There are some occasions in life in which it’s better to be fully “in the moment.” Why is so much more importance given to an electronic device than to the flesh & blood people in one’s immediate vicinity?

Tell her to go here http://www.celiac.com/ Everything you wanted to know including recipes and restaurants that have gluten free menus.
My parents were the same about never letting an argument linger. Not that they had very many but once it was done it was done. I’ve ended up with the same philosophy but on occasion I’ve been accused of not caring because I wasn’t still annoyed an hour later. To me an argument is a way to clear the air and relieve tension – like a pressure valve. It blows, you let it vent, then you carry on as you were before.
As for phone use – that’s complicated but here’s how I see it:I won’t allow a telephone conversation to usurp a face to face conversation. For specific occasions that just means disabling the calling function. If I just happen to be in some one else’ company then personally I’d apologise to whoever was with me and check who was calling. I’d only answer if I thought it was important and I’d apologise to them again. I would also endeavour to keep the call short and because I’m a bloke and – frankly – a little antisocial that means it wouldn’t last long. I have no problems cutting a call short and promising to call them back. People who know me know that I always keep promises like that.
Hey SweetBo, you’re very welcome. The fans over there are into all sorts of things including Farscape, and the ability to stay connected with fellow fans is great.
The thread is getting some attention, including other good sites. There’s a beef kabob mention that I’d like to try, and a burrito wrap using rice wrappers. Yes, these are things you could eat.
Thanks a bunch! I am waiting for my registration to be approved. I am going to have to get educated really fast. Mom is already freaking out about the Thanksgiving meal so I want to be able to help find alternatives.
@sweetbo
You should have a look at Glutefreegirl’s book and her blog.
My son has an gluten allergie, I have it too, just not as strong, and my wife has an allergy against rye. We bake our bread ourselves, and there is a lot of food you can buy on the internet – from oreo-compatible cookies to glutenfree beer.
It’s not really a big problem, it makes you just more concious about eating.
Thai and indian food is the easiest when you want to eat in a restaurant, originally there’s no wheat in it, besides bread as for example in naan. Mexican food should be a possibility as well, usually only northern mexican recipes originally contain wheat.
AND my favorite breadmaker, the Cuisinart, has both a setting and a recipe for gluten-free bread. That ‘setting’ part is great—whoever figured out the stops, timing, rise, temperature schedule for this breadmaker is a robotics genius and a primo baker all in one. Given that, you could make rolls (take the dough out before it’s baked) or bread (leave it in and let it bake) and if there’s any deal where sandwiches would have to be ordered breadless, heck, just bring two slices of your own in a ziplock and you have a proper sandwich.
If you have allergies, or are at all sensitive, Alcohol of any kind isn’t a good thing. I know people like their beer, rum, wine, etc., but quitting drinking can make a huge difference to your health.
And when I say quitting, I mean quitting. Your friends will get used to you drinking Pepsi, tea or whatever.

Yeah, he was texting to his best buds: “Ho, ho! You should see what I’m getting into tonight!”
No wait, this isn’t a century ago. 😉 Forget I suggested that. He’s already been.
I thought I heard my name…

Gluten allergy is one thing, but celiac disease is something else again! Have you been tested for celiac? If not, do!

Oh, dear me, sweetbo, that’s too bad. I have recipes for gluten-free bread I can post for you, if you want them: and the Cuisinart breadmaker has them. That might give you some options. There are some fastfood places that offer gluten-free options. http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/2009/04/gluten-free-cheat-sheet-how-to-go-g.html

It is clear from its position that she knew she was going to need it at some point during the ceremony. Perhaps she was a boy scout in her youth.
