When we fixed the Deliberations glitch, we had to haul the html back into WordPerfect, then retranslate to html. This process apparently proliferated yet ANOTHER glitch, causing a weird character to pop up in the text — in some browsers—
So if you are not totall out of patience with us, go to Closed Circle’s main page which now has a special download link that will let you download a NEW (the third) version of Deliberations. If you have JUST done this, it could glitch because of your old link still being valid, so if that happens, use your old link—which will get the version 3 file just fine (that being what is up there now) —sigh!
E-book conversion is not for sissies. And it’s the SHORTEST of the new stuff. And I tried to be so careful…
Sigh, I just tried to get the fixed version of the fixed version (my nook has annoying little squares after the close-parenthesis) and the email didn’t have any link in it. Not sure whuzzup with that, I bought on the 25th, so the original link is expired.
I think they make software incomprehensible for job security purposes!
You’re not alone. I’m trying desperately to figure it out. Have the plugin guy onto the problem. Please, please please, folks if you get a successful link, let us know. He asked me to ask you all:
Ask those customers if they notice a small notice in red that reads “No Purchase Record Found! Please contact admin,” after they click the button.
Thanks!
Sorry, it was really late when I went and did the fix and I just checked back in after being out all day. LEssseee, I originally downloaded the epub format back on the 25th so original link no longer worked. I forget exactly what I did to get it onto the nook, other than plug the nook in and drag n drop, there was some software that sort of jumped in the way a few times (something from the library for downloading library books, obnoxious) but I think I basically ignored it.
When I clicked on the fix-it link, there was no notice saying no purchase, I did get an email consisting of one line…
Product download links:
and nothing else. I feel kinda funny making a kerfluffle, but I know even if it doesn’t REALLY bother me, it will bug someone else with a bad ‘ttude. I’ve spent too many years dealing with twitchy customers to let THIS get me going! 🙂
This trite statement should still suffice: “Good things come to those who wait.” At least, for this instance! 😉
If I use v2 on my Kindle directly (just moving it to the proper directory on the Kindle from the zip file) and it’s OK. I used Calibre to send it to the Kindle via the Kindle email address and there is a garbage character at the end of most sentences. I’m sure that Calibre did this.
I’m not too concerned for myself because I’ll just go back to the v2 on my PC and delete the one that is on Amazon (which is where Calibre sends it when I send it to my Kindle’s email address).
If you’re interested I’ll see if I can get it to you. It probably means getting it to my Kindle from Amazon, copying to my PC and then emailing it separately. At least I think that will work.
Weeble, Have you tried extracting just the epub from the .zip file (right click on the title) and save the file somewhere you can find it like your desktop. Then attach your Nook to your computer. If you had a Kindle you would then open the directory on your device and copy the file directly into your device directory (On the Kindle, copy the mobi file into the /documents sub-directory. If you don’t place it in /documents your Kindle won’t find it. Nook may have a similar directory structure.) I had absolutely no problems with a drag and drop from my computer desktop to my Kindle. You do need the correct cable. You could try downloading the free “Kindle for Computer” application onto your computer and then drag the mobi version onto the Kindle icon if you want to read it on your computer without resorting to Calibre.
I can thoroughly understand and commiserate. I was a proofer/editor/chief-cook-and-bottle-washer professionally. I was usually better at proofing than the boss-lady (my mother) despite her years of skill and faster typing speed. But still, everyone and anyone can miss things. I remember still a very big-name computer book…with a typo in one of the first headlines in the book. Very, very embarrassing, I’m sure, to the editing team at that publisher. It happens.
Um, and I need to email you to get my Deliberations deilvered…or perhaps deliver-ated, in this case. 😉
Please enjoy the arrival of the Great Pumpkin!
Weeble, and anybody with the same problem, e-mail me at cherryh.com: that’s the most fail-proof way. I’ll get you your file, no problem. If it weren’t for my stupid mistake about files and THEN my stupid mistake about not holding onto the WordPerfect file (I converted the only one I had), none of this back and forth conversion would have happened—it’s a royal mess. But a simple e-mail, a couple of button-pushes, and I can send you the ultimate-ultimate-ultimate correct file.
(head butt), (head butt), (head butt). I thought you had Carbonite for these sorts of disasters.
We do. But—we were going so fast trying to fix things, and Carbonite moves rather slowly, and, well, frankly—I forgot to look to see what version it had. Now, of course, it’s updated itself. (Head butt).
Deity – been there, done that. Keep banging the head until it feels good. 😉 Personally, I’ve never been able to really decide whether it’s more agonizing losing your only copy of heavily modified and finally working program code or trashing part of a production database. Not much to choose between ’em. Mucho sympathy
It’s not Calibre. It’s importing an html file into WP for editing. We’ve fixed the problem. Now…I’d really like to know if anyone is successfully getting links from the request for update. I’ve got the plugin creator trying to help me solve the problem and I’d really like to get it solved before we put up the new editions of all the books with new covers and proper formatting.
CJ, Just to let you know. I downloaded the e-book on 10/29 2:15 (WA time). I was able to re-use the link sent to me yesterday to re-download the file. A time check in the zip file shows a time of 10/30 00:41. So that’s seems to be working.
I did try the “Email download link”, and it did indeed produce a new link. For “Gold in Ardarin”, but not for Deliberations, but that’s due the fact I didn’t get it through the shop.
Regards
Ektus.
To err is human. To really FUBAR things up takes a computer.
I’m testing your links, but don’t really need a new version downloaded; everything I had from the 24th came out in beautiful condition. I downloaded to my desktop, moved a copy of the full files into Calibre for backup, and then from the desktop copied the mobi file onto my Kindle. I’ve been immersed in “Yvgenie”, but I checked “Deliberations”, the second download, and the Netwalkers quickly and did not see any glitches on the Kindle.
(My PC Nook app says it couldn’t read the epub file from Calibre, but my Nook app never seems to work quite right. Adobe reads the html but displays in varying font sizes — from large to small. This, again, could be the reader. I seldom use it. so I don’t know if you should take it seriously!)
