1. I accidentally loaded Facebook as my home page. Jane figured it out.
2. I couldn’t get the webeditor to work. Jane solved it.
3. We got wood rot in the feet of the garden arch. Jane’s fixing it.
4. We tried to use a Seagate megadrive for backup. First it wouldn’t talk. Then we got it to talk. It’s been backing up for 2 days. Jane’s running it.
5. The desktop computer is dying. Jane is trying to keep it going.
6. Jane finally gets the HP laptop reformatted for the third time.
7. It takes an Acronis backup to be sure we don’t have to reformat a fourth time.
8…do you know how many updates Windows has if you install an original Win 7 on a computer? It installs them in groups of 200. Slowly. Jane’s in charge of it.
9. Jane reformats C again. It’s not working.
10. Jane reformats C. Many updates of windows. Many. Many.
11. Did I mention our dishwasher quit having power? We went through all the breakers. Seems to be a loose wire.
12. We got Jane’s old laptop back to use as an interim desktop. Jane’s trying to get the thing to talk.
It keeps screwing up.
12 a-24a. The Intuit (accounting software) screwed up and Intuit doesn’t want to talk to us. We end up ready to file Intent.
25. Jane helps me get the taxes off the dying desktop. Between trying to keep the garden tended.
Ongoing…we’re trying to find a decent file-compare, because we have backups all over the place.
So if you wonder why Jane is behind on posting—
She deserves e-hugs.
oh yuck – I was having back-up problems with my PC, basically I had outgrown it in 3 years – made the decision to get an imac, plus 4 Tbytes of a back-up thing called La Cie with a special cable, it backs up all the time and also every 24 hours …
first benefit, no whirring fan – silent office – La Cie makes little chirrups to let you know it’s working
2nd benefit all super fast
3rd benefit no antivirus programme necessary
4th benefit as I already have a macbook, I can share my expensive software
5th benefit, I really like the new bluetooth mouse they do with the imac – some might not like the compact keyboard –
6th benefit for someone like me who designs with photoshop, the screen is gorgeous (I didn’t get the absolutely huge one), and I ordered it with 8GB ram, so it is able to tackle big files with no bother …
very happy customer – and the customer service guy gave me a more than 5% discount, and a free charger for the mouse batteries …
slight annoyance, all the bells and whistles of the newest word are not on word for mac … maybe I can see if there’s a way to find them if I search the internet ..
FYI, the La Cie *says* it will automatically delete files once it gets full, but I have not found this to be the case. The first time it filled, I got a raft of error messages, went in and cleaned it out manually, and then it resumed working. (I have it doing my Time Machine.) I just moved, it wasn’t connected to my computer for two weeks, I hooked it up, it worked one day, and now it’s making agonized clicking noises. It prevented my iMac from booting–blank screen PANIC–but as soon as I disconnected La Cie and tried again, the computer started fine. So now I have to see if this is a variation on “I’m full and have indigestion,” or if the software needs to be reloaded and start from scratch, or if it didn’t actually survive the move intact. Just so you know what’s going on if this happens to you. Also, those who dislike the Chiclets keyboard can hook up a different keyboard. The iMac recognizes my ergonomic keyboard circa 1998, which has the six-pin connector hooked up to a USB adaptor, so I’m pretty sure it will recognize anything.
Duplicate file finder: I use ‘Find Duplicates’, an open source freeware standalone exe, used to be on Geocities (that’s how old it is!)
http://code.google.com/p/findduplicates/downloads/detail?name=Find%20Duplicates.zip
Point it at one or more directories (even root of a disk), set to include or exclude subdirectories, and set it away. It does one pass finding all files to compare, then compares same size files (starting with the largest) and reports identical files, then allows you to select files (individually, by directory or automatically) for deletion (or moving) if you wish. It is a small tool specifically for finding duplicate files, not for identifying which files are more recent etc – but great if you’ve done lots of random backup copies and want to purge the duplicates.
