…from about 8am until about 3pm, local. Not one e-mail, Comment, tweet, or other contact from the outside. I began figuring maybe I had screwed my incoming mail. But spam was arriving, though less than the usual 20 an hour.
Paranoia set in. I began to think maybe my recent troubles with that pseudo reg-cleaner had screwed my account. I started trying System Restore. This never ends well—but at least it doesn’t end badly. The simple truth is I have had System Restore as an option since around, oh, 2000, 2004, something like that. And I must have tried it 20-30 times over those years, and the answer is always the same: Cannot Restore. I’ve had system crashes. Can I restore? Never. I create a Restore Point an hour ago—can I restore to it? Nope. System Restore is a Microsoft Myth. It doesn’t exist. It never has existed. It never will exist. Don’t bet the farm on it.
Then, after 5 tries at different restore points including 3 made this morning, I gave up.
Then I got a tweet. And an e-mail. Weird.
Either it jarred something loose on successive reboots, or it was just coincidence. You know that the Universe was created at 20 minutes after the hour, and this is why, wherever people gather in bars and at parties, a silence automatically falls at 20 after the hour. It’s also the minute at which the household cat will spot goblins and take after them. And at 21 after the hour, noise resumes, and the goblins vanish.
It was like that. Somewhere an alternate universe was created, I expect, and for a while we had goblins.
When that happens here, it usually means that our ISP is suffering from a spam attack.
Ahhhh. Interesting….nope, however: I checked our server, no big mail queue. Just a weird day. Goblins, I tell you.
Ahhhh, System restore! Has NEVER worked for me. A couple of days to re-install is the only thing that works.
No emails? I blame it on the very large ISP I use that will sometimes go into snail mode and just sit there and hum to itself.
I tried to comment and was just about done when I
(once again) dragged my thumb across the touch pad and recycled everything leaving no comment to
finish. I slouched off mumbling.
I use system restore all the time,I’ve seen some
nasty comments about it on the geekyguys forums
so worried for a while. It was a saving grace as
I careened thru dangerous areas while learning
what this, those and them does when you click on it,those and them
Ah,I got sidetracked! I just experienced the BLUE
SCREEN OF DEATH. After I rebooted Microsoft galloped to the rescue with a list of todos(that
naturally appear elsewhere, just not on MY poor
computer). The last fix that Microsoft suggested
was ….wait…..system restore!
I’ve used restore very successfully many times in the past…Vista, naturally, has changed all that. In trying to get this new machine set up, I did three different restores. Every time, the restore was successful…but every time it put a NEW default “documents” folder into my user file tree. And it won’t let you ditch these gems …which wasn’t there at all in the initial installation. Yet another reason take my computer down and bring it back up clean on Win7.
I have no doubt that evil things are growing in
places I have yet to discover within the dire
machine!!
MEANWHILE,
The move to Missoula has begun,a whirling dervish
did a spin in the bedroom and then left with 5
boxes of books. She shook her head as she took in
the sight of 5 more stuffed bookcases in the
living groom. Sunday will be interesting,it’s
wild cat day. Prayer is definitely in order.
OOOoooo. The Great Missoula Transit. I hope you’re going to love it: Missoula has a great view of the hills, and is a very pleasant town. You’re also going to be in the middle of a modern communications network.
Which is a good thing.
I’m looking forward to it! I was holding up the
whole move when my piglet turned into pneumonia. So glad that we are finally moving
forward again!!!!
Not to mention MISCON, whch hopefully I won’t sleep past making my flight this year. =)
With regard to Restore not working that has happened to me several times in the past on different XP/Vista systems.
However if I rebooted into Safe mode and then applied Restore it allways would work.
Thank you for that suggestion! And welcome in!
i swear the more i work with my mac the more i detest windoz in any incarnation. microsoft does NOT work anywhere near as advertised! we have more windoz machines to my one mac in the household but with mac being written on a unix base not only is it so much more secure but it works so much better. i just hate the bigger price tag of the macs.
D
But the price tag is the only drawback I can find, Dee. I have been using Apple in one form or another off and on practically since their inception. Used a version of pages for a ton of art history stuff back in the late 80’s, early 90’s with nary a problem.
Does anyone remember Apple Bonkers?
PS Is the unicorn your work?
smartcat, yeah, the price of the macs suck BUT i have been stress free from op sys issues for over a year! amazing! AND i don’t have to deal with reg cleaners, disk defrag, virus sw, and all the other optimization stuff hubby is so fond of! i do run windoze xp on a virtual machine since there are a few programs i need that aren’t mac based. i use pages a bit but most of my stuff is in word and i use the avery add in alot with labels.
as for the unicorn – it’s my modification of a piece of clipart that i think started out as an allicorn ;P my retail biz name is unicorn’s creations studio and i designed this unicorn from the original clip art for my logo. i can’t draw to save my life ;P
