We’re going to be rainy for the next few days: the ice sheet over the pond has melted about halfway, and we were able to see the koi for the first time in a couple of months. I can report that Maddy (the silver) and either Ari or Kenpachi were quietly finning along, moving slightly. We don’t want them to wake up all the way: it’s still cold; but we were glad to see our little friends.

I finally got my feet under me today on the rink: we had to dodge tv cameras as the local station sought film footage for the evening news, but I felt good, and actually solid, for the first time in weeks. For me, for my point of balance, it’s directly under the ankle-bones when skating forward; a half inch behind is unstable, ditto a half inch in front; dunno how it is in hockey skates. But on figure blades, your weight is just in front of (but not on!) your heel, and knees bent—leaning against the front of your boot. And hitting that sweet spot is easy, but staying in it can be delicate, for some peculiar reason. Today, it was just there. Beautiful. I had fun skating today for the first time in weeks. And of course tonight they’re securing our locker room, which we’re lending to the pros for the Nationals; and we brought home all our gear, just to have less Stuff in the locker room. The whole place will lock down under security for their practices—drat! We’ve had fun with the visiting pros sharing our ice, but you can’t blame them. This is an Olympic year, and the security level is way up. We could skate tomorrow, maybe Thursday, but it’s hard getting kitted up in the rink restroom. Too many pieces and no place to sit.
