Yep. It could be forming planets. In fact—it’s probably forming planets.

Here’s your link—no commercials. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=083fSbguKh8
FYI- you can usually embed the code directly into your site so that you don’t invite readers to leave the site and go… away:) also- when you have things from youtube etc, embedded.. it benefits your SEO/ ranking information:
embed code:) I know it works via WP blog template- not sure that it would work through comments section

Fascinating — and beautiful photos thrown in for good measure!
(The attribute name-value pair for a link that brings up a new tab or window in a link is, target=”_blank” , in which the underscore is required. I’ll have to check if they’ve officially extended it for a tab versus a window. Officially, I think you’re now supposed to add, rel=”external” too.)
Hearing of the spiral arms had me thinking, Dancing Star or Skating Star, which might make for a fun title or two. Can’t recall if Dancing Star has been used, but it sparks some memory.
Why not? The fundamental processes involved, gravity & angular momentum, would not be intrinsically different for the condensation of a star and a galaxy.
Has anybody ever mentioned “galaxyzoo.org”?
Wouldn’t you love to be around just to see how this one ‘works out’ in the future? Wow. How fantastic!
Not sure where to post this, so figured that this is as good a spot as any: http://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2011/1104/520-day-mission-to-Mars-completed-on-Earth#disqus_thread
It’s a short article about an experiment meant to mimic the isolation of a trip to Mars. I found this part at the very end a bit telling. I’m pondering exactly what “cultural gaps” there are between Russia and Canada:
The organizers said they had considered some female candidates for the experiment, but left them out for various reasons. They denied that they deliberately had formed an all-man crew because of the failure of a similar simulation in the past.
The 1999-2000 experiment ended in acrimony after a Canadian woman complained of being forcibly kissed by a Russian team captain following a fist fight between two Russian crew members that left blood splattered on the walls. Russian officials downplayed the incidents, attributing them to cultural gaps and stress.
CJ,
If you click on the EMBED link on YouTube it will give you the code you need to embed the video so it shows up on the blog. It offers you several options, including embed “Old Style” which I’ve found sometimes works better.
To make it work you have to pick your spot where you want it, and then click on the HTML tag and paste the code there. If you want help, or lessons, let me know, I’d be happy to show you how to do it.
Word Press won’t let you embed video in a comment.

Mmmm. I’ll have to try that.
If you want help, feel free to contact me. I’m fairly good with Word Press and HTML. If you need to talk my phone number is on the about page of my website.

sorry- I would have left more specific info had I known you weren’t already aware about things like the embed code etc. I really do like WP, it is more powerful than I would have expected for a template based system- and some of the templates are pretty impressive:)
I don’t know about bytesforall though… I would imagine there is some similarity between the public domain/open source based programs:)

Hmm, just my opinion, but I’d think any truly long-term mission, Mars or further, *requires* a mixed crew, preferably 50-50 M/F, with married and single, and allowing for same-sex couples. If you don’t do that, you’re going to short-circuit basic human drives and cause undue stresses and behaviors of other kinds. Don’t provide the naturally desired outlets, and you get whatever that person might not otherwise accept, or inappropriate substitutes like aggression and jealousy and stresses. Note in there, I did say, a certain percentage will opt for same-sex pairing first, and others will if there’s no better outlet. But put someone into an environment where he/she has no other choice, and you are going to end up with some very unhappy people dealing with feelings they might not otherwise want or act on, and they may have guilt or anger or shame because their own moral code says they shouldn’t do that.
And heck, that’s just the first problem I think of by not having as mixed a crew as possible. If they’re isolated for months or years, or if it might take months or years more than expected before contact back with Earth, then they need the broadest possible range to give the best chances for survival and for, well, growing a healthy colony in the meantime. Because hey, somebody’s gonna get, ah, enthusiastic, shall we say, and start makin’ babies. It happens under stress. It’s a way to deal with the stress.
Er, and I hope I didn’t open my big mouth and start a bar fight. Would prefer not to have dockside break out in, ah, “docks refitting.” 😉 Sorry, captain, ma’am, if I’ve caused a bother by posting an opinion some might find controversial.
