An Ilisidi story.
I can’t do it immediately. Right now I’m at a delicate spot near the end of the current book!
But one of these weeks!
So we will get this done!
An Ilisidi story.

Oh dear. I started writing down story ideas, seeds, in the Chanur / Compact space, and…there are several there. They are specific to hani, maven, stsho. I reached a stopping point, but there’s a lot there.
And it’s still going. These are multiple seeds, not connected (as yet). Over a page. Uh….
There are always the twenty odd seeds in Hunter of Worlds, and a couple in Hestia. Please, no more like Port Eternity. I wept all night after reading that.
Awwww.
I must admit that Zoloft really helped. The story seemed very true to life at the time.
Ilisidi or Geigi or Algini
I liked Port Eternity and Voyager in Night, though they were both more unusual or experimental. It’s been long time since I’ve read either.
I decided I should quit while I was ahead, coming up with ideas. These ended up all being Chanur or Compact ideas; not all hank, either.
There was also an idea that was too shiny to give away. It looked like it wanted to stick to another idea or two, so I’m going to see what happens when they do.
…Darn cat, my keyboard is not a highway…
You all are giving me ideas. Indeed.
I’d like a story about Eversnow. Seeding that melting snowball with whales or the like.
Stimsuits, as found in Heavy Time, have been invented.

Boy, you’re right on that one. It’s fascinating to find oneself living in the future finally (even if fusion, better batteries and cheap solar panels haven’t quite reached their “in ten years, we will almost certainly have….”).
Wow, an Ilisidi story would be fantastic! This series’ scope and the fact that you are writing short stories to accompany it have made it my all time favorite. And the fact that you are taking suggestions on these short stories is too good to be true!!If I could have some short story wishes granted they would be:
1. Ilisidi’s (supposed) involvement in her son’s death and Tabini’s rise to power
2. Banichi and the operation that separated him from his first partner
3. Algini’s background and previous function in the guild leading up to partnership with Tano
4. A glimpse into the private life of Bren and Jago, a weekend trip maybe, lol
MANY thanks to CJ for all your hard work and keeping me hanging for more, I can’t wait for the next book!
I can vote for these.
Heretofore, Bren and Jago have mostly been a team facing a “situation” which focused their intentions. Given our existing “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” difficulties with how our brains are wired [says the Aspie 😉 ] when “at liberty” there must be some ways in which the ways human and atevi brains are wired that come to the fore.
Just remember that Atava boundaries are not delineated by fences. There might be a fence to protect garden crops or to contain Mecheta.
Also, be careful what your write about Ilisidi – she can be a very good ally but a really dangerous foe.
You could always try a rousing spacer bar brawl, with whatever seems most exciting and plot/char twisty for the results.
Hey, I may not go to pubs or bars often (and don’t fight when I do) but heh, doesn’t mean it can’t make a fine scene for a story, with curioser and curioser results for the participants.
I claim early influence by the K-7 bar scenes….

What, did someone say something about short story suggestions? (Alliteration totally accidental, I swear.) I would really like to see what has changed about Mospheiran culture, politics, economy now that atevi have mostly reached technological parity and the sea change in the relationship brought about by the return of the ship and Bren’s actions. I would also like to see more of how atevi see “normal” human life (as opposed to ship life). We get tantalizing hints about e.g. atevi finding human grid-cities indicative of a very alien mentality and incomprehensible aesthetic…
I for one would like to see more in that vein and would buy a Closed Circle story that had a little bit of that focus.
Signy Mallory’s teen/early Military/Fleet years… I would love to read more of her history and how she came to have the personal characteristics she does.
Yeah! Us Union-Alliance/Company Wars fanatics have been badly underserved in recent years! An update would be nice, there are so many dangling threads in that fertile (star)field, if I may mix my metaphors.
Hardly a short story topic, but I’d like to read about the founding of Pell Station and discovery of the Downers.
What happened at/to Beta Station in 2163?
The story of ECS11 Mercury’s evacuation of Glory Station sounds fascinating.
Discovery and initial settlement of Cyteen (discovery of rejuve!).
The upheaval surrounding the arrival of the first FTL ship at a star station.
I could go on… 😀
In our Village in the Old Country.
ve haf a saying: Ve (good Orthodox Christians) say, “Love your neighbour, but build a fence!”
Actually it is a quote from Peter Ustinov. And all the better for it.
As we interpret cultures, I am so overwhelmed by your Panel Room item about the Real Romans. As a fan of Lindsay Davis I do really appreciate someone taking the trouble to read the graffiti. And the original sources too.
Unfortunately I have never owned a television, so I have no idea what nonsense is purveyed these days. Should one condemn Wikipedia as a “television channel”? It is a question we are avoiding in academic circles. death by compromise.
Love your work, awaiting Foreigner 14 and 15.
Best of everything.
I’m curious about the meshing of things on the station. I keep remembering the Atevi shuttle pilot who reported to Banichi and Bren in Precurser. He spoke about their interaction with the human workers, and (I seem to recall) suggested that they (the Atevi) sometimes covered for the humans if they were not on shift exactly on time.
Also, Jace’s guards. They must have some interesting stories to tell! I wonder what they think of all this that’s been going on for the last few years.
And let us not forget Cajerie’s human playmates. I wonder what they (or their parents) might have written down in a journal or blog about the changes from living on the first station to coming to the Atevi station. There must be so many differences — while still feeling much the same.
In looking this over I find I have followed the “felicitous three” pattern. It was not intentional, but is very amusing.
Liking the Alliance/Union suggestions, of course. (And Walt, your suggestions were different from mine; on the same track with some, though.)
We get from Merchanter’s Luck a line about how some stations (plural) and routes had been abandoned or evacuated during the war and there was talk, post-war, of reopening those routes. Seems like there’s story material there.
I took from what sparse bits we learn of human intentions around what happened to Tully’s ship in the Chanur books, that humans, probably Sol, were trying to expand to gain a foothold away from Alliance and Union. That expansion could have a lot to it, in stories.
We never did know what, precisely, Tully’s ship was. I took that they may’ve been civilian, rather than military, but I think that was implied, rather than directly stated.
Something unclear to me: I get the impression that initial exploration, finding jump points and suitable stars for stations or (rarely) a habitable world, is a dicey business. So perhaps a story of how they do that would fill in a gap. (Though we get a little, I think, from Tripoint, which I haven’t reread in a while.)
Meanwhile, we learned in the Chanur books that some hani, e.g. Chur, can develop the ability to function in jump. Heh. Could be interesting for future hani stories. — And I think we get the suggestion somewhere, can’t recall where, that it might, maybe, be possible for a few humans to develop the ability.
Heheheh, if we’re getting you excited for other novels, that’s great. :seesaw:
(I’ve been writing in various ideas, still skipping among them round robin, which must be the oddest writing strategem ever. — So I’m still early in my reread of Merchanter’s Luck. Allison is still aboard Dublin Again before they jump to Pell the first time, not yet on Lucy. I have no idea what reread this will be, beyond three, but it’s been years now since I last reread it. Really enjoying.)
So it seems does Hallan Meras. 😉
Would swoon if we ever got another Morgaine/Vanye foray. There were so many bits in Exile’s Gate (Morgaine’s backstory, the M/V relationship) that I always revisit and just want more of. 😉 Not to mention the final cliffhanger!
