This short story is (literally) Bren’s first few days on the job. It wanted to be written. Amazing how late in the series I had to be to know how those days would have gone.
NOW I need to get to that next Bren book, and get it done, while I still have all the pieces in my head. THen…I think I am starting to have a non-Bren book nudging me, but I have to think about this, and I won’t let myself think until I have this book really rolling…
Plus—I think your letters have shaken some things loose. Both my editor and my agent are working on the e-book problem.
OH YES!
Bwahahaha! I heard it last night and it’s wunnerful! Like a lot of you, I’ve been waiting a long time for this one! Been pushing hard since we started CC for just such a story. Personally…I want it to grow into a whole BOOK!
All the news is exciting. We can get our Bren fix early, and a young Bren at that. A whole book, Jane. Wouldn’t that be excellent, Closed Circle exclusive. No contract needed. After the non-Foreigner book of course. Aiji CJ may have another opinion. 🙂 lol
Thanks for pushing, Jane!!!!
…and I think for it to grow into a whole book would be a wonderful idea! Think you could push that idea, too?! We’ll back you…just saying…
I don’t think we could do a CC exclusive…the shorts are one thing, an entire novel is something else. But even if she just did vignettes…like the first meeting with B&J? Now wouldn’t THAT be fun?
I keep thinking (and hoping to do it myself when the final backlog book is up) that one of the things ebooks allows is exactly that: the vignettes that don’t necessarily coalesce into a novel and aren’t quite a short story either…just cool moments in the life of characters we’ve grown to love. They can provide really cool insights into the novels themselves.
Anyway…just to let you know, we are thinking of new ways to entertain all you folks!!!!
“the first meeting with B&J?”
—that IS sort of on the list of to-dos.
Protector (14) — Amazon now shows the cover art for the hardcover but not yet for the ebook Kindle edition. They show delivery for the hardcover pre-order as April 2. Good thing I checked on the Kindle ebook pre-order. They somehow dropped it. So I’ve pre-ordered it again. So in two months, hurray! I’ll get both as intended.
I’ve often wondered whether B & J met Bren at the airport on his first trip to the mainland, or whether he met them later. I’ll look forward to finding out when it is that story’s turn to be told. Now we know it is on the To-Do list!
Glad to hear that there is movement on the ebooks. My challenge is finding non-Amazon sources. Closed Circle helps here, of course.
Ooooh, love the gravatar for your nom de plume. 😉
i’d pony up for bite size pieces of Bren and co.
actually, I’ve had a burning curiosity of the wider universe to. Stuff from Earth of the Humans, etc to
I enjoyed Deliberations last night, most interesting Looking forward to more someday (Bren’s enrolement etc?) and of course to Peacemaker.
Thanks and good luck with your work.
As did I this morning…
SPOILER ALERT

.
I greatly enjoyed the end where Ilisidi “caught her
tall, handsome grandson by the elbow,” … and said “Let us confound our enemies, and our allies— who are, between the two of us, one and the
same.”
So rare to see her show anything we humans would consider warmth!
For all her curmudgeonliness, she is one of my favorite characters.
I want to grow up to be Illisidi, but I am not so canny as she… too bad for me!
I am new to the e-books concept. If you publish the Bren short story in e-format, how does one obtain a copy? Could I read it on my PC?
Yes Catlady, you can definitely read e books on your PC.
When I downloaded Deliberations, it came in 3 formats one of which was PDF which almost all computers can already read.
Wikipedia says: “some of the major book retailers and multiple third-party developers offer free (and in some third-party cases, premium paid) e-Reader applications for the Mac and PC desktops as well as for Android, Blackberry, iPad, iPhone and Palm OS devices to allow the reading of eBooks and other documents independently of dedicated e-book devices”
Free E-book programs include Calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/
