Actually it’s really curtains.
My room is a wasteland in the decor department. I absolutely refuse to obscure the view from my window with curtains.
But I had an inspiration. I’m getting a double rod for each window, the one I use and the one above my bed that shares a lovely view of the neighbor’s bedroom window (brilliant, builders!) and which has to be kept shaded. A double rod, you may know, has two rods, one for hanging a drape and the other for hanging a sheer.
I’ve ordered two pretty 72″ table runners, the sort that have a nice point and tassel.
I’m going to get some (probably) white sheers at Lowes and cut them fairly short. The window with the blinds gets a full sheer. The other gets only decorative short token fluff at the sides.
I’m cutting the two table runners in two halves. I’m seaming the top so it won’t ravel, and I’m hanging those flat, straight hangings over the sheers as the official drape. It’s a rich alien brocadelike wandering pattern, in pale brown and gold…just sort of like silly string in shiny fabric. And that will give me the finished look, along with the new cabinet that will hold all my working items, from screen-cleaner to notebook and keep my kitty guests (who get over-excited by our garden kitty visitors) from knocking everything down and throwing things in the floor.
I’ll let you know how this works. But 18.99 for a table runner beats what they want for drapes. And may look good, too.
It sounds like you have solved your kitty problems with the new cabinet. What did you decide on? I am soooooo tired of waking early morning to hear the kittehs gleefully knocking things off shelves so I will get up and feed them. It would also be nice to show off a least a few of my teapots without their being toy fodder.
You have inspired me! The only window curtain I want or need is for the one over my computer desk which faces south and gets way too hot when the sun comes out. I’m trying out a peacock shawl that Proge gave me for Christmas. Like you I was shocked at the price of curtains! If I like the effect I will buy two when I am in town next week.
I have a Hammacher-Schlemmer Core Trainer on order. There is no way I am going to go out walking in this weather! It’s been so slippery that Proge is bringing wood in through his studio, rather than risk his life on the deck!
I wish I could send you some of our snow; we’re tired of winter!
What I ordered was a splurge, but a bargain the way most of these things are priced. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EANQJ8K/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It’s a 16 drawer fairly rough-hewn apothecary chest, that will effectively become the window sill and kitty-perch beside my chair—which lets me have a place for everything that clutters up my workspace and everything in its place. I really don’t own any bedroom furniture except a couple of inexpensive wicker flat-pack chests and a bed/mattress that sits directly on the floor; and my little working chair. No curtains, not real spiff. It’s all college-dorm stuff…until this. But I’m so tired of searching amid the clutter for a pen that works or for a notebook I know is in here somewhere.
THis is the runner I’m cutting in half to form a ‘drape’ to frame the window.

is it going to be safely out of the reach of the claws of the 4-legged critters? It’s one reason I haven’t put up drapes in my windows is that they tend to think of them as transport devices to elevated places in the room….
Very nice on both fronts! One hopes the feline contingent will appreciate the efforts made on their behalf and will quit baptizing your phone with coffee. No matter what flavor you get, window treatments (even from Lowe’s) are insanely expensive.
I had to put up a second Roman shade inside our big picture window, because the bamboo slat shades were light screening only; if you came to the front door, you could see straight in. We have yard wide jalousies on both sides, but that was more easily handled. Krylon makes a spray-on frosting for glass. I cracked the louvers, made sure they were clean, and applied a couple of coats. Voila! Light comes in, but unless we actually open the louvers, no one is peering in them.

I hate myself for saying this but…
If you have a problem with curtains perhaps you should pull yourself together?
Just couldn’t resist…
Lol—oh, you should be ashamed. 😉
LOL, Apf. :snicker: — The suggestion of the table runners is much appreciated, though I can’t sew.
Some time back, in a fit of uncharacteristic handyman enthusiasm, I bought new blinds to replace my old ones, much abused by the feline contingent, current and previous, who would :: paw, paw, paw :: to get into the window. The blinds were cut to size, which I think/hope was done properly by the Lowe’s / Home Depot assistant. But in the time between then and when I looked at them to put them up…I did not think to put any markings on the packages to say which set went to which room. Oh, drat. (But maybe I’ll remember if I ever do it again.)
A project this summer will be to put those up. And then I’ll want better curtains than the “temporary” curtains which became permanent. They are adequate, but only just. I don’t have the budget for much, so anything will be one room at a time.
As it looks like I think my budget will (sort of) hold this year, so that I’m staying and not moving (not yet anyway), I think this and other things are due. — A small plumbing repair is definitely in order. (The pipe’s turned off, but a valve and a joint need to be replaced.) Other repairs, not yet. Eventually. — By then, maybe my income and budget will be a bit better.
Flat sheets can be easily made into pretty decent curtains and they come in all kinds of colors and patterns. Look for ones on sale; you might be able to find some at a thrift store, too. I sewed mine, but you could also use fabric glue. I have used “Unique Stitch” glue on my (rubbery-style) raincoat when the seams started opening up, and it worked very well, even with movement and rain. I think I bought the glue at a fabric/craft store like Joann’s or Hobby Lobby, but it might also be available at Wal-Mart or Target or even a grocery store.
Glad to hear that your budget situation is looking better!
You do realize that we expect pictures?
I’m awake, can’t sleep, and don’t quite want to write right now.
I looked at my queue of unwatched videos and nothing grabs me. I looked in my Kindle app and i’m going to read something, though not sure which yet. Yes, the malaise or ennui is there too. Despite that there are many good choices, fiction and fact.
And i’m in the mood to reread a CJC title but don’t want to get back out of bed, disturb the two cats, and hunt for one of the books.
So…I went to Amazon and to several backlist Cherryh titles and clicked the links for “I’d like to read this on Kindle.” Those links are back. I’ve clicked them before. No idea if they check for duplicates or are cumulative, or how it might help speed the path to more ebook titles, but it’s still worth a shot. — I’m not choosy. Kindle and other formats, the more the merrier! But i’d love to see more backlist titles available again. Not only for CJ, but for other authors.
Gosh, my copies of those 80’s titles are no longer so new, but still favorites. I reread CJ’s books. I don’t often reread other authors, but a few favorites.
I’ll see what gets my eye this time from those Kindle and Closed Circle titles.
I moved into the place I’m living in 13 years ago. At that time Wal-mart had this plastic lace on a wide roll that people could use for table cloths I got some and used them for “sheer” window curtains. They look nice and afford some privacy. They also had heavy clear plastic on rolls — I got two pieces of that — one length for when my dining table had the leaf in (seats 6) and one when the leaf was out (seats 4). Since “no” in Kitteh means “Not while I’m looking,” it was the simplest solution to kitties getting cat hair on the table cloth I made out of upholstery fabric and some bullion fringe.
You gave me a scare – Curtains is the name of the novel where Hercule Periot dies.
Oh,me, oh, no, No such intention!
