We’d like to know if this is a problem for others.
If you are using Win8, have you tried to buy from us? Was the download ok?
If you haven’t and do have Win8, would you mind going over and doing one of our free downloads or samples to test it?

Won’t have access to my Win8 for few days but what I have noticed is that things that don’t work via the Win8 interface do work if you access the old windows desktop which is still available on Win8. Not an expert but it might help with download issues.
I would be willing to try this out, if I knew where to find the free downloads.
However I do think it is more of a problem with the “Charms” version of Internet Explorer. So downloading via browsers running in the desktop should present no problems.
Per my previous comment. Chose a free download (in the desktop) got the email link and downloaded fine on windows 8.
I use Windows 8, but haven’t bought from you since I upgraded. However, requesting the freebies on a different email address has worked fine (I use Outlook for email and Firefox for browser, and do everything within the desktop environment of Windows 8).
I’m happy to run more experiments, but it would help to know a bit more detail: which browser is the problem occurring with, is it in the desktop environment or the “Modern” one.
Also: does it work if the customer tries a different browser?
Joe, thank you: the site in question is our commercial e-book wing: http://www.closed-circle.net
Arkessian, That’s so. Firefox is my own browser, IE only if pressed by a contact that requires it.
We try to keep up with things: we get people on Closed Circle who really have never done anything remotely computerish, who now have tablets or readers, don’t know what ‘unzip’ means, and who aren’t sure which version of the file they need or how to install it on their device: we try to cover everything in the instructions, which most, bless them, read, but there are some months it seems there are three new devices and somebody’s bought somebody and then a new OS…waaak.
I requested download link for Lynn Abbey’s short stories from closed circle, got link in email, downloaded file. Everything worked fine.
I’m using Windows 8, chrome browser. If you know what browser your customer was attempting to use, or specifically what error occurred, I’d be happy to troubleshoot by duplicating the conditions here.
I’m using Windows 8 with Internet Explorer. I just purchased and downloaded the Foreigner short story to my laptop with no difficulties.
I’m getting the impression W8 will go down as another Vista moment. It just seems a serious mistake to try to merge a small-sized touch-screen I/F with a “traditional” PARC large-screen mouse I/F. It should have been forked!
I like it a lot — especially the File History facility which makes data backup something I needn’t worry about any more. Admittedly, I use it in “Desktop” screen/mouse mode exclusively.
Paul, I don’t like the metro ui much but Windows 8 is what I’ve been waiting for. It got me back from all my experiments with Ubuntu and OpenSuse and other Linux distributions. Windows 8 is powerful, fast, it comes with an excellent task manager so you can really see what is going on, and it includes hypervisor so you can do virtual machines.
BTW Vista was not totally bad…it’s just that they released it before it was done, then when they had the bugs fixed they had to call it Windows 7 just to escape the stigma they had created. Not to mention that gave them an excuse not to provide it to the millions of Vista users, instead charging them some more money to get a system that worked.
Hypervisor is really useful to techie users like me.
I don’t much like the “kitchen-sink” world-wide Linux distros either. Every package comes with its own (potential) flaws. [Update: a process to take out old bugs and put in new ones.] And I have no need of many of the packages. The point about Linux is that I can build my own from scratch with just what I need, my decisions about what is a dependency. Can’t do that with either the major distros nor Windows, nor especially Mac-OS! [OK, I admit keeping up with Firefox’s release cycle is a pita, if I were to play that game. Again, my decision!]
Hypervisors are good. I used to run IBM mainframes with VM in my profession. That’s a goal. Oh, right! The street bully is making hardware mfrs build all their stuff so you can’t load your own hypervisor! Such is monopolistic practice.
@cwg I agree about Vista & Win7.
They are now working on Windows ‘Blue’, which will be an improved version of Win8. It will no doubt have an option to boot directly to the desktop, the Start menu back, a few tweaks, and a slightly different look. Voila! Windows 9 (or whatever), and everyone will be falling over themselves to say how wonderful it is. And all those people who bought new machines with Win8 pre-installed will have to pay to upgrade.
As for task managers, I use Process Explorer from Windows Sysinternals. It’s intended for programmers and has a vast amount of useful information, and excellent features. I’ve made it my default task manager.
@GreenWyvern, I hope you are wrong about that Win 9 thing, but it sounds way to possible for me to be comfortable…
I didn’t buy a W8 machine I paid $40 for each of my 3 W7 ones after flying the beta for a while. I’ve found the W8 task manager to be enough for my needs; the desktop sans start button is another story, and I added on Classic Shell for that.
CJ, sorry we hijacked the thread… I hope it was interesting and useful. I also hope your customer was able to get the downloads!
