This was an Interesting Evening: Jane in the ER…

…from trimming a plant. It seems everything about euphorbias (spurge) is poisonous. She had trimmed the euphorbia we brought in, and began having eye pain. A fast check of the internet turned up “sap in the eye: blindness,” seeds–death. Fumes off the living plant can be harmful to the eyes. Etc. We called OSG for [...]

Frost on the roofs in Spokane. Freeze this coming Sunday.

Breakfast on the patio was nippy this morning. The pond is frothing up islands of white foam—lest you think picaresque, it’s dead bacteria, dying off from the chill, as the summer bacteria give up. The koi were all resting deep this morning, not interested in food. I didn’t test the temperature: I doubt it’s 60, [...]

I smelled something I’ve never smelled before, and it was wonderful…

Pruning the apple tree, I carried the clippings to a bin, and got a close smell of them. It was apples. It was the way good apples smell compounded with the smell of new leaves. If I could have gotten that scent into a bottle, I would’ve. I now vow the yard will never be [...]

the virtues of mulch…

yep, it’s virtuous. Cedar mulch is acidic. It can help convert alkaline water (most city water is) into water much nicer to roses, rhodies, evergreens, and most flowers. I’ve observed that many of the plants that we call weeds actually thrive in city water, and don’t like cedar mulch. Pecan hulls, if you’re in the [...]

Saving money in 5 gallon pots…

This thread is about what YOU can do, even in an apartment, to either relieve your budget or green the planet: doing both at the same time…

Tomatos, strawberries, or squash—at about a dollar per yellow squash or zucchini (ridiculous!) you can do nicely with this. Also cucumbers. A patio planter. You need: a 5 [...]

Rain, rain and more rain…

It’s a case of animals starting to pair up in Spokane. If anybody’s building an ark, I have yet to hear it, but we’re more than soggy. I don’t think I’ve seen such a spate of rainy weather since we’ve been here. And our stripped front lawn? We’re in trouble. Our neighbor’s weeds are proliferating [...]

Breakfast in the rain…

Of the many pleasures of our garden, the gentle NW spring days are one of the greatest. It rains…but this morning we threw towels onto the fabric seats of our patio set and had breakfast (softboiled egg in spaceman-with-helmet egg cup) on our flower plates with our little fat-kitteh salt shaker and beverage of our [...]

The wonderful rain suit…

Any of you who garden or work in the yard, pen, or camp in the woods, lakeshore, or beach—let me tell you the wonders of a two piece rain suit, which you can find in the hunter’s section of Walmart, Cabelo’s, or any such place. I wear a size 14, women’s clothes, and find a [...]
