I wonder if some kind people who have time and can lay hands on certain books would scan in some maps from the various series: these are a reasonable thing to have as a feature on Wave, so people have access to the maps, since Kindle doesn’t render graphics. If you’d scan at 300 dpi, and size it for full page display, so the words are legible? I think I’m right. But whatever would look good…
An idea…maps…

So, there is indeed a nice centre-spread map in the Company War book (about A3 size so should scan nicely, I’m not sure what that is in US sizes!) It’s simply labeled “CJ Cherryh’s Universe” and is different to the Compact Space map in the Chanur books. I’ll scan it tomorrow night, time permitting.
Looks like WOL has taken care of many others (good job!). I’ll try to check if any more are outstanding tomorrow too (I have pretty much all CJ’s books). I know the Merovingen series has several maps as I just read them all – CJ, are those of interest?
US-common 8-1/2 by 11 inches is roughly the same as A4 (it’s also called ‘A-size’). B-size is the next larger, it’s 11 by 17 inches, which I think would make it kind of like A3.
There are now maps in the Map Room. Any additions you all want to do will be gratefully loaded. Merovingen is welcome: those were a real bear to draw…Once upon a time there was a whole city map of Merovingen.
One of my personal favorite books with a map is Gate of Ivrel.
I drew that map. Which is quite detailed.
Coffee got spilled on it.
I drew it again.
Water got spilled on it. Since I lived alone at the time, I was at fault in both instances.
A third time, I drew that map, and was so paranoid I set it far over against my little office wall, so that NOTHING could happen to it. Understand, it sat on the floor because I had no furniture in this cubbyhole of an office except my desk. And a few pictures on the walls.
I had a woman who came in to clean once a week.
For the first time in known history she got the notion to clean my hanging pictures. She Windexed the pictures on my office wall. The Windex ran down, dripped onto the map—and produced big blurry runs.
What you see in Gate was the FOURTH map.
Oh no! Fate was definitely conspiring against you! Score one for determination, I probably would have said, “Fine! no maps for you!” to my book. 🙂
I’ve scanned the following maps and uploaded them to Mediafire (I don’t have a blog to upload to) – links are below. It was fun looking back at some of these! CJ, let me know if it’s better for me to email them to you direct.
Company Wars (boardgame) – it would be interesting to know how this fits with the map of Compact Space. I assume it sits off to the right, where “Human” is indicated in the Compact map, but placing the maps together like that would put Sol closest to Knnn space, and Fargone out on the opposite side of Sol. Is that right, or are the maps oriented differently? http://www.mediafire.com/i/?3wcou5qqnmc5p7m
Angel With The Sword – these are different versions to the ones in the other Merovingen books (no artist is credited) http://www.mediafire.com/?8ndgvwril7fvjvu
Merovingen Nights – these are credited to Pat Tobin (they’re scanned from a paperback edition so aren’t as crisp as the Angel maps). http://www.mediafire.com/?cjoayjlhkm6lwsa
Brothers Of Earth – again, from a paperback edition so not too crisp! http://www.mediafire.com/i/?bo90b9nxr9gp76r
The Paladin – again, from a paperback edition. http://www.mediafire.com/i/?eq43ngot7rwvbos
Enjoy!
Oh, I just remembered seeing a web page years ago where someone had created a 3D map of all the stars mentioned in CJ’s work, and managed to dig out a link – http://www.solstation.com/cjc-maps.htm
The map applet didn’t seem to work in Internet Explorer, but it ran fine in Chrome (after installing Java).
There’s also a page listing the stars, most of which have a page giving key details like the star’s chronology. Great fun clicking through and reading how things from the different books fit together!
After fixing up both my server and router settings, I have managed to make available a copy of the Ivrel map from Jane’s Fancheristics Gate of Ivrel Vol. 1. It’s from the second page, and it took a while to erase all her text around the map. I also uploaded the original scan, in case you want to fix anything I messed up on.
It’s at http://pholynyk.ca/~cherryh/ It’s a read-only page, and no login… 🙂
I also have a large-print and the 1976 Daw #188 version coming from the library, just to see if the maps, if present, might be different.
Now to go read some Gimp books so I don’t have to erase things pixel by pixel…
I’m not having much luck with the zipped files. I’m not real clever with graphics, or zips…but I’ll see if I can find out where it landed on my disk.
But thanks!
I’ll see if I can get these up.
Ah sorry, I forgot ZIPs aren’t the friendliest of things!
I’ve uploaded the individual Angel/Merovingen JPGs to a folder – this link should take you to the list, where you can view/download each one: http://www.mediafire.com/?gpv885h80c6jv
Hope that makes things a bit easier 🙂
