It’s usually nippy by this time of year, but it’s holding on warm. We’re getting down to 33 Tuesday night next, but then it’ll warm up to 44 at night. So it’s coming, but none of the trees have turned.
I’m spending my evenings working on Chernevog’s rework, as I spend my days with Bren—oh, is Cajeiri up to his ears in hot water….and I’m beginning to feel I need some relaxation.
The Wave outpost over on Facebook is doing well, with nearly 500 persons ‘liking’ it. That’s good.
We had a friendly hail from Michael Bishop, who is having his own issues. And that’s the news I know. The weight loss is slowed, which is a good thing—too fast is not good. But it is continuing, which is weird, eating until we actually don’t WANT any more and then still losing. My mandolin should arrive tomorrow. With the protective glove. I took the Cuisinart (unopened) back to Lowe’s today. Silly people, not to give every machine a range of blades and accessories. And outside of that, we are watching Saiyuki in the evenings and we just keep swimming….just keep swimming….
As long as your head is above water ….
Beautiful fall day on the East Coast – until I noticed I wasn’t getting any hot water. Went into the basement to check the water heater (it’s in an unfinished 5×10 area in the basement) and found lots of water on the floor. Turned off water and gas and it was still leaking – the leak seems to be coming from the middle of the thing. My neighbor loaned me a wet/dry shop vac and with a fan on it all afternoon, the concrete floor seems dry – I think I caught it within a couple of hours of the leak. But now the hard part – selecting a new water heater.
Does any one have any suggestions/experience with the various kinds? Gas/40 gallons. I was disappointed to find that Consumer Reports didn’t rate water heaters. They were pushing a GE hybrid but at $1500 before installation and the fact it’s not gas, made me decide it wasn’t for me. A friend recommended a tankless water heater but they seem a bit spendy.
And the basement clean up meant no bulbs were planted today 🙁
we had a nice warm day, a mild Santa Ana condition. And one of the local power transformers blew up – I’m not sure where it was, but it was certainly audible. And the surge apparently fried the video controls on my main computer. (Fortunately it isn’t my *only* machine.)
No, it didn’t. Actually. Just made it really unhappy for a while. Much to my relief; I didn’t want to replace the computer.
Oh, frabjous joy! I love it when it turns out to be temporary!
Beryl, both Lowe’s and Home Depot websites offer a selection guide to water heaters of all flavors (with prices!). Energy-efficient ones are so marked. In some areas you can get incentives from your power company, particularly if you are replacing an older unit, and might even qualify for a Federal tax credit (also true for a/c units and furnaces). Now, of the one you choose is just in stock… :-/
NB: if your failed unit was older, you may also need to make some other additions to come up to code, such as header tank (which is a Good Idea anyway). Ask me how I know…

The reasoning: it’s Energy Star, which helps the gas bill, there’s often a rebate for Energy Star products, it’s big enough, but not oversized, and they’ll do a next-day install. I’d go to Lowe’s or Home Depot, talk to the salesman, ask about rebates, if there are any; make your selection, and set up an appointment for delivery and installation.
Carolyn, what is the brand/model of the mandolin you ordered?

This one.
With glove.
Thanks!
We had a warm Sunday, followed by an evening of cloudiness and sprinkles in the KC area. Today lot of gentle rain, which reminds me of grade school in the fall.
I had the classic yellow rain coat and boots with the metal buckles. We always walked to school and very rarely got a ride, even in the worst weather. On those days, for recess and the lunch hour we either went to the tiny school library or they showed films – Jacques Cousteau, flowers opening or seeds sprouting in fast-motion, weather (I recall one about the hurricane “Maria”), occasionally cartoons, or played a group game. Those were happy days.
Greetings and Salutations everyone. Long time fan of Ms. Cherryh ( please keep writing! you are one of the few authors who actually write grown up science fiction and fantasy) and have finally worked out how to actually leave a post. Tricky it was.
Well, anyway hopefully I’m doing this right.
Kind regards
And you got on with a gravatar! Bravo! And welcome!
