California is several states combined---and my personal favorite is wherever the air is
cool, like the beach, like the deep redwoods.
Yep, that's 'Tivo, our faithful red critter, stuck in a tree. The thing that's so amazing is how these giant trees can been hacked into, used for tunnels or houses, and just keep growing. My personal preference is nobody hacking into these beautiful and ancient trees, but they're so incredibly resilient. I remember this one from my childhood, when a family car now an antique did exactly the same thing---and I'm pretty sure that generations to come will see it pretty much the same. We change a lot. This old giant can take in a lot of cars and still keep growing.
We went on up the coast, hopping from view to view of the Pacific, and winding in and out of the woods. It's a wonderful drive, if you allow yourself plenty of time. There's always somewhere to eat, always somewhere to sleep, not the big chains, but just little places, just as you drive along. Don't plan, just find a likely spot and shop or stay.
