(Or, at least, that what they report will be repeated uncritically until it’s picked up by mainstream press as real news. And that, I’ve lately noticed, happens pretty often, not just on the kalends of April. 🙁 )
I am doing Poisson d’avril with my French language students. Their assignment is to put a paper fish on the administrators’ backs unknown to them. Or any teacher. I am getting very paranoid today with everyone of my students trying to get them on my back!
Peacemaker has arrived in ebook and hardbound copy! Oh, wondrous apparition, provided by magicians. Or rather, by owl post, one supposes. Though how they got that big rectangular object in a message cylinder….
Haha, I wonder if nand’ Spence’s students have been specific enough for particular kinds of fish, or the more general cartoon fish shape. I get the feeling there ought to be some fish very suited to the day.
Hmm, what seafood is in the freezer? Perhaps fish tonight….
Just got beck from the ‘local’ Big Name Chain bookstore, whose online site claimed Peacemaker was in stock, and not only could I not find it in the store, the SF/F section was about half the size it should have been and looked like the buyer gets their data from walking past the books at the supermarket. If you want games and tchotchkes, though, they have an excellent selection.
I do have also about 20 copies which just arrived; and some paperbounds of the last book; haven’t got the time [taxes!] to post the links on CC, but it will get there!
The U.S. Postal Service, in an attempt to reduce operating costs of shipping items to Canada has initiated a “mail buoy” system to float mail across the Great Lakes to Canada. These “mail buoys” will significantly reduce the amount of fuel used for vehicles, as well as maintenance costs on those vehicles.
The Canadian Post Office could not be reached for comment, as they have not yet received today’s mail buoy carrying the news.
Hey, that system has been in place for many MANY years in the North Pacific and Bering sea, I’m shocked they’re just now introducing it to the great lakes!
I suppose part of the problem is the trained buoy-watchers are all working for the Alaskan fishing fleet!
Actually, the article I read said that the Canadians were dubious about the viability of the system, since the buoys would flash with a purple light, and the Canadians weren’t sure if the lights would be flash in French……
THe inscription seems to be a dedication of the building, involving some names—and of course a great big icon right over the word that may be ‘not a name’, as in a pretty important noun. Hard to skip back and forth, but it starts out “Upon this love of God…or someone named Godlove—you’d be a little dependent on knowing which; goes on about something like the ‘mystery’ —maybe—if it isn’t part of another founder’s name, and ends up with yet another expression that is either the name Anastasius…or the Resurrection. Churchly Greek often becomes confusing on issues like that. I think it’s something like …in the resurrection, if I had to make a guess.
The two mosaic inscriptions shown have different but similar lettering styles. One has a single instance of a Y-shaped Upsilon, but there’s also a form which resembles a loop of yarn or a yoke-and-halter. That looks like another form of Upsilon to me, so that I take the singular Y shape as an exception rather than another letter.
Both inscriptions have what I initially thought might be a holdover F (digamma, vau) with the bar at the bottom, until I looked at it positionally and decided it seems like a squared off C for sigma. It threw me because I’ve never seen that shown in exemplars before.
Am I reading those right? — Interestingly exuberant forms there, some very classical, others very uncial.
(I like calligraphy and epigraphy, the history of the alphabet. Neat, neat stuff.)
Typos entered on Jane’s site. Tomorrow I’ll start on the Who’s Who. Now to eat and sleep, perchance to dream (or have nightmares about Bren and Banichi in the Guild Headquarters.)
@BCS Read the History of the Aishidi’tat at the end of the book before reading the book. The Kindle version Table of Contents is faulty and does not mention the History but it can be found at Location 4798 (about 91% of the way through) This will catch you up sufficiently so that you can read Peacemaker out of sequence. Everything you need is in the History or is recapped at the appropriate points in the story itself.
I was so busy working today (actually until 9 p.m.) that I forgot that the ebook was waiting for me to download it. Download has been accomplished and transferred to my Nook. I’m going to go read now.
I regret to say this is actual-factual… Chile just had another one of those hosemonster earthquakes. We are waiting to find out if we will have a tsunami, and if so, the extent. o_O If one must have a tsunami, one would prefer it to be in the 1′ and under range. Chile, not so lucky.
To quote one of our local weather personalities, “We dodged that bowling ball.” There were some locally big sloshes on the Chilean coast, and of course the earthquake, but baji-naji, no big tsunami was generated. The staff at work was all slightly hoping for Civil Defense to say take a day off.
Molokai did, at one point. Did you ever wonder why Molokai only looks like half an island? The other half, the side with Kalaupapa (where the caldera mostly was) fell off in a titanic landslide. Several of the islands show evidence of having big landslides that carried away chunks; they made whopping tsunamis as well.
I got it from Kobo, in Europe; might work for Australia? Though I fear that Oz is often on the UK release schedule, not ‘rest of the world’.
I loved the first quick read-through, but won’t say anymore yet.
I’ve got one question regarding the historical summary at the back: IIRC Bren was sent to Ilisidi for the first time, in Foreigner, when the Phoenix reappeared and upset the atevi. He was worried about meeting her, and in my memory he hadn’t met her before; but I had the impression he’d already been paidhi for some years, enough to get into a routine in his job and life, become friends with Tabini, have been back at fairly long but regular intervals to Mospheira, etc.. In Geigi’s history (I like that extra viewpoint!) I get the impression he was sent there at the beginning of his tenure, and the return of the Phoenix is mentioned somewhat later. Maybe this difference in the impressions of the timing is due to the different viewpoints, or maybe it’s because at that time Geigi wasn’t closely concerned with the paidhi (even though they knew each other from the transport committee, IIRC) and has thus confused stuff a bit in his memory, though Bren doesn’t correct him on it. So the question is: How long had Bren been paidhi, and Tabini been in power, before the start of these events in Foreigner?
I had the impression that Foreigner is two or three years after Bren becomes paidhi. Long enough for him to not shock the Bujavid staff, to learn his way around the place and blend in a bit, to take at least one trip to Taiben. I had the impression that Ilisidi-aiji was in the East during that time, so he’d never met her, except by reputation.
There are only 6 Cherryh ebooks available in Oz via any distribution (excluding those on Closed Circle) as far as I can tell. None of them in the Foreigner universe. 🙁
At the Edge of Space
Forge of Heaven
Fortress in the Eye of Time
Fortress of Dragons
Fortress of Ice
Hammerfall.
It’s extremely annoying. If anyone has tips on figuring out who is responsible, I can send a letter (not that one letter is likely to have much effect, but who knows. 🙂 )
Hmm, that reminds me – I need to post these on Keith Anderson’s blog site.
Oh, and Fortress of Eagles, and Alternate Realities on Kindle. And I just found out they have nearly everything in Audible, but I’m just not interested in those at this stage of my life.
I heard that just for today, the Onion, the Daily Currant, and Duffel Blog will be reporting real news.
😉
(Or, at least, that what they report will be repeated uncritically until it’s picked up by mainstream press as real news. And that, I’ve lately noticed, happens pretty often, not just on the kalends of April. 🙁 )
Pleased to report that I totally devoured your latest, Peacemaker, and loved it.
My hardcover of Peacemaker arrived in my mailbox today! I’m hoping for some calm time today to sit in the sunshine outside and read it.
(I got the ecopy this morning, woot!)
I am doing Poisson d’avril with my French language students. Their assignment is to put a paper fish on the administrators’ backs unknown to them. Or any teacher. I am getting very paranoid today with everyone of my students trying to get them on my back!
Good harmless fun.

A cartoon shape with tape. Some of the more industrious have made them look like Nemo or Dora.
Something was downloaded today – yea. On to the birthday party.

Happy dance! I have to jan ken po with one of my friends about who gets first dibs on the Atevi novels.
The Morgaine series of 4 books, and Peacemaker, are now available at Audible.com .
In actual news, they found the remains of a Byzantine-period monastery in the Negev, with an impressive mosaic floor.

Would it work better if it flashed red-gold maple or silver-green maple? 😉

Should one look out for a Lady holding a shining broadsword out of the Lake? Perhaps a returning monarch or wizard? Hobbits? Elves?
Are shallots an appropriate lapel garnish for such an occasion?

Devoured Peacemaker without salt. Congratulations on achieving another brilliant triumph. This is my favorite since Invader…

Never forget the big question: Why does Molokai have no large volcano cone/crater?
Molokai did, at one point. Did you ever wonder why Molokai only looks like half an island? The other half, the side with Kalaupapa (where the caldera mostly was) fell off in a titanic landslide. ebooks not available in Oz. 🙁 Will have to see if any bookshops now exist in the city and whether they are up to 2014 yet. 😛
