And if in an evacuation zone, do. Please. It’s not the wind. It’s the water. You can’t argue with a flood. Collect the cats and get to high ground.
All of you in the path of Irene—take care.

I left Va Beach Friday afternoon. At that time, the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel was backed up about 5 miles, really only back to the 564 split over to the base. The Monitor Merrimac BT had absolutely no traffic. We scooted down 264 to Brambleton, through the Midtown tunnel, and then over the new Portsmouth expressway to the MMBT.
Saturday was a different beast – both major tunnels plus the downtown and midtown tunnels ended up closing, so the only real ways out were 58 and 460. I’m glad your ex missed the tornado.
Of course this past weekend was the end of the East Coast Surf Championship (and the reason that my younger son and I even ventured into the area the day before the hurricane arrived), so they were loving life! There was no way the lifeguards were keeping those folks out of the water…
It’s been 7 years since I was in the Tidewater area. The new Portsmouth expressway is definitely something I’m not up to speed on. We lived just a few blocks from the Chesapeake Square Mall, off Portsmouth Blvd. I liked the area, but because the home life got really difficult, I was compelled to move. I’ve never been allowed back in the house.
AFAIK, she’s okay, though.
I don’t think I could handle the surf like that. Too much chance of a rip current, and I’ve already had my run-in with one of those. Don’t ever want to do that again.
I recall the Western Freeway, which is SR 164, looking at Portsmouth on Mapquest, it appears that’s the one you’re talking about.
