day 5: Jane’s still converting text, but is closing in on it…

The new book release (Alizant) is still set for the 1st. For those of you who’ve never tried e-books, remember you and your printer can turn one of our e-books into paper. Just print out the pdf. Or use the html and your own word processor to convert it into any size format you like. [...]

New app for java-using phones reads Closed Circle .prc and .mobi

This from a reader: “http://www.mobipocket.com/dev/beta/j2me.asp, an early release of software… will read .mobi / .prc files on a regular cell phone that supports java, in my case, a Sony Ericsson C510.”

Always glad to know—and pass on!

That’s link.

They do warn it’s an alpha release and could crash your device, so take precautions [...]

Abandoned universes…the publishing scene…

I’ve gotten several queries today about more books in this and that universe, and for Foreigner, the answer is good.

One thing that has been so, so difficult is the number of times I have had to create a universe for some reason, then find that the publisher has been gobbled up by some oil [...]

Jane is ex-haust-ed…

Up at 2 am and not calling me: seems she found out it was the Condor deadline for getting an ad in the program book, and she sat up half the night putting a new format together, since what we could afford was a half page, and our regular flier isn’t formatted for that size.

[...]

Here’s the quick refresher on e-files, downloads and what to do with them.

1. pick a device. Your computer will do. Download the offered file and store it. It’s about the size, as Sweetbo pointed out, of an MP3 download.

2. unzip it: just click on it. You will find 11 types of files (I think.) Now…

3. go to our left sidebar and download both Mobipocket Reader [...]

We have had about 130 people download the free file in the first 24 hours…scroll down if you’re looking for the download: it’s in the posts.

…bearing in mind that some people visit once a week….

If any of you are hesitating, go for it. It’s a little slow in this incarnation: a 4.5 meg file for the first download. In the actual site, we will have that down to 1.5 if you are after a MiniMe file (mobi, pdf, ePub [...]

Question re file size and download: Do I need to change it? Is anybody having trouble? Let me know!

Sifting the various input, download difficulties due to the size of the file are posing a formidable challenge to some users on some systems. As a ‘gateway’ problem, this turns people away before we can get them through the door to help them with any other problems, so it concerns me.

I’m going to have [...]

Check it out! It works! It works!

Awright! I refuse, absolutely refuse to admit what I forgot to do. Too many irons in the fire is my only excuse and even I’m not buying that. But the download should now work! If it doesn’t…wait ten minutes before telling me. I wanna go take a shower! —>J

THE BUTTON ISN”T WORKING YET: WE [...]

What ‘reader’ do you recommend and why? We’ve had a request for this question.

Mine: I like my laptop. I live with it. And it has color, as well as pretty clear screens. I can also read it in the dark: I understand the eInk screens require an external light source just like paper. As I get older, my eyes get worse for close work, and my need for [...]

Prepping e-books

The actual launch of Closed Circle is getting close enough I’m going to spend time this evening actually assembling several e-books, notably Faery in Shadow and The Writing Life: A Writer’s Journal vol 1-3. Those will be the first out. Rusalka is ready, but Jane is not ready to do the cover yet. She’s prepping [...]
