OK—my friends who haven’t yet registered, do— because…

…I am so tired every morning of booting off a raft of spammers who come in with tags like you.buy.great.shoes and such, and it would so boost my spirits to have some more legitimate people amid the morning ‘new registrants’ e-mails. I promise you, we hate spam, we don’t spam, we don’t sell your addy to anybody, and we’re pretty nice folk. You can also add us to your feed, if you like.

    What method do you use to catch spam?

    The Akismet plugin comes standard with WordPress and is very effective. It’s free for non-commercial websites.

    There are also many other WordPress plugins for dealing with spam.

    My parents married on April first, I was born on November twenty-sixth. There are questions of legitimacy, but not of reality. Feed? How do I do that?

      We’ll say your parents were…enthusiastic in their embrace of their newfound love. :D This happens with some frequency and can be a good sign. Or anyway, it gets things going in a hurry! We just hope such premarital bliss bodes well for a long, happy relationship.

      My own parents went the much slower route, long courtship and engagement. Apparently, once married, they were then somewhat enthusiastic, though luck or divine providence, and biology were not quite with them, as it took some years to produce, well, me. There were other attempts, to be sure. ;) And I’m lucky enough that mom and dad did have a long, happy marriage, for the most part.

      Reality, you say? Whose? Yours, mine, hers, his? My cats’ reality? Wow, now there might be a different one. I suspect there’d be a high frequency of things to chase, eat, and sleep, among other attractions. LOL.

        @BCS and Tommie: Or even both – my parents were engaged for 4 years as students, then after they married it took only 7 months for me to be born (and my mom’s always told me I was three weeks late – apparently a very strongly innate bad habit of mine, as I’m still late for almost everything!).
        I think there’s even a saying (or a proverb?) about this, that I’ve seen or heard but I can’t remember where: “An eager young bride can accomplish in 7 months what takes 9 for cow or countess” – clever mom! ;)

        The ‘Posts’ button at the (almost) top right wil ‘subscribe’ you to CJ’s posts; the ‘Comments’ button updates your RSS feed whenever one of us here posts a comment.

          I think there’s even a saying (or a proverb?) about this, that I’ve seen or heard but I can’t remember where: “An eager young bride can accomplish in 7 months what takes 9 for cow or countess” – clever mom! ;)

          I remember seeing that in a Heinlein book. He may have been quoting an older saying your mom also knew.

    Spam! Spam! Spam! I made the mistake of doing a survey…..never again! My Spam Blocker is getting a inordinate amount of use these days!

    I was quite happy to see the second asteroid mining operation start-up. The only way to get into space is to go there. The generation who made the moon landings didn’t expect the silly
    to take a generation off from the adventure.

    There’s an RSS button somewhere—I think up at the top. That will let you know when there are new posts.

    GreenWyvern, I’ve got Akismet, I’ve got SiCapcha, and there’s a new flood getting through the screens. It’s always a dilemma—I could tighten signup, but I also don’t want to make it inconvenient for the people I want to sign up…I’ve seen some Capcha arrangements that I find challenging to get through, and I’d rather hand-toss the spammers than have people subjected to the ones that make the challenge more a test of imagination…
    Sigh. But thanks! I’ll read the page. I’m hoping SiCapcha will update and plug the leak or something else will come along.

    Meanwhile—WELCOME! to all you folk coming in! We don’t have many rules except no spoilers except where the thread says spoilers, wait until a book has been out a month before giving away too much; no flames, nothing that tends to lead there—this is our living room, eh, and please respect the furniture. Otherwise, we discuss all sorts of things and sometimes even make sense, but it’s never been a stringent requirement.

    We have associated sites: there’s http://www.closed-circle.net where, I, Lynn Abbey, and Jane Fancher sell e-books, tee shirts and spare physical copies; most are re-prints but we have originals, too, which can’t be had elsewhere. All profits go straight to the writers: Closed Circle is just a site name. And over on the left sidebar, find links to that, and to Jane’s blog and Lynn’s blog. Bookmark them all and join in. We are a nice, sometimes rowdy bunch and you’re very welcome. I post nearly daily; Jane posts every few days at least; Lynn’s rarer, but she’s funnier’n spit when she’s not being serious. Please feel welcome at at of these sites…and if you can’t find something, ask somewhere appended to the day’s active post and people will help you often faster than I can get to it.

    THere’s two little toggles up top right that say posts and comments, and I think if you click on them they should sign you up to hear from us when something’s new. I think.

    I think I’m real. Unfortunately, so does the IRS. . .

    If you follow multiple blogs, a feed reader is very helpful. There are a bunch of free ones out there. Each time you open the feed reader program, it polls the blogs you follow and informs you when one of them has a new post. It’s a whole lot better and less labor intensive than using book marks. The feed reader I use is NewsFox. It’s pretty user friendly, I like its display format and with it I follow not only blogs, but webcomics and “newspaper” comics from services like GoComics — I open one program and its all there. It will follow anything that has an RSS feed.

    The article about using Gravatar finally got me to sign up. I’m a real person, despite the nature of my picture.

    I’ve been reading your work since I bought a bunch of used DAW paperbacks in college. I majored in Latin, though that was a long time ago. And yes, I have many newer books of yours in addition to those ancient copies. I’m looking forward to your conversion to digital because those older copies could use replacing.
