I am having issues with Firefox too. Guess it’s going to be one of THOSE days!
I just uninstalled it, via add-remove-Programs [windows] and reinstalled from the web and that fixed it.
Be very careful before you uninstall that you have another web browser, eg IE explorer, so you can get to the web—
And type in mozilla.org as the site. SOmebody in Germany has a phishing operation offering a mozilla firefox download with a complicated mask involving converting a .de site (Germany) to display as mozilla.COM and offering stuff my Norton installation rang fire alarms on all over the place.
Once you download from mozilla.org, the proper site, it will offer to RUN, and it will remember all your settings even including your ‘skins’ and LastPass…both of which I recommend, the one because it’s pretty: the ‘skin’ apps are over to the right when you go up into GET ADDONS.
LastPass is a secure repository for all your passwords. It will not only autofill everything from passwords to credit card info, if you click on one, it will take you to the appropriate site, fill in the stuff, and open the site for you. An end of all those headaches of passwords and user names. Best of all, Firefox retains that info even during a reinstall, and it just comes up as if nothing unusual had happened.
Using my idiosyncratic, home-made system I went to cherryh.com. I got this on top, “Welcome, Voyager! You are the th sapient being to visit this outpost since its founding.” So the counter is malfunctioning. But from there I could get to Jane’s home page, and the Closed Circle Bazaar. That was the limit of my “search”. Anything in particular?
p.s. When I have to download/install something like Firefox, I always prefer the two-step process, download a file I can use again, then install from that.
What causes most browser problems is orrupted cache files or cookies. When cleaning all that out doesn’t fix everything, deleting all browser history can sometimes work a miracle.
As for having your browser remember your passwords — well, that can be a temporary blessing or a long-time curse. Whether or not you use the “remember” function, passwords should be kept in a separate securely encrypted file that can be backed up regularly.
I once had to retrieve a friend’s entire password collection from Firefox when he switched laptops. It was easy. Too easy. Scary easy. And he was locked out until I had them, because he left it all to the browser.
Password keeping programs are awkward for me, partly because of my poor vision. Instead, I use a small note-taking app called MemPad which is capable of encryption. It doesn’t enter anything automatically, but it keeps my data safe and readily accessible. Whatever your choice for keeping passwords, make sure that you can always back up the essential file.
Thanks!
I still had SOME troubles with Firefox, not even being able to type in the ‘search’ box. I got into Firefox Options, and played with the check marks under ‘Tabs’ —this FINALLY has it behaving properly again. IMHO, their last update was not ready for prime time.
Jury’s still out for me where the problem lies. I’ve had no problems. I wonder if there isn’t stuff that gets retained on the computer somewhere, even when you uninstall. Most programs leave preferences detritus all over your computer “just in case you want to come back”. Frustrates heck out of me. I always uninstall in order to get, thanks very much, a completely fresh start on the problem! Grrrrr….
That’s why I use portable applications whenever possible. Then everything is stored in one directory, and nothing anywhere else.
A good free uninstaller is IObit. It will check for anything left over after you have uninstalled, give you a list of what it’s found, and ask you whether you want to delete it.
Here’s a link to a portable version of IObit

I deleted a spare Firefox folder I found and have no ill effects.
The blog site seemed to be down Saturday morning for me (about 0800 UTC).
Everything is fine here. I have you in my blog list favorites and bookmark bar. Both are fine and allow me to move to other sites with no problems. I’m an Apple, if that helps.
ok as far as I can tell (Mac/Safari)
Hopefully I’ve got everything fixed except the counter. We were at 187153 when it blew up.
No troubles here with your blog.
But I’m rerunning Norton after getting hit yesterday or today by a Trojan. Had the scanner run last night, crashed the computer. Now I’m running it again. Think I got the Trojan deleted, restarted, now waiting. Norton had claimed the thing was blocked anyway. We shall see.
Meanwhile, I’m on my iPad, may do a little via laptop or (gasp) hand, via sketch pad or spiral notebook.
You know, if a party of Greeks did want to visit, they *could* just ask. It’d save on all the splinters and such. Heck, they could bring a horse or two to mow the yard. If they really wanted, they could even bring coconuts and Patsy. Hmpf. Trojans, speaking about, interrupting a perfectly good weekend instead of simply saying hi, we want to come over. They’d have to bring their own wine, but otherwise fine.
…kidding aside, I did not like the waste of time or how spectacularly my PC died. Had to cold boot it. I am resolved to look at Macs again, tired of the aggravation all the time with Windows. But it will be a couple of months before I can even think about a Mac, so there is time for research.
Best wishes troubleshooting your computer and site. At least your computer hasn’t got a thing for pod bay doors or bad strategy games….
Don’t you remember, Patsy ate an arrow!
I am running Firefox and have your blog in NewsFox feed reader. I have had no difficulties going straight to this blog post, or in reading it. Love NewsFox as I follow Tumblr blogs, Webcomics, GoComics, etc. as well as other “regular” Blogger, WordPress, and Live Journal blogs. NewsFox keeps everything all neat and nicely organized and tells me when somebody’s put up a new post. Have it set to poll everything each time I access the program. Minimize it and it will give you a popup to tell you what’s new.
I’ve not seen anything irregular in Wave without a Shore today or yesterday. I’m using Safari on a Mac.
No problems here with FireFox 14 and Win Vista. Also, Google Reader gets the primary blog updates.
