Son of the Convention Crud…

Glug. No nicer than the RadCon Convention Crud. The best prescription tends to be Benedryl plus Sudafed and Advil. I’ve tried everything else, but this at least lets me breathe. I’m grumpy when I can’t breathe. I can tolerate a headache, but breathing is my basic requirement.

Jane’s bravely gone off to the store, doing just a shade better than I am, but I’m worried that she’s coming down with it. We had to bow out of a filksing this Saturday.

On a positive note, we’re going to turn on the pond pump this week, Friday or Saturday: we’re inviting OSG over for the event. We’ll install the pump and the filters and start the process.

I really, really feel so sorry about your crud! I have a serious reaction to a plugged nasal passage. I go berserk! The descriptions of claustrophobia fit nicely,so I keep Sudaphed or the Equate equivalent close in winter. If you did not know the rules of “Fall” both foot and knee would be spoken of in funeral tones and I for one am so glad that you both are safe, if lagging in the well department!
Hooray for the “spring arrives at Pond” ceremonies about to commence!

We are so looking forward to the opening of our favorite pond shop. We want to get water hyacinth and a koi http://www.nishikigoi-info.com/koi-classification.html (hi utsuri) baby of the red and black coloring, and a shiro bekko baby to replace little Rukia. If you get tiny babies, since their colors are ‘unproven’ and may turn out to have undesirable traits, you can get them inexpensively, and hey, we aren’t into showing: just our own choices, which are messy as unmade beds, but a delight in their variety. Gold Ari and platinum Maddy are our ogons, actually true to type. But Kenpachi defies classification, looking rather like a patchwork quilt with a bald spot. ;)

We want to get some water hyacinth. And now Jane’s talking about digging up the front yard for a rock garden with evergreen.

I believe that I remember that you said that after
the pre-winter frost sets in that the water hyacinth turns yucky. How would it do as compost?
Most water plants make ultra good soils, bringing
minerals and “sun” energy to the mix.
I will enjoy your babies as a voyeur,I always wanted a koi pond and so enjoy your pond talk!

is one of my favorite fishcams. None of the koi cams are active this early in the year that I know of, but this one never stops…even when it is night and pitch black! So don’t think it’s broken if you happen on it dark! Wait for dawn in the Bahamas. You can select your ‘refresh rate’ during daylight. I use 2 seconds.
And if you’ve ever wanted to sit by a waterhole in the dark and wait for lions…here’s one:
    http://www.africam.com/wildlife/index.php
Nkorho Pan is right outside a tourist lodge, but they get quite a lot of wildlife traffic—occasionally wildlife from the lodge, too, but they don’t let the tourists wander out to meet the lions in the dark. And I’ve only seen lights from the lodge once.
It’s a “streaming” cam, so you don’t have to set a refresh rate. You can sit and listen to the crickets. You’ll also find that the animals have their schedule, too: you can sort of expect them at certain times.

    I specialize in exquisite tymesynques.

Carolyn — ever think about putting a webcam on the Glorious Tank or the pond? (This suggestion is semi-serious.)

I can’t recall if anyone has ever suggested a Neti Pot for clearing up sinus crud. It sounds more disgusting than it is, in truth: slowing pouring a warm saline solution into one nostril and letting it drain out the other. I’ve had allergies for years and was amazed at how opened up the back of my sinuses felt. Friends battling with sinus infections find they clear up faster too.

Love africam! I think you suggested it a couple years ago. One Christmas Eve a pair of lions were nakking on a wildebeest and you could hear carolers singing in the lodge. Such fun!

  • Azureblu

Oh,thank you so much! I had no idea these were
    available.
    82Eridani,
When I was 16 and had really bad sinus infections an Ear,Nose & Throat Dr. ran a red fluid in one nostril and out the other. I got worse,so back again I went for same treatment. I got very bad and the Dr. finally explained that I was allergic to the red fluid and now had scars. I have used saline to stop colds, but it doesn’t open my sinuses. It probably would have before the treatment,so thank you for your caring.

There is an article in the BBC World News about
a new format for hard drives that will cause many
    problems with XP users. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8557144.stm
sigh I really liked my XP!

I had to really work myself up to trying the Neti Pot, and now I’ve tried to convert everyone in my family. So far, I’ve managed to get my sister and best friend to try it, and they’ve seen good results too. If anyone here is prone to floating-particle migraines (dust, smoke, perfume), you might want to give it a try. I’ve actually gotten rid of incipient migraines with it, used in combination with hot compresses and ice packs. (In fact, between the Neti, the compresses, the ice and caffeine, I’ve stopped using medication altogether — not that the medication worked that well to begin with.) Just make sure the water temp is baby-bath temp, and personally, I find 1/4 tsp of salt is plenty sufficient, while 1 tsp (recommended in some instructions) really hurts. Oh, the first time you try it — REMEMBER TO BREATH THROUGH YOUR MOUTH. :-)

I use Ayr Saline rinse, which is best done in the shower—it’s pretty spilly—and good. It’s got a 7 percent saline solution in packets, and it’s pure, premeasured salt in those packets, so it’s me-proof. ;) I once scalded my nose with too much saline. Ow!

Any time you get exposed to something really nasty to your allergies, best get a shower, shampoo, use the Netipot or Ayr, change every stitch of clothing, and wipe down your shoes. Especially don’t fall down on the bed to rest until you’ve done that. Pollen travels!

      Let’s hear it for rinses!

The British in a very workman like effort, leased a resort for 10 yrs. and offered free vacations with the single proviso that the Doctors be allowed to infect them with the cold virus. This was a single minded effort to find a cure. Afterwards a simple but effective remedy had been found. They discovered that the cold virus entered the body by the nose and stayed there pumping out it’s well known symptoms. A very saline spray would cause mucus discharge and if continued for say a few hours would wash the virus out and end the cold. It works,I hate it,but it does work!
